Strength:

Easy to use, gobs of power, very smoth sound, not harsh or annoying. It is a real brute when a demanding sound track hits it.....

Weakness:

None that I am aware of

I finally replaced may aging Hafler/Denon system with this receiver. I have a pair of Infynity RS-5 (front), JBL l20T's for the rear (still a very big fan of this bookshelf...what a wonderful little speaker), and an Infinity Center chanel speaker. I also have the little 75 watt. 8" Infinity sub. I use a Denon DVD 1500 using Coax into the Nak.

I have had problems with "buzzing", or other un-wanted noise comming from the speakers. In all instances, the problem was identified as line noise that is introduced from the 75 ohm coax cable (AT&T digital cable). Any device, such as my VCR, or the digital cable box that is attached to the system via interconnects, video or sound, introduces a really loud "hum". If I disconnect the main 75 ohm cable lead, the system is dead silent until you press "play" on the preferred playback device. I have tried several grounding configurations with no luck.

Some of the other users who have complained about cross-talk comming from other attached devices may have hooked an out-bound RCA jack into the "out-bound" RCA on the receiver. I also had this issue when attempting to connect devices when I could not clearly see the rear of the receiver. After we removed my head from my butt, I have routed all power cords away from the RCA leads, Checked my RCA connections, and the unit performs far beyond my expectations. I am shocked when reading other reviews on some of my peices, including this reciever. I did not spend huge sums of money on the best of the best. I went moderate in all catigorys. I did not expect to have the quality of sound that I enjoy daily.

For those demanding folks who love to move their home from the foundation, the DVD movie,"Matrix", really shocked me. The RS-5 speakers were stunning in their clarity, deep bass content, and over-all, detailed content with this receiver. It was two days later that I had found that my sub-woofer was un-plugged. That is how solid the combined utits perform together. Whoa baby, was this was a great buy at $1024.00. My satisfaction with this Nak rates up with my Hafler XL-280 and my Nak Z-80 tape deck. It is the best money that I have every spent on a single audio piece. It is very easy to setup, and to use.....it sounds absolutly beautiful.

'Old' System:
Adcom GFA-555
Adcom GFT-555
Adcom GFP-555
NAD Reference CD Player
Audio Alchemy Digital Decoding Engine
JM Labs Electra 905
Atlantis Reference 24XL Stands
Velodyne HGS-12 Subwoofer

I list the old system first to set the reference point. I am asking a lot of a 'receiver' to replace my trusted Adcom 555 components. The Adcom stuff always had power to spare, was articulate and cleanly detailed and presents a good sound stage.

The Nakamichi AV-10 is by no means the equal of the Adcom components..nor does it try to be, nor is it priced like it would be.

The Nakamich IS an outstanding Home Theater receiver...it is very very easy to use (didn't even look at the manual until I tried to figure out how to get the sub-woofer to work, real easy once you know what button to push)

The remote control is pretty decent (although backlighting would make it even better)

This thing has a ton of power. I believe it is rated at 120 WPC to the front when you are in stereo mode (granted the power rating falls short of the 200+ that the adcom puts out, but the JM Labs are very efficient and the sub has its own very large amp built in)

The Nak does not throw the soundstage as wide or as deep as the Adcom, but it does present one.

I am very impressed by this unit as a Home Theater receiver and as a very good sounding receiver for 2 channel audio as well.

If you are considering purchasing a receiver, forget about Sony and many other brands and check out the Nak...chances are you will take it home...it is 35 pounds of power-punch and ease of use. enjoy it !

Strength:

Excellent sound if used as a pre-amp.

Weakness:

Hum on speaker terminals if used in surround mose ; fan noise

I normally would give this unit 4 stars out of 5 (loss of 1 star for fan noise and hum on speaker terminals) were it not for the dismal support or rather lack of it from the Nak people themselves. I emailed them to comment about the problem of the hum/buzz you can hear from the speaker terminals when the unit is played between 11 and 12 o'clock (more and the hum is just awful!). Response? None! I sent the email to US and Japanese HQ and did not get a response from either. For a company such as Nakamichi, this is simply not good enough! Shame!

Strength:

Well constructed, quality unit that produces quality sound as well.

Weakness:

No outputs for future audio formats (like DVD audio); difficult speaker plugs. No component inputs.

