Strength:

Very acurate sound, no HISS, great value for the price

Weakness:

back lit remote

I originally was planning to buy a sony db reciever, but after looking at the home theater review on this reciever, i knew this was the one for my home theater. I was still a little skeptical because i have never heard of a brand call marantz. I looked at this board and realized that there were several posts and it had a strong rating. If it wasn't for that, i might not have considered this reciever.

There was no other reciever that i could find that would match this baby for the number of features/power she offered for her price. This reciever ended up being on back order and it took me two months to get it. Setting it up was easy. I'm a rookie at HT and the OSD (on screen display) made it very easy to set up. For some reason i see nothing wrong with the remote or the manual that others that have posted reviews have complained about.

I turned it on, and my ears heard something that they've never heard before...crisp, clean, warm sound! 5ch mode is purely amazing. If your in teh market for a new reciever, make sure it has 5ch...your ears will thank you.

I was considering the sr 8000 but at the last minute, i decied to go with the 7000. I chose the 7000 because it was far cheaper than the 8000, and i felt that it would be overkill for my use.

Bottom Line: This reciever offers a lot for your buck including quality. You will have trouble finding other recievers that compete well against this baby for the same price.

Strength:

All around a great machine. It works well w/ HT and 2ch.

Weakness:

The remote is not backlit.

Marantz has built a great machine from the inside out. This unit provides very clear and concise musical reproductions. It works well w/ both HT and 2ch. It especially rocks the house w/ DTS.

This is my first AV receiver, and I have no regrets w/ the sr-7000. It produces plenty of sound and there is NO hiss. The problems noted previously about the "peak indicator" are found only when ANALOG signal is used. This can be cured by using an optical/coaxial digital cable.

The guys at Sound Lab upgraded my remote to the RC-1200 w/ no trouble. I am sure wherever you got your sr-7000, the people there would upgrade you at NO charge also.

I have this hooked up to:
B&W cc6 (front); 602's (front); 601's (surround); ASW210 (sub)
This is a stellar setup, I recommend it to everyone. Don't take my word for it, try it yourself.

Strength:

price, smooth sound

Weakness:

see text(peak indicator)

I've had the Marantz for about 2 months. I bought this receiver based mostly on recommendation from this site. For the price, it cannot be beat, the sound for music and movies is very good, very smooth and virtually no background hissing.
The only compliant i have is the peak indicator keeps lighting whenever an analog signal is used. I've even exchanged for another SR-7000 but the same thing happens. My dealer said this"quirk" appears on other SR-7000 they have sold, and told me to not worry about the peak indicator, and if worse comes to worse, just return it for refund. Has anyone experience this??

Strength:

Best sound for both music and Home Theater in its class and even receivers costing 200$ more.
Remote that learns everything is ergonomic and simple
Tons of inputs 3coax 2 optical (1 digital out)
S-vhs switching
5 ch stereo ode

Weakness:

Manual is lacking a bit of detail
Remote lacks backlighting (only glows)
Both of these are nitpicking to find anything wrong though

Well Ive had this receiver a few weeks replacing my old Onkyo prologic 535 receiver and all i can say is wow!!!!!!!!

-Plenty of clean power with great dynamic headroom creating much nicer sound than my old onkyo
-all the inputs and switching you could want
-great remote that is easy to use does macros and will learn all commands
-5 ch stereo and source direct are 2 listening modes that are very enjoyable
-preamp outs and inputs for all channels makes upgrading easy
In the 1000 and under price range (US$) I don't think you can find a better sounding receiver. The Yamaha 995 was a close second but was too bright and more expensive. The Denon 3300 while being slightly more feature rich with 7.1 inputs and component switching costs considerably more has a worse remote and lacks the clarity and soundstage the marantz provides while putting 200 bucks in my pocket which helped finance my new subwoofer!

Buy it you can't go wrong!!!! 5.1 rating -one for each channel!!!!!

confusing remote(initially)

I love this piece of equipment! I shopped for quite a while and this web site was a godsend. I almost went with the Denon 3300 but after a side by side comparison I decided to go with the Marantz. I thought very highly of the Denon but in the end I didn't feel that the higher cost of the Denon was justified. I got a great deal on the Marantz ($725.00) versus $999.00 retail for the Denon. The Home Theater capabilities of the 7000 are outstanding. James Taylor live at the Beacon Theater feels like your there.Shopping for some Metallica on Dvd next, gotta check out the other end of the spectrum on the 7000. Saving Private Ryan storming the beach will pin you to your seat. The Denon seemed a little brighter to me. whereas the Marantz had much more balance.I would recommend this piece to anyone shopping in that price range. I may be a Marantz customer for quite some time.

