Strength:

Sound quality, looks, lots of inputs, plenty of surround modes

Weakness:

EZSet

I initially started looking at Sony etc receivers but ended up looking at HK and Onkyo. In a straight demo between the HK and the Onkyo the HK won hands down and it looks a million times better. I only have two front speakers at the moment but it sounds awesome, the VMax actually helps spread the sound around a bit over straight stereo.
Only minus was the EZSet feature which wouldn't work at all, i think the meter on the remote is stuffed. I think manually setting the levels is better anyway.
Don't let the low power rating put you off - it has more than enough power to fill a decent size lounge room.
The $200 off i got ($1050 australian) convinced me.. i bought it the day after i heard it! You won't be disappointed with this one.

Strength:

High end amp for mid price, Many inputs and outputs for flexibility, Clean sound

I was aware that Harman Kardon has one of the best reps in the industry, so when I started looking for a receiver, it was one of the first ones I considered. This model is really in the same mid-fi price range as the Pioneers, Sonys, etc, but it has many of the same features of more expensive units. Tons of pre-amp outs, IR control out, etc.
I received my unit last week and I'm definitely impressed. Very cool system. Teamed with a set of Hafler speakers this thing just rocked. It's almost too much power for my little apartment. I recommend going to YourInsider.com before making any major purchase like this. Overall I'm happy with it.

Strength:

Easy setup, Menu navigation intuitive, lot's of optical/digital ports. Plenty of Power for 50W per channel. Wonderful digital processing.

Weakness:

Remote control, ez setup,

I have an interesting story, in that this unit is a replacement direct from Harmon Kardon, for my HK AVR300 which had lot's of problems. With all the previous posts on the AVR300 unit, no need to go there. This unit is in the home theatre setup in my bedroom and has more than ample power. I can say that this unit is absolutely outstanding. I have been putting it through the paces and am absolutely pleased with it's performance. I think that HK has done an great job on the QA of this step up from the AVR300. Kudo's to the product engineers.

Strength:

Really good resolution and clarity. It just sounds great!

Weakness:

Can't choose small front speakers in stereo mode. Remote.

I bought Harman/Kardon AVR 4000 (as it is called in Europe) 1 1/2 weeks ago and I am very pleased with it, except for two things...

1) I can't learn the remote any codes from my other remotes. But I have been told that this is a manufacturing fault and that there will be good remotes available soon. So this is OK, I'll just have to be patient a little while.

2) In the surround mode "Surr. Off" (stereo) I can not choose small front speakers. In all other surround modes it is possible and I have done that (since I do have small speakers all around and a powered subwoofer). And if I have choosen Surr Off as the default mode for an input, chooses that input and then changes the surround mode... then it suddenly is large front speakers in all surround modes!

I think this is a bug in the receiver's software, but I have been told that this is how it is supposed to be(!). So now I am forced to use 60 Hz as a cross-over frequency to the sub bass. How fun is that?

I would be very glad if anyone who can use small front speakers in stereo mode could send me an e-mail. I really could use some backing up when argumenting with H/K.

Even when using a too low cross-over frequency it sounds great in stereo. So I do not want to change this receiver for another one. But I would like to use 80 Hz instead, then I would give it five stars...

Strength:

Nice design, highly configurable, excellent output

Weakness:

expensive

I am very pleased with this unit. It is way underrated for output power. I have a CS400i center, and this pushes it hard. Inputs/outputs all over the place, cool, sleek design, and great sound make this unit complete. I looked at the Denon 2801 and the Yamaha 800, and I am very happy with my purchase of this unit.

What's up with the remote bashing? I think it is fine. Controls all my devices great except my replayTV (And it shouldn't control that)

You pay a little extra for the name with this unit, but then again, don't we all have a pair of Nike shoes and a couple Polo shirts?

Strength:

Look, crisp clean sound, ease of setup

Weakness:

remote

I got this as an "open box" special at CC for $499. I originally wanted the 510 but at $899 I couldn't justify it. Comparing the 310 and the 510 side by side, I figured the 310 would suit my needs just fine. When I brought it home, I found out that it was real easy to set up (maybe because I was familiar with my old harman kardon avr 300)
Took it through the motions and loved it. I think it actually sounds better than my 300. I really like the logic7 surround mode for music and tv. It DOES make a difference.
The remote on the other hand is a joke. I finally got my satellite to work thorough the remote but the button to change the channels is very hard to press and it responds really slow. I emailed HK to try to get a new one cuz I've heard that it did have problems . Haven't heard back from them yet, though.
Nevertheless, this is an awesome receiver and well worth the money I paid.

Strength:

For all of you HK lovers. Do you know what quality is? Very conservative on the power rating. clean power. surround sound, sounds good, Good power

Weakness:

Very pricey, Raspy sounding highs, very bright sounding, unnatural sounding, Reliability questionable, stereo sound is a little weak but sounds louder than and brighter than last years models, Avr 45 ,Avr 75.

Well Well its time for the good stuff! I don t know what you people really hear in this product. I think most people buy HK because of their reputation. Have any one checked out their repair bills lately,so where is the quality humm? What have you people been comparing them too. If you listen, the receiver sounds very raspy and unbalanced not smooth at all. It sounds like its been equed with an equalizer just in the 1k 2k all the way to about 16k. Sounds very thin and lacks deep rich sound. Bass is more effident than last years models but lacks richness and depth. If you guys are looking for deep rich sounds try the Onkyo 696 797 or 989 those are well rounded receivers that sounds well with just about any music and it puts realism, depth and richness back into your music. If anyone disagrees email me and we will talk amps and audio. I dare anyone to step to the plate. I give it a 4 for surround and a 1 for stereo!

Strength:

clean sound, power, looks, EZset, on-screen display, Logic7

Weakness:

no component video input, no ProLogicII

As something of a neophyte to high-end audio (I had been relying on a boom box as my stereo for years), I was not entirely sure how deeply invested I wanted to become in home theater. After doing a great deal of research, on the Internet and in retail stores, I realized that there truly was a crucial difference between low-end solutions (home-theater-in-a-box) and what you could get for just a bit more. Eventually, I got impatient with waiting for the perfect deal on the perfect system, and went with the best that I could find at that time (about a month ago). Fry’s had the 2001 Harman/Kardons on close-out, so I grabbed the 310 and matched it up to the brand-new Acoustic Research HC-6 system (www.soundprofessionals.com). Set-up was easy for the most part and performance consistently excellent. My main motivation was to take advantage of DVD surround sound, and that has been very very good, but I have been blown away by listening to my old CDs. Frankly, they sound incredibly better and make me wonder why I waited so long! Regular TV has certainly been improved by the 310’s Logic7, however I never seriously compared it with Dolby ProLogic II as I had intended. Since this model has been discontinued, you will only find them used or on special, but depending on what kind of deal you find, it is clearly a quality product. A final note: my setup is in a fairly large room, but I have had absolutely no problems with the amount of power. In fact, I have encountered no need to even push the receiver very hard.
