Strength:

hook-ups, price, previous brand experience

Weakness:

user's manual

RX-8000VBK After carefully connecting all of the cables, and even more carefully arranging them, I forced myself to read, and re-read the manual throughout the set-up process. I even used a tape to measure the speaker cones. The full tweaking process went on for days. A well written manual would have helped a lot. But, I think it was worth it. I have experienced none of the problems other's have written about. I like the fine control the "slow" volume adjustment allows. It sounds great. The digital surround modes are fantastic, which makes the ProLogic appear "weak". Thanks to all the people that gave up and returned their's, I got a terrific deal.

Strength:

Simply put, great price, lot of features, and ugly manual (like 99% of equipment's :) learn to love them.)

Weakness:

Given my hatred for the JVC TV remote on our television here, this remote control is just as ugly, and complicated. Seeking out a new remote purchase to control DVD/Receiver/TV. Otherwise, I see no weaknesses that are of concern for me.

This is one helluva receiver for the price. I, living in an apartment, am not in need of such a super loud receiver. A fellow got two $750 fines and lost all his audio equipment a couple weeks ago. So, I went on a search to find a receiver that would be good for medium-soundlevel movies, like Saving Private Ryan, Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, etc (yes, I love war movies :)). So, I went through a lot of decisions, I was looking to spend

Strength:

Incredible Flexibility

Weakness:

No switching between S-VHS and RCA video

Overall, this reciever has performed flawlessly. The hiss which some people have reported is most likely due to their source signal. When used with digital inputs from DVD, DBS or CD the volume can be maxed out without any noticeable hiss. The annoyance someone metioned earlier about mixing S-VHS and RCA video inputs is a bit of a problem though. If you have a video source with only RCA outputs, you can not use your S-VHS connections from your DVD, DBS or S-VHS VCR simultaneously. It's either one or the other. Nonetheless, don't let this stop you, a little creativity should help you get around that. I have had great success with JVC's higher end equipment. Their lower end models seem to suffer as far as audio and video quality goes, but you can probably say that for a lot of brands. Compulink is a great feature also if you feel like going JVC all the way, it lets you use only one remote for absolutely everything.
Anyway, I talk too much. I don't think this product deserves some of the bad rap that some of the previous reviewers had given it.

S-video I/O, Fr a/v input, On Screen Programming, Banana Terminals on all channels, 3 digital inputs, assignable dig. inputs,

Weakness:

Dvd control on remote only runs JVC,

This unit has the most features by far for the price. The most stunning advantage is the overall sound quality for the money. This thing specs out at 120 watts/ch @0.02%thd, and at 60-90 watts is very clean. I have the xv511 Jvc DVD and together the make a great duo. The hiss that someone reported doesn't exsist on my set-up.(use a real speaker)

I have a sat. hooked up via toslink(optical) and even the news sounds incredible. Have had no snaps or pops. The sub out needs to be attuenated as the signal out is very strong, but what a presence!!

all in all this is a great unit for any home theater set-up!

Strength:

s video inputs, on sreen display, ease of use.

Weakness:

no ac oulets on back

I have had this for about one month. Paid 399 at circuit city. Sounds great. Have not had any of the hissing problems that have been reported by other users. It does decode and play DTS audio cd's.I had considered the sony strdb 930 but remote operation is just to much of a pain and it only sounds just slighly better than the jvc.

JVC speakers suck, do not use them!!

I bought this reciever when they first came out. I've had 0 problems with it. just when I thought it sounded great, I went and bought a sound meter and Avia's Home Theater test DVD.. and set the system up with that.. now it sounds absolutely fantastic. Now if Jvc would make quality speakers I would be in heaven. Alot of people don't like this product nor would they any other because they have crap for speakers, put a good pair of speakers behind this unit and you will be very satisfied. oh, and use the darned optical inputs whenever you can..I only gave it four stars on the overall because it's just simply not a higher end reciever but, if your looking for a stereo that will keep up with the jones' you would be hard pressed to find anything better at this price :)

Reliability-??????

My unit just died on me. Fortunately, there is a 2 year warranty on the unit for parts and labor. I bought this receiever April -2000 .
The receiver just went dead while I was using it. The front panel display would not light up when I push
the on button. Oh well, it is now in the process of being repaired and will be a few weeks before I will
get it back. I am wondering what may have caused it to go bad? There are no external fuses.
Maybe there is an internal fuse that may have blown. I wonder if heat was cause of the problem.
I was told that there are internal resistors that could have gone bad. Time will tell-I intend to get
an explaination for the cause of the problem from the technician who will be repairing the unit.
I will post the cause for the failure here when I get the receiver back.

Overall, this is a good product when it works. This was the first time I had a problem with it.
I hope it can be repaired and there will be no further problems.

The HISSING! The volume control, the remote.

I must say i am a bit disapointed.. The hissing is there.. The bass isn't that good.. the remote could be better..

But its a GOOD unit. Thou i am disapointed on it i am still happy i bought it. Just thought i would get more. Or not get the bad stuff. Like the volume control. U cant move it FAST the it just skrews up and does whatever it feels like. little anying maybe :) I'm sure there is better units out there for the same price but i stick with this. It serves my purposes so to say. To play my mp3s :)

Strength:

Optical Digital Out, Multibrand Remote, DD, DTS, SVideo, onscreen menu, banana plugs for all speakers, good sound

Weakness:

Very bright and big display which can not be turned off, same with a red power led, rear channels need adjustment

This is the 8000VBK model which replaces the 888VBK.
It's just great, having in mind I paid $299.00 online for this receiver. Has all functions you might ever need including the digital output which is important for me because of my MD recorder. The remote is a multibrand remote, works with my non-JVC TV and cable box. The sound is very nice and also stereo TV sound is much better than on my previous receiver (Sherwood). I also like the speaker connectors. A bit pity is the very bright and big display on the front panel, that you can not turn off while watching a movie. You can assign a video source to an audio source, like the TV or DVD to a CD player output, which is quite nice.
I recommend this one to anyone willing to experience great sound and features for less than half of similar products from other producers. This one is even cheaper than the 888VBK - JVC says, that the competition squeezed the prices - good for us.
