I bought the HK after comparing HK and Onkyo. I decided on the HK due to the extra power the HK had over the Onkyos I had heard. I had previously had an older HK rated at I think 45-or-50 watts per channel. To tell you the truth I actually thought the older HK sounded better. Then there is HK fake 7 channel surround. There are no speaker outs on the back of the receiver for true 7.1 only 5.1. The Onkyo at least has outputs for 7.1 speakers while the HK only has rca outs to use an external amp to power the additional speakers. So needless to say I returned the product after a few short days. I did not see 925 dollars worth of performance, just a lot of gimmickry and bright lights.

Strength:

Fantastic sound and great looks. Excelent power, don''t believe the low power ratings.

Weakness:

This unit has no A-B speaker switch. This unit comes with 2 remotes, the large remote which is use for selecting surround modes and programing. It stops working whenever it feels like! Very annoying!

I have owned the HK AVR 520 now for about 3 months. I''ve held back writing a review until now so I could get to know this reciever. Let me say this is the first high end reciever I''ve ever bought and , I couldn''t be more pleased. I''m very impressed with the surround sound on movies. I am also very pleased with the sound when listening to music. 85 watts x 2 may not sound like a lot but it''s the strongest 85 watts I''ve ever heard.

Strength:

Clean sound at all levels of volume. Looks great. Does it all.

Weakness:

Remote is tricky.

This is simply the best reciever in its class. SO CLEAN!!! Plenty of inputs, and a great display. It is 75watts but sounds like 150. HK knows what they are doing and they are doing it right.

Strength:

Great sound, plays very clean throughout all volumes!!! On screen displays, back lit remote, DP II, front jacks including optical and coax ins/outs

Weakness:

Remote is a little tricky!!!

Great receiver! Very strong/warm sound even at higher volumes. This piece even pushes larger speakers effortlessly! A whole lot of receiver for the money. This is my second HK that I have owned and I can only continue to say great things about their products!!! Plays great for movies and music. Multi-source is a great feature, I use my old HK to run my lanai speakers. Remote control is very nice but a little tricky to use! Overall a very nice piece for under $1000 dollars. My speakers: Front-mains JBL L7''s Center-JBL CL505 Rears-Polk M3IIWHT Sub-Velodyne 12" CHT12 Outdoor Lanai-Infinity Outrigger Jr.

Strength:

GOOD CLEAN POWER. PLENTY OF INS AND OUTS.

Weakness:

Not enough optical inputs;only 3. Could have used 4 or 5. NO A/B SPEAKER SELECT SWITCH. COULD HAVE USED ONE MORE HD INPUT. (USE 1 FOR X-BOX ,1 FOR DVD, AND ONE FOR SATELLITE)

Great receiver. I CRANKED UP THE RECEIVER ALL THE WAY AND GAVE EVERY LAST WATT TO MY 701 BOSE SPEAKERS. SOUNDED VERY CLEAN.( EVEN THOUGH THE RECEIVER PUTS OUT ONLY 75 WATTS OF POWER.) SOUNDS GREAT WITH MOVIES AND MUSIC. I LOVE THIS RECEIVER AND AM VERY HAPPY WITH IT. WORTH EVERY PENNY.

it cant be just 75 watts. no way

Weakness:

pain in the a## to install

this is a very good product harmon came up with.its very great with audio. its hard to tell the diffrence in home theater when i compared it to marantz 6200 but for the features it definitely offers more. not to mention that it looks so much better compared to the other receivers that i looked at. its not the easiest reciever to hook up but once you figure it out, your on your way to enjoying this baby.i cranked the 520 all the way up to -05 db with my boston vr-30 main''s,vr-10 center, and vrs sorrounds to santana''s supernatural live and me and my freinds had a blast.if you can get the 520 for under a thousand.then please get this receiver

Strength:

Great looks, clean power and excellent peak handling, flexible menus and audio functions,DPII Music surprisingly good as are L7 and DTS NEO 6, Set up and balance was easy considering how weak the manual is.

Weakness:

Remote. Subwoofer output does not provide enough user control of crossover. Pre-out only for 6.1/7.1 operation. No A/B speaker select. DSP modes indistinguishable from one another

Replaced an old HK AVR30 with this unit. Old HK is now in den closet receiving the multizone output from the 520. I''ll spare the audio trash talk and just say it sounds great for both movies and music. Digital motion picture soundtracks and my Davis and Brubeck sound spectacular.
