Strength:

quality/price ratio, remote.

Weakness:

Few at this price point. I found the volume levels a touch low for HT in my large room.

I had this unit for 3 months and have nothing bad to say about it. I believe it is great value for what it is but I felt it was the weak link in my setup as I spent 4x as much on my speakers. My only complaint was in Home Theatre when I really wanted to listen to it loud the amp just wouldn't push the volumes I wanted.

My setup:

FS: Klipsh KLF-20
C: Klipsh KLF-C7
RS: Klipsh KLF-10
Sub PSB subsonic 5
Sony Dvd
Toshiba HD 50" projection

My dealer in Ottawa has a 100% trade in value for the first year...so I upgraded to the Marantz SR-19EX and am very happy....although this set me back an additional $900. If you can afford the 19ex go for it....there is much more clarity and power and transition speed.

Strength:

exeptionnal 2 channels stereo, built quality, many features, remote, nothing beat's it for the price.

Weakness:

- none for the money

If you're a music lover and you like natural sounds, this is the number one choice. For home theater, you have all the decoders, except the DTS ES but you know there isn't lots of movies recorded in dts-es. This amp has an audiophile quality sound, music players will love it.
I have Lynn speakers for front and they sound perfect.

*** SOUND QUALITY ***, Jazz, Blues, Rock % Disco...perfect... smoothness, high definition, multiple room, DTS, 5 Ch. stereo, ON SCREEN DISPLAy and all the features...close your eyes, put a Jazz cd's and enjoy the prence of the band in your living room...

Weakness:

well, humm, may be remote? hard to remember everything it does... no A/B speakers...that's about it...

After buying and returning and testing all the amps above, playing my 3 favorite cd's and many movies, trying many diferent set of speakers, i finally bought the sr-7000..and yes it is totally different in sound reproduction...
Yamaha has the most technical cpu's and dozens of dsp's well the sound is everything but natural. it's the same for all the models...I was disapointed because i wanted son bad a yamaha, with the marantz you hear more musical instruments, more definition, no muffle sound over voice like in the yam, denon or the yam. DON'T BE FOOL BY THE MODEL YEAR!!! MARANTZ DON'T NEED ANY REVAMP!!! we audiophile, do not need 6-7-8-9-10 channels!!! we need good 2 ch stereo, and the 5.1 or dts for movies no echoes, delays, effects... it destroy the sound. Who would need 54 DSP's???

Forget about brand names, don't be narrow minded, just plug in your speakers and listen to it with your eyes shut!!! you'll hear the difference. For my money, (I can't afford a $10000 system), there is nothing that can beat it.

I give it a TEN STARS.

Buddy, Your audio synopsis on the Marantz is as flawed as your vocabulary.

If 2 channel stereo is your "bag" as you say it is, perhaps you should have looked at the Integra 5.1 or 7.1... more refined and neutral sound. No harshes like Yams, and no muddy overly warm bass like Marantz.

After reviewing a friends new Integra receiver, I have had to come to the disheartening conclusion that the SR7000 needs a major re-vamp for 2001... the design is at least 2 years old now.

It lacks:

Component Input
THX Certification
6.1 sound
Backlit Remote

Sorry for not mentioning this in my previous review.

To even out my previous rating, I will give it 1 star.

OK...this isn't a review, but I will give it 5 stars because I have used this fantastic reciever.

I just wanna know why a lot of people lately ar posting 3, 4 or 5 times. Just one post people. If you don't like the product, post ONE negative review. Posting 4 or five reviews and giving it 3 or 2 stars isn't going to bring done the average enough to satisfy your dislike for the product. Same with people posts 5, 5 star post. This isn't going to combat the bad reveiws. Just one post...it doesn't screw up anything. I hate coming on here and see that there are 5 new post, hoping to get some new insight on the product only to find out that is 5 of the same review, that pisses me off.

Be mature people, if you don't like the product, fine, and if you like it, that's fine to. Just don't wast the space and time of others.

Peace out.

Strength:

Excellent two channel and 5.1. 5-channel stereo is good Denon a bit better IMHO. Build/Warranty and reliability so far. Great remote except for not being backlit.

