Strength:

really smooth sounds, bass, attractiveness, many ins and outs

Weakness:

no Dolby EX or DTS es, the trouble of calling HK for a new remote

smooth warm sound, more powerful than the modest 70 watt x 5 rating. attractive, many ins and outs. More bass than my Denon and Sony AVR. Remote suck a-- but HK will send you a similar but improved version than works. Did I mention really sweet sounds.

Weakness:

the receiver easily over heats i have this in a tv stand with at least 6 inches above it but after an hour or two it overheats and wont accept input from the remote

i bought this receiver after the great reviews on this site and the good price i got from one call with free shipping and no tax. i use this with only two speakers at the moment and besides the overheating issue mentioned below, i love it

Smooth sound, easy to set up and operate, noise generator and mic in remote, good phone customer support (HK).

Made in China.

Unit failed after connecting center channel speaker, no center sound. Purchased with Infinity speakers (thin and weak). Traded it in on an Onkyo 797, harsh sound, failed in two months, processor (other review).

Strength:

Beautiful crisp, warm, detailed sound. As good as a stand alone Amp with music, with the bonus of excellent home theatre reproduction.

Weakness:

Nil. Awesome.

This is simply an awesome A/V receiver. The quality of its music playback is on parr with what most stand alone amps provide. The music production is warm, powerful, detailed, and crisp. Home theatre playback is easily amongst the best. I looked at every receiver available whilst setting up my home theatre/music system and nothing came close. (other then all the other h/k gear). Do not be put of by the promise of only 5 x 70 watts home theatre, and 2 x 80 watts stereo, this is typical high quality Harman Kardon power, and is a very modest specification. This receiver was ahead of the competition who were usually claiming upwards of 100 watts. Try and you will buy!

Strength:

Tonal clarity, Logic 7, DTS ES, 7.1 inputs, build quality, looks,..oh and the price at OneCall

Weakness:

Not THX certifed and therefore no THX EX

I have just upgraded from 10 year old Onkyo Integra Dolby Prologic (which was a great receiver) to the H/K AVR 520 and all I can say is WOW. The tonal clarity is amazing. When compared in stores to Onkyo, Marantz, and others the H/K really shined in my opinion. DTS is the best sound medium in my opinion. When switching back and forth form DTS to DD, the DTS is much cleaner and crisper. DPII and DTS Neo are alright, but Logic 7 really shines for making regular 2 channel audio shine. I have the H/K 520 pushing 5 Infinity Overture 1''s and a Velodyne CHT-10. The DVD player is a new H/K DVD 50 on a 36" Mitsubishi. I can no say enough good things about this receiver. To quote Ferris Bueller, "If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up!"

Strength:

Clarity of sound, front input/output jacks, and excellent flexability.

Weakness:

None

I purchased an Onkyo TX-SV919THX ($1,400) receiver in 1996 and at the time it was the top of the line AV receiver on the market and the first THX certified receiver that I can remember. It recently stopped working and I wanted to upgrade to Dolby Digital and DTS. I read review after review and asked a local home theater installer what would be the best receiver in the $600 - $800 price range. I looked at the Denon 3801 and it had more surround sound modes like DTS ES, etc. I also researched the Pioneer 36TX that is THX certified.

However, I kept hearing how rich and detailed the Harman/Kardon receivers are and the reviewers were right. The AVR 510 runs circles around my Onkyo. DTS is awesome sounding and you can assign all the digital inputs to any input source. I love the remote and it has more power than I imagined a 70 watt per channel receiver could have. I think my neighbors will be complaining soon. Also, the AVR 510 cost less than the Denon and Pioneer. You might get a few more bells and whistles with their model but they can't match the rich detailed sound of the Harman/Kardon. Furthermore, If you have children the night mode is a wonderful feature. It lowers the bass and other excessive sounds without lowering the voices in the movie so you will not wake up the kiddies.

This is a wonderfully designed and built receiver and you can't beat the price. Check out the Sound & Vision Review in the June 2001 issue.

Strength:

The design, power, inputs & outputs, sound & sight

Weakness:

The remote, the buttons are scadderd and small. Minor price to pay for this piece.

I went to one of the local shops, and side by side, listened to the DS787, the Avr-510, and the Avr-7000. The Onkyo was $100.00 more and didn't sound even as good as the H/K's. Then I listened to the Avr's, and I just could tell $4-500.00 dollars differnt, to buy the more expensive avr-7000. I couldn't tell any differnce.
I listened to these in a room about the size of 30x20 and it sounded awesome. This receiver now sits in a room about half that size.(14x12) Maybe it's my speakers? Paradigm monitor 9's, cc-350, mini's for the rears, and last but not least pdr-12 sub. I owned a Denon avr-3300, and I was disappointed in it, to complex to set up and confused about the digital part of it. And loved the H/K so much, the bulk of the components are now H/K's. I went out and lost money to be more happy with the right products.

So, all I have to say is if you are looking for a hell of a receiver run don't walk and get you a Harman/Kardon Avr-510. I would have given six ******, but it only went up to 5

Strength:

great clean power,tons of inputs,design and construction,looks

Weakness:

zero

This reciever is the most complete unit I have ever owned, unparalled sound, tons of inputs, power is unbelieveable, compared to my sony which i really liked it is no comparison, the unit works flawlessely, sound for ht is right on,and there is a real difference in the different surround settings. As for the 2 channel stereo mode....using the dvd 50 with coax input made me hear music like ive never heard it!! its nice to have adequite power to run my speakers for that is what ive been missing for some time, unlike other mass market units that have inflated power ratings, this has true power and I am a harmon kardon buyer from now on.dont be fooled by the power ratings it is night and day better than my sony was.I believe if more people listened to any of h/ks new reciever line side by side with any mass market reciever they would hands down choose hk.Congrats hk youve given me a winner,i only wish you made vcrs cause i would love my rack to be all hk.My advice to anyone looking at sony, kenwood, pioneer, bose, yamaha,or any other common stuff found in best buy,circut....save a little more and go with any of the ten series, youll be glad you did

Strength:

1. Incredible sound with movies. love the crisp clarity and wide band width.
2. You can control volume on each speaker.
3. able to select large or small speakers (soul purpose to hear bass in these speakers besides the subwoofer).
4. easy to understand. I don't know why other people could not understand the instructions most of it is commen sense. Although I did have to say the remote was kinda confusing.
5. comes with DTS, 5.1 DD, D prologic, HDCD, and others.
6. able to connect several amps to it. (A+)
7. 70 watts per speaker not 70 watts broken up into several speakers.
8. night listening mode. I have infants and boy does that feature come in handy.

Weakness:

NO LOUDNESS BUTTON, comes in 8ohms only, music sounds good seperations is great BUT impact in music isn't as great as good, appearence isn't as good looking as older models

This is my first A/V receiver I am blown away by it's seperation in movies, clarity, impacts sound great in movie mode voices can be heard with no problem, BUT in cd mode not as good and I prefer listening to music with 2 speakers only don't get me wrong it does sound very good in music mode I'm just picky when it comes to my music. radio sounds great no problems there. overall you can't find a better A/V receiver for the money and even some more expensive units aren't as good in performance believe me I've heard them.

So if you're thinking of purchasing the AVR510 believe me you won't regret it. it has the power yes it's only 70 watts but it's high current you'll notice the difference when you hear it and the clarity is superb with no hint of destortion.
if I had the option to buy it again I would!!!
