I own this receiver for 2 years. A good perfomer for average user. Sound powerful in average size room. It will become harsh when it goes too loud. Sound good in music too. As for the tuner, it is one of the best I ever heard. A value for money as i bought it at $700 in Singapore dollars. However, this reveiver is giving me technical problem recently.

I've owned the NAD AV-716 for around 7 years now (as soon as NAD produced it). I wanted a receiver REALLY capable of 4ohms. What I got was a blessing. The analog Dolby Prologic doesn't suffer from typical the veiled processing common to analog devices. The sound is so-o-o sweet & articulate I use it with music occasionally (I'd do it more, but can't vanquish the rear channel delay). This puppy ruined me for DD models. The present AC-3 HT decoders (that I've heard) need much better DAC-processing (whether it be the digital-filters, error-correction, anti-jitter circuits, or the DACs themselves), at least in comparison. Although, I'm hoping the Marantz SR-18 will blow it away. I'd really like to vote 4.8 stars.

I had the chance to listen to this receiver on an extended basis in my home.I would not buy one because of the severe lack of bass frequencies that are not produced by the amplifier section of this receiver.
Before buying one a trial tryout is recommended, especially if you like some bass in your music. this is a british amp and ike a lot of british products they are light in the low end.
Build Quality is a-1.
Features and reliabity are also A-1.
Three stars.

I've had the NAD AV 716 for over a year now and I have been very happy with it.I have it connected to the Cambridge Sound Works Ensembles, Center Channel Plus and the Surround IIs. I bought it partially for the home theater and partially for listening to music. It is very good at both. It is especially good at playing live recordings with its "hall" effects on. The FM tuner is surprisingly good. It pulls in stations I can't get on any other receiver in my house. Watching movies is a real treat. Quite often, I forget that the surround mode is on, and I will be surprised by sounds behind me. The other
night, I flipped on the Grammies and Eric Clapton was playing. My first thought was, "where the heck is this being broadcast from?" because the hall sounded much larger than a theatre! Then people started clapping above me. I don't usually watch awards shows, but I ended up watching the whole show because the sound was just amazing. The mix was terrible on a number of the performers, but
I could hear the technicians bringing levels up and down. Even TV shows are fun. Those Star Trek shows have great surround effects. You can hear people
walking above you and off in the distance, you can hear a great hum from the engines.

This is the same product as the Onkyo TX-SV515PRO II. It has a killer Pro Logicanalog decoder which is very quiet. For listening to music, I use it as a pre-amp connected to a Bryston 2B-LP and I get super sound. I had it for 3 years wihtout a glitch. A must in that category
Happy listening

I seriously started to appreciate the NAD 716 when I started to audition new AV receivers to move up to AC-3 sound. None in the similar price range could match, not even the Yamahas. Been using the 716 for more than three years and watching movies have been excellent (I use KEF coda Nines and the 80C in the centre), loud but not harsh, crystal clear vocals and a strong musical quality about it, which makes listening to music excellent. It makes upgrading hard and I've decided to stay with this system for a few more years. Thanks to the 716, movies on Dolby surround are powerful and delightful. Pity about the lack of upgradability, but I urge new buyers to give the 716 a shot, especially if you're moving to home theater on a budget and still want to play your music.
I would give it a five star rating because of the hours of enjoyment it's given me and its tremendous price value. I highly recommend the NAD. You can't go wrong if your're picking up a pro-logic AV receiver for the first time.

I picked this up as a demo model for $300. It has performed flawlessly. In the usual NAD tradition, they didn't try to do too much with this unit. It has one surround mode for music (HALL), which works well for all types of music. And one surround mode for movies (PRO-LOGIC) which of course works equally well for movie sound.
This reciever has plenty of power for real-world listening. It can serve as the centerpiece of a good-sounding A/V system. Dolby Digital will make Pro-logic systems obsolete, but that doesn't take away the immense pleasure we are getting from the 716AV.

This is a great receiver. The sound quality is quite high, for both home theater and music... it has all sorts of great options and is very well designed. I have owned it for about two years now and am very very happy with it.
I have a few complaints however, which keep it from a five star rating. First it has no pre-outs, so there is no way to upgrade it to Dolby Digital. This sucks. I had to buy a T770... okay that part didn't suck because the T770 rules, but it would've been nice to have the option of buying a separate decoder, which would've costed a whole lot less.

Second, there are no S-Video inputs on the 716AV. A petty complaint? Yes, but it is a nuisance at times.

Third complaint, the speakers connections for the rear and center should be binding posts, instead they are those damn little holes with the push down thingies (a true audiophile description)... again a petty gripe but valid in my opinion.

Overall this receiver has performed exceptionally for me. The sound is excellent, there a lots of great features and options, the remote is great and can control several other NAD link capable devices, and in the NAD tradition it is a great value (I got mine through NetMarket for like $450 or something absurd). My petty complaints, and the lack of pre-outs deduct one star...

Strength:

Great in stereo. Excellent in Pro Logic. Lots of reserve power. Drives any speaker load.

Weakness:

You can't upgrade.

I agree with Mark that the 716AV certainly has bass, lots of it, and both very tight and controlled. If anyone finds it lacking, it can't be the amp! Owners of this NAD classic will understand how much they are missing when they move up to other Dolby Digital receivers. The 716AV offers good clean sound and a powerful dynamic range. The rating of 55W is really a misnomer because this receiver really packs it in. I'm using the 716 as a second HT set in my room, feeding it with my older LD collection. There should be plenty of second-hand 716s out there in the market. You can't go wrong picking it up. It's excellent value.