Weakness:

Lack of component video switching, which is a non issue for me. No Digital EX built in, Non Issue again. I did not want to spend more money on more speakers, plus my wife would kill me if I rearranged the family room again to add two more speakers. Better binding post would be preferred. Could use a bit more power since I have some very power hungry NHT 2.5i's, but for the price it's good.

Back ground:
If you're reading this review you probably already own the unit, are contemplating buying the receiver or own another receiver of this level. Like most of us, I look for equipment that will give me the best quality sound for the dollar you spend. If not you would have separates. Especially when you have to convince your significant other for the need to upgrade.

I consider myself an avid listener with good ear for music and a respectable budget for my home entertainment system. I spent a good amount of time researching receivers in the $600-$1200 price range. So my search began back in Feb. of 2000 with some of the usual suspects to compare with Denon 3300,4800, Onkyo 777, Integra DTR-7, Yamaha 2095, Sony 777ES and of course the SR8000. Many of the receivers had different qualities that I liked, but depending on your speakers you may or may not enjoy certain qualities each receiver demonstrates. I was fortunate enough to buy direct from Marantz (Phillips employee purchase) for an "A" stock unit so I was already leaning towards Marantz, but the Integra DTR-7 was also nice for two channel. I steered away from Denon due to potential problems, but it to had some great qualities.

The sound:
The SR7000 and for that matter most Marantz amplifiers have a certain sound that I was not able to describe well in words until I research Sterophile's glossary of terms and found the term that I think fits. Sheen- means A rich-sounding overlay of velvety-smooth airiness or guttiness. A quality of outstanding high frequency smoothness and ease. I think that fits, look it up. That was the first time I heard that term.
The SR7000 also allowed my NHT's to gain a larger soundstage in 2-channel and in 5.1 mode movies were more dynamic as well as detailed. 5-channel I do not use often but it's good when there are several guests over. Other then that I usually use direct mode and don't bother with the other fields.

That type of sound may be good for some speakers and bad for others. More expensive amps/pre-amp combinations do it better. In fact, I have friends with some extremely high-end gear. Some of which try to replicate a warmer more expensive tube equipment sound. That sound is what occurred after changing out my Pro-logic Sony ES900 receiver with the SR7000. I am not saying by any means it equaled my friends systems, but it brought the sound closer to the sound I hear on much higher end equipment.
There is no hiss, or for that matter, no electromechanical or cosmetic problems at all with the unit.

Experimentation stage:
I was looking even more impact from my 2.5i speakers so I bought a more powerful external amp for $250.
I was fortunate enough to be able try it out before I bought it. So I moved some of my equipment around including running a 300-400watt Carver (4.0t) amp direct to the 2.5i's by passing the power from the SR7000. The sound with just the Carver amp was a bit harsh on the high end, but the bass was much more dynamic and very well controlled. I then Bi-amped my 2.5I's with the SR7000 driving the Mids and highs, then the Carver driving the woofers. Bam!! That was the ticket. This will delay my move to a separate 2-channel system for a while. Now I am spending more of my music collection.
This may negate the logic to upgrade to something like the SR8000 or even SR19 other then the remote. Try this is you have speakers that can be Bi-amped. It will be the best investment you could make.
My existing equipment is as follows,

Speakers NHT 2.5I, NHT AC1 and
NHT 1.2 mounted on the walls
Velodyne FSX1200
DVD/CD Sony S3000 (CD/DVD) Great CD transport. No DTS oh well.
Marantz SR 7000
Carver 4.0t magnetic field amp. (Megawatts) BI-amp to woofers
Interconnects from MIT and Kimber cable
Speaker cables from MIT
Finally one of the most important components the room.
It's 15ft. W X 22ft. L 9ft. H. Slab floor with Tile and large area rug. So it's a bit hard and lively.

I give the receiver 5 stars for value due to price I paid. Over all 4.5 stars because it does most things well add some more power and wow! No one should give any component in this range 1 to 2 stars just to lower the average.

A note to other reviewers on their reviews both good or bad. List the accompanying equipment you have or have heard when making your comments, because you can't judge one component with out the facts. Then again it's just my opinion. Happy listening.
