Strength:

High amperage, easily pushes the 100's to create an open and airy soundstage without breathing hard. So quiet that certain musical passages can scare the heck out of you if you're not expecting them.

Weakness:

No DD Prologic II, only 5 amplified channels. But that's all I need.

Incredibly built product. No corners were cut here. Sure, it doesn't have all the bells and whistles that some more current models do, but what it does do, it does oh so well. Hooked up to my Paradigm 100 v2's the music washes ove listeners like velvet. So clean, crisp and unadulterated. Kick in the center channel and surrounds with LOTR cranked and the lights low, and the audio carries you away to middle earth. Hand-built with hand picked components. Marantz did good with this one. I bet there are a few more out there that can be had for a very good price. Oh, and the remote is a pure work of genius, though a bit hard to program at first.

Strength:

Sound clarity. Power. Design. The remote control.

Weakness:

MSRP price? I guess not the price I paid...

Best receiver I ever listened. I still haven't listened to any super high-end receivers, but I'm more than pleased with this piece of equip. I'm begging to build my system now, so for now I have the Marantz 300+1 8100 DVD player and the Marantz SR-14EX. I only have for now the two front speakerst that are a pair of Paradigm Studio-80s. Great sound, but I think the 80's lack a bit of bass for my taste. The clarity in the middle-range of the SR-14 was surprising for me (an strength of the speakers I guess also), you can listen sounds you ever listened before. In my little knowledge of high-end audio I think this is a great piece of equipment. Also I received instead of the remote 5000i the 5200 B&W with Base...

I too am amazed the crap people say. And that any idiot can write a review! For the people who are blessed enough to own this thing, be greatful! Let me se if i get this right. The SR-18 not es, just 18 was receiver of the year for TWO YEARS IN A ROW by Audiophile magazine and this is better? Hmmmmm. Ditto to the comment of Onkyo as a door stop. If you want DPL2 and all the extras, go to best buy and get a sony. You will lots of features there. If you want JUST straight performance? Buy this. Straight muscle, just clean.

Strength:

Quality all around, sound/build

Weakness:

For some, there might not be enough bells and whistles

It''s too bad any idiot is allowed to write a review. I own the SR-19(a couple of steps below the SR-14EX). As I read the reviews about no Pro-LogicII or lack of more channnel amplification(6.1/7.1), it strikes me that some salesman convinced these people that PLII or more speakers is the second comming of surround audio Jesus. And the whinning about a couple of dollars. Buy cheap, get cheap. One guy talked about Onkyo. Go ahead, it doubles as a doorstop. The Marantz SR series receivers are first-class backbones for almost any system. Save your money and let Marantz power some decent speakers too, not JBL or some other mass market boxes. 5 quality speakers will outperform 6 or 7 Circuit City brands. It''s a shame when people put their ignorance in print.

Strength:

Awesome soundstaging and clarity.

Weakness:

$$$

First of all, Morgan's review was insanely critical about the SR-14. Although I agree it sounds identical to the SR-18, it doesn't deserve a 1 on the overall. You guys pretty much summed it up well. I opted for the SR-18 and used the extra cash to buy some M&K 150 speakers and got myself a Phillips Pronto remote which is identical to the RC5000i. This setup is incredible.

Strength:

Very accurate and controlled, sonically neutral

Weakness:

Price, new pricing might make it good value

I haven't bought this unit yet but I am thinking about it.
I agree it is expensive, however I disagree with Craig that the Anthem mops the floor with 14ex. Marantz has done an incredible job with this puppy. I have listened to the Anthem over and over (with MCA 5 Series II amp)and then listening to the 14ex. I can't believe I am saying this but to me the Marantz is more musical. Even though the Anthem might have a little more headroom I think the sr14ex is better value for the $1800 less Canadian Dollars. Not to mention the sweet remote.

The 14ex has bur-brown dacs, and motorola dsps and is completely housed in a copper chasis.

Forget the money for a second, I have yet to hear a receiver that even comes close to this.

I will be buying in a couple of days, If anyone has any advise I look forward to reading.

Solid Build, true musical ampts

Well I did it, I purchased the Marantz SR14!All I can say is WOW! The difference in Music is just amazing compared to the denon. I dont understand why, because with the Denon I bypassed the main fronts and used the MA700's. Anyone no why? are the ampts in the SR14 better than the MA700's? or is it the processing? I figured out I can bypass14's main and use the Mono blocks, but Iam going to hold off for now, the SR14's sounds so much better. My golds have never sounded so nice, it is just like I purchase new speakers! The Marantz is an a/v you will not look back on, it does not have DP2, but I would never use it anyway. The SR14ex is built to last, with high performance amts. I have owned the whole Denon line, except the 5800, I had the 3300, 3802 and the 4800, not one of those a/v's came close to the sr14. Anyone needs Energy speakers, PSB speakers or Sim products, do email me, I will send you to a shipper who will give you the best pricing, and with the Exchange you will not go wrong, it will be like getting 50% off.

*CLEAN POWER, CHAMPAGNE COLOR MATCHES MY HR-S9600U SVHS.

Weakness:

*PRICE IS A JOKE FOR HAVING NO DOLBY PRO-LOGIC 2!

The clean power on demand is nice to have, but NO
DOLBY PRO-LOGIG 2 at this price is a CRIME, I wish
the sales guy told me this up front instead of saying
it has everything "several" times!

I have way too many DOLBY PRO LOGIC-VIDEOS begging
to be turned into 5.1 channel sound, INDIANA JONES
TRILOGY and STARWARS TRILOGY just to name a few, that
would benifit from DOLBY PRO-LOGIC 2.

I just paid $2800.00 for an OUT-DATED reciever
with NO PRO-LOGIC 2, I THINK NOT, its on its way
back tommorow. My ONKYO-989 sounds just as clean
and with more bass!

IT IS NOT WORTH THE PRICE!

Hold off for the next version with DOLBY PRO-LOGIC 2,
especialy if you have a large VHS collection of movies
that are not currently on DVD.
