Strength:

I purchased the JVC RX-517v as a refurb in 1995 and it still works like it rolled off the assembly yesterday. The unit generates 80 watts per channel in stereo (it can also power five speakers in surround sound) and I run it through 140 watt capacity Yamaha speakers (but not at max volume else I blow out the windows on the townhouse). No distortion and you can hook in six devices like a turntable, cassette deck (hey, I’m old), DVD 📀 player, TV 📺, etc. Built in FM tuner (AM too but even I don’t listen to AM). Looks nice too. Not sure exactly what I paid for the unit 25 years ago but my JVC RX-517v has been worth every dime.

Weakness:

A little bass-y even when adjusted below dead center. (With the loudness feature activated I had neighbors knocking on the front door 🚪.)

At the salvation army. I needed something to test some cerwin vega ls 10 speakers on the spot, before I bought them from the place. So I scanned around the place for something to power the vegas. I saw this sitting there, an unassuming gray receiver. I then ripped up some nearby lamp cords and hooked up the speakers. Next I needed something to play. I so happened to find another jvc in the form of a cd player, The jvc xl-f108bk cd 5 disc changer. I put on the nearest cd I could find, the matrix soundtrack. When I powered everything up, the monster came alive. It was set to max volume on the knob. Rock is dead by Marylin Manson started blasting from the Cerwin Vegas speaker. Scaring all the customers with the sudden violent addition of Marylin. This thing was on full blast but sounded crystal clear with no distortion. Much of it has to do with that fantastic Jvc cd player and the Cerwin Vegas. But the Jvc reciever was powering the vegas without breaking a sweat. When I found the knob and lowered the volume. I next put on another track. on a cd that was already in the Cd disc changer, Natalie Imbruglia Torn. It sounded delicious. I had forgotten how good compact disc sounded. This whole setup at the salvation army was nearing the level of hi fi, at least for rock, maybe not jazz. But I built a kickass system on the spot with Salvation Army gear. I took every thing home for 20 dollhairs and its my garage setup.

i now have the rx-517v that i bought used some time ago and it was mint then, before i had a rx-707v which is the same yr reciever just a step above this one.as far as jvc in the early 90s was a workhorse and u could run it hrs on hrs without problems at high volumes.i bought the 707 from circuit city in 1994 and we partied every fri and sat nite for yrs and never had to repair anything.i just took off cover every once in a while and vacumned the dust out.it was rated at 100 wpc rms at 20-20.000 htz at 0.007 thd and thats low distortion compaired to anything u buy now,u look and see.i even bought 120watt transistors in 1999 and put them in and it picked up the pwr even more.in 2006 one night it finally let go all together it would power up but no sound.i did see where 2 resistors was burned but i never messed with it.its paid 4 itself and ill fix it sometime in the future.the rx-517v is still going and sounds fine.i run a 12 inch sub under my nitestand with 2 defenitive technology dr-7 and 2 small 2 way radio shack speakers for surround.jvc doesnt have bass & treble or eq settings last time i wanted a new reciever so i just went and bought a crown ce-2000 and 2 jbl tr-125-2 cerwin vega re-30 and a berringer vmx1000 mixer and blew the living room windows loose.but buy a old jvc and u will love them they are like a sherman tank.the ja series are very appealing to the eye,i have a ja-s22 that is 40wpc and its not a pwr house but its enough to enjoy.thats about it,dont take anything away from japan victor company, jvc,u will get your dollars worth, mike
