Strength:

Clear sound and controlled output even at loud volume. Very nice and clean construction with not too many buttons and a display that shows only necessary information.

Weakness:

Lack of a 6 channel input for updating to new digital decoding formats. Small buttons on the remote control.

I have used this receiver for about 2 years.
It have always provided a good, controlled sound on both stereo and multichannel modes. The hall and matrix modes are totally useless, but I never use them anyway.

I recently bought a power amplifier HK/5800 at the very low price of 350 from J&R for bi-amping my Infinity Kappa 6.1i front speakers and having more output available for the center and rear channels. The result is a very pleasant and smooth sound from the main speakers in stereo mode, for both CD's and music from DSS.

It is unfortunate that no 6 channel input is available, and when I include a DVD, I will have to update my receiver. This will happen once all formats of DVD are unified (no regional codes, no new inventions like DVD-audio or SACD), if that ever happens.

In the meantime I will continue using my VCR, standard CD, cassette deck and this nice combination of AVR70+PA5800 that is most of the time used for music in stereo mode, where it performs at its best.

Strength:

Serious Amplifier. Pro Logic Decoding very good.

Weakness:

VERY HEAVY

Wow, This thing rocks!! I did a side by side comparison with a Kenwood, Pioneer and Yamaha and this unit blew them away! Rich, natural sound, deep, deep lows and transparent highs combine to make a fabulously rich sound. I was amazed this thing sold at Circuit City and the like. Seems like it would have ended up mostly at the high end stores for people who wanted serious bang for the buck. The pro-logic decoding is as good as it can be. Movies sound like movies should. There's no end to the power reserves. I can't seem to over work it, even with my Infinity speakers. I'd have to run out of the room if I cranked it up all the way. Can't be beat for the price!!

Strength:

Crystal Clear Sound Stage and Incredible Response and Dynamics

Weakness:

Clicking sound when changing volume levels

I have had this receiver for over 5 years and consider myself lucky to be one of the few who own it. If you like the true nature of music, I don't mean PL, DD and DTS and all that other crap that says music sounds better when you send it through more resister and filters, I mean if you want nothing to interfer with your music, other than the orginal dynamics that HK has to offer, this is the AMP that you want. The more absolute beautiful sound that you can find in an Amp that only costed $1000 when it first came out. If you find one, buy it!!!! It's well worth it.

My system:
HK AVR70
HK FL8350 (I don't recommend, although sound awsome)
Monster HTS2500 Power Center
NHT 1.5i
Custom Made 22" 35lbs stands

ITS KILLER IN STEREO,HALL,MATRIX,MOVIE,3ST AND P/L,IT SOUNDS AS CLEAR ON LOW VOLUME AS IT DOES ON A HIGH VOLUME EVERY CHANNEL IS CRISP AS CAN BE WITH NO FAULT, IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A GREAT RECEIVER AND A DAM GOOD PRICE LOOK NO FARTHER THAN THE H/K AVR70, ITS AS CLOSE AS YOU CAN GET TO DIGITAL WITHOUT THE $PRICE$

Strength:

Overall sound in music. Very very very very clean and clear.

Weakness:

No inputs for Dolby Digital, small buttons on remote.

This is an awesome receiver. I have absolutely no complaints so far, except maybe with the remote. Sure, it doesn't have the 5.1 inputs, but I use it for stereo music anyways. I don't know how this unit is in a home theater system, unfortunately.

Anyways, this is a great receiver for stereo music. Very clear sound with great highs and booming, tight lows. Look no further for a music receiver. I got it at a great price of $180 from the classifieds here at Audioreview.com. (Thanks Dan!) ANother good site to look at is audioshopper.com, or Ubid.com. Of course, Ebay.com is always good! I would highly HIGHLY recommend this receiver!
