Strength:

Extremely easy to use and great sound and video reproduction.

Weakness:

Digital, DTS and DVD-A formats weren't around when when I purchased this unit. Now the system is limited, but sounds great.

This was the first true piece of stereo equipment I purchased and it has been a good one. The controls are easy to use (even for the wife)and the audio/video performance is tremendous.

I am currently upgrading my whole system, but this gem will not be leaving the household. The system will be either relegated to my daughters room or drive the upstairs speakers.

The AVR30 was great in its day and still has a place in a home where you don't need the newer audio/video formats.

Strength:

The hi-current is great the bass stays deep and true. Easy to use, and just plain sounds great. Hasen't let me down once.

Weakness:

No s-video inputs. Kind of dated once dolby digital became popular

When your ready to move up from Sony and JVC this is the unit to get. We all know you can spend $2000 on just a pre amp and that doesn't cover amps yet. but for the $1300 I paid about 2 weeks after it hit the stores it was a expensive, but not regretable purchase.

This receiver is awesome! It has plenty of A/V and V inputs (12), two remote controls, inputs for adding external amps, subwoofer output and the necessary surround modes + dolby pro logic. Because of it's high current amplifiers, the 50W per channel this receiver have is all that is needed, except by those who have a disco at home.
For someone who wants simple dolby pro logic processing, this receiver is a must, specially because you can get a new unit for around 450-500 bucks. A great deal!

According to some audio magazines, amplifiers and receivers can make no difference in the sound that comes out of your speakers. My ears tell me different. This receiver is much better sounding then the Technics GAX-690 it replaced for stereo only listening. I can listen to music all night and not get ear fatique.
The subwoofer level can be adjusted in all modes.
The technics sounded harsh and grainy in comparison.
In pro-logic,movies sound awesome. The center, surrond and subwoofer levels can all be controlled with front panel knobs.
For the price ,$450 new from the HK outlet in California, this is an excellent buy.
Caveat. No dolby digital decoder or 6 channel inputs.
Five stars for the sound and quality of build.

I hooked my AVR30 up to the Denon AVD2000 AC-3 decoder, works great., Let me know if you want instructions on how to do the same or if you have done it yourself, I would love to hear other ways to connect them. Thanks.

I have had the Harmon Kardon AVR30 for 5 years, before replacing it with the Yamaha DSPA1, just a couple of months ago. During the 5 years using the Harmon Kardon, i was completely satisfied with its reproduction in sound, the receiver was simple to use and its DSP modes were very straight forward and realistic. This is defintely a high-quality receiver for movies and music, The Dolby Prologic sound field excellent, back in 1994, it was the best! Although Dolby Digital and DTS is all the rave, Harmon Kardon AV30 never disspointed me, and til this day doesn't.

I bought the AVR-30 a week ago and I have hooked it to a pair of Bose AM5 Series 3 speakers. I now that Bose is not exactly top quality but the sound I am getting is much worse than the mini hifi's available in the market.I am only using the tuner, but it should at least be better than the $200 japanese min hi-fi systems available in the market.
Would appreciate all Help in letting me know where I have gone wrong.

Strength:

Simplicity of design, sound reproduction, durability.

Weakness:

Not Dolby Digital.

I purchased the avr30 used for $125.00 used, but in like-new condition. It's funny to think I paid the same amount for my receiver that other people have paid for some Fisher piece of garbage. I guess the name says it all, great sound, great design, great durability. Considering the sound quality, I am hesitant to go DD.

Strength:

Music Reproduction in 2 channel mode. Dolby prologic.
Front panel layout.

Weakness:

No dolby digital.

Simply the best receiver I have heard in reproducing two channel music. I've tried upgrading but I haven't found a receiver or integrated amp that reproduces sound better then this one.