This is a follow-up review after owning this receiver for nearly two years. The Nak has done everything I expected and more. I was looking for a receiver with strong 2-channel performance with home theater a secondary consideration. The Nak, with 120 watts per channel in stereo, was exactly what I wanted. It is powering my home theater, but I also use it quite extensively for music. The Nak doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles, but that's okay with me. DSPs are limited to hall and natural. But for DD and DTS, this receiver is fantastic. It's running my fronts, B&W CDM 1SEs, B&W CDM CSE center channel and B&W 601S2s as the rears. My sub is the Sunfire True Sub Jr. The center channel, powered by a separate amp within the Nak, is crystal clear. Dialogue sounds natural and doesn't get lost in music scores or sound effects. I don't use the Nak remote because I have the Marantz RC2000 MkII programable remote, so I can't really comment on its quality. Switching between various components is very easy with the Nak. This unit may not have enough bells and whistles on it for many folks. That's OK. I'm sure it will soon be discontinued for a newer model soon. If you're looking for a quality 2-channel receiver, with the benefit of DD and DTS video, this is definitely a unit you should look at. For you lunkheads who complain about fan noise: what the hell are you doing, sticking your heads behind the Nak? There is no "distracting'' fan noise, you idiots. And for the clown below who complained about the quality of his Nak, you did buy it as a demo, didn't you. As is? I would definitely buy this unit again, even at its list of $1,199.

fan and hum

Last year I got a AV-10 with me home, from Malaysia. It is assembled in Malaysia. Maybe not the best place in the world! It cost me 600$, an it`s worth it. Performs well and sounds nice. I have used it every day (for CD or DVD) for over a year now, and it is still going strong. Yes, I can hear the fan, but only when it is a quiet part. There is a hum at half rate when nothing is connected. My loudspeakers are 4 and 6 ohms, and that is no problem. All in all it is very good receiver. Some friends of mine has listened to my hometheater, they were impressed. They are into high-end stoff. In Sweden, the cost of the AV-10, is almost the same as the YAMAHA A-1.But I think the AV-10 is the best.

Anyone thinking of buying the AV-10 online, brand new or used, please think twice. I got the AV-10 through an online auction(Uxxx)the product was refurbish but garanteen in working condition, claim to have 1 year warranty from the manufacturer. When I got the product, it didn't power up at all, so I called Nakamichi, they told me no warranty for product purchases from Uxxx. I called Uxxx, they told either they can talk to Nakamichi or I can return it, and I decided to return it. Just the shipping cost me almost $100. From now on, I will go to the store to buy any electonic product, if anything is wrong with it, I can take it back to the store on my own.

Strength:

Easy set-up and great with both movies and music.

Weakness:

None so far.

I have been looking for an affordable receiver that does equally well on movies and music for sometime. After doing some searching on the net and hi-fi mags, I decided on NAK AV10. I have just set it up a couple of days ago and at the moment, I am the happiest man alive. I have yet to hear any hum or noise from the speaker terminals that some users complained about; I watched movies during the quiet hours of the night (after midnight) and I did not notice any hum or buzz. And fan noise? Well, I can only hear that when I am about a foot from the receiver; the fan noise does not intrude on my listening pleasure at normal (or less than normal)listening distance. I watched The Eagles DTS DVD just this afternoon; I have never heard anything so beautiful before (played it on my Nakamichi DVD10). Did I mention that this receiver is affordable? Well, it is...at least in Hong Kong. I know that it cost something like 900 to 1000 US$ in some countries...here in Hong Kong, it is only US$500, brand new with a year warranty...told you I am a real happy guy.

Strength:

The AV-10 reciever is the best sounding reciever for the money
Attention to detail in fit and finish and real high quality sound without a lot of gimmicks that are rarely used

Weakness:

The remote control has to be aimed DIRECTLY at the unit in order to function at all....my previous unit the AV-2s had a remote that when pointed at the moon would still signal the reciever

The one to do it all....highest sound quality....obscene power output (all the better)....easily deciphered instructions .all in all i would purchase another unit just from the sound quality .

Strength:

Power, price, ease of use, Sound. Quality. NO DSP mania

Weakness:

No onscreen dispaly.

For you people out there looking for the best receiver in it's class your look should be over. I have owned Yamahas, Kenwoods and Sherwoods but this Nakamichi AV10 separates the boys from the men. It has no cheap frills like multiple DSP's e.t.c , they all sound fake anyway. Although the mere 2 DSP's this unit has sound spectacular. (Natural and Hall amongst DTS and DD)
I think the reason this unit sounds so good is the shear honest (real) power it has, 100x5 120x2 In stereo. My last receiver the Kenwood Vr2080 and Yamaha RXV793 were good but would distort at some givem part of music or a movie, especially the Kenwood. Fit and Finish are beyond reproach. Plain and simply it just sounds and looks better, set up is a sure delight and could not be any easier. You really do owe it to yourselves to try this bad boy out.

At the price i paid it was a steal, I bought mine from my local audio video installation center Extrpc and A1 Electronics for $870. Call them at516-931-4552

Strength:

Easy to set-up. Good music sound. Cost.

Weakness:

Little to none.

I did extensive research to build a surround sound system within a budget of USD 3,500.00. At this cost, there are certain give-ups like a back-lit remote control. Overall, stop your searching, this is the unit for great overall music (jazz to punk rock) and excellent surround sound!