To Andy,

I'm in agreement with what you mentioned regarding Auto and Stereo when CD mode... EXCEPT if you select Speakers=Small, the subwoofer is set to ON (not off as you claim)

Verify what you typed and what really happens on your receiver...

Sounds good at low & high volumes. Elegant front panel and remote. I love this remote!

Weakness:

No backlight on the remote:-(

Well, I have had this Marantz product for two months now and I'm in love. This is my first receiver so naturally I'm excited. I've listened to my friends older (98 model) Pioneer 500 watt and new Sony $600 receiver. Both are 5.1 Dobly Digital surround sound and the Sony has dts as well. I think there is a big difference. The SR-7000 just seems more realistic. I can't really discribe to you what I mean but even my friend whom has the Sony even agreed with me. I'm sorry I don't have the model #'s. I do know that speakers make a big difference so I'm not knocking the Sony model. All my speakers are AR. My fronts are AR11, rear is AR15, center is CS25HO and my sub is the S112. All my cables are IXOS and AR. This is my first HT system and I could not be happier especially having digital cable, DVD, and SVHS to go along with it. If you are in the market looking to buy a receiver or other HT components go to accessories4less.com because that is where I purchased most of my system over time. This guy Mark is very knowledgeable and is NOT pushy. I talked to him for almost a half hour and did not make the purchase. I continued looking on the web but all the other places I called did not really want to spend time with me. I'm not an audio expert but I am a Computer Science major (with bad spelling) so I am fairly intellegent:-) So to know surprise I went back to accessories and purchased the SR-7000 and some cables. The packing was well done and shipping was fast to my surprise. Using my dads old Fisher speakers just did not cut it. So my father bought the AR11's, 15's and CS25HO also from accessories. Once again everything came well packed and worked. Two weeks after that I bought the sub and Mark gave me a great deal on it. Anyway back to the Marantz, if you do purchase this you will be happy but if you have nice speakers then you will love this receiver. Don't forget that you also need GOOD cables running to the speakers and other components. I do highly recommend IXOS products, it's like Monster without the high store price and brand name.

Everything, Price, Performance, just can't be beat at this price piont

Weakness:

Still looking

I wasn't going to post a review because I really did not have much else to add to all that have posted before me. But the review below this one bothered me. Isn't it obvious that he is talking about some other product, what is a PM80 anyway, can't find one anywhere.

Anyway. I have used this receiver now for more than three months. I listened to all the main brands and just could not believe that I could walk out of the local store with this unit for under $700. Nothing else came close on price for the performance.

This is my first AV type receiver and it was a breeze to setup. Not that all went perfect, but the basics were easy and the local dealer answered the few questions I had.

The remote is great. The best in my collection and the local dealer will upgrade to a backlit model for $50 when it is available.

The manual contrary to some other posts is quite informative and accurate. I have had no real problems with it. I wish that it had schematics included, but I can get those from the aftermarket.

I listen to all types of music. Classical, Jazz, Rock, punk, Rap. This unit does it all with amazing confidence and style. Smooth midrange and highs and a solid tight bass.

Home theater is a real joy now.

Thanks Marantz for making a product at a price that I can afford and bring some quality sound to my family.

I rate this unit as a 4.5 overall, there are other receivers out there that do a better job but cost 2-3 times as much. This unit gets a 5 at the price point, Deserves a listen.

This is an excellent product.

I used a Yamaha 2095 for a little over a year that was connected to Energy c6s and a Cambridge Audio D500 CD player. Although the 2095 is a good product music never sounded quite right: vocals were harsh; the bass lacked definition (I used an Energy ES-12 sub in conjunction with the c6s) and; the sound stage seemed narrow.

When I began using the sr7000 everything changed: male and female vocals were much smoother; bass became tighter and louder out of my c6s only which is an excellent thing since the sub-out does not function in the "CD DIRECT" mode; and the sound stage became noticeably wider. What also impressed me with the sr7000 and which I initially attributed to speaker placement but later discovered was just because the sr7000 was a better product than the Yamaha ,was imaging. My music tastes range from 1970s Motown/Stax (Marvin Gaye/Isaac Hayes); classical, vocal/instrumental jazz and new music including Jamiroquai and various rave/electronic stuff - the sr7000 does a great job with all of it

I also used the 2095 for HT and the sr7000 has outclassed it in that department. The Matrix, Blade, Crimson Tide, T2, The Replacement Killers and Saving Private Ryan dvds all sound much, much better. In my humble opinion, if you really want to audition the sr7000 for HT get a dvd copy of Das Boat - a real sound experience. The rest of my HT set up consists of an Energy AC-300 center and a pair of Energy Encore satellites for the rear.

I would recommend the sr-7000 to anyone in the market for a top notch receiver that is excellent for music listening and HT at a very respectable price. In addition, the sr7000's remote is far superior to that of the 2095.
