Strength:

Digital Ins and Outs. mp3 decoding. High Current clean power.

Weakness:

Some might say the remote is terrible. It is definitley not the best I have used, but after a couple of weeks it is not that bad.

I work for Circuit City so I have had plenty of time to demo a variety of receivers. Matching cost to benefits, this receiver out does itself. With 192 mhz processor and high current amplifiers it blows Onkyo, Sony, JVC, Kenwood, and the like right out of the water.

In all honesty the 110 out performed Onkyo's $2,000 model. The sound reproduction is unbelievable. When watching some of my favorite movies like the Matrix and the Gladiator I could hear things in the soundtrack that had not been audible before. At times you could hear a gentle breeze or the trickling of water. This receiver enables you to truly hear the movie the way it was recorded and meant to be heard.

Don't be intimidated by its space age looks or an average remote. This is the best product on the market in it's price range.

Just other side notes, it has binding posts which allow bannana plug connectors, as well as several s-video ins and assignable digital in's and out's (a must for anyone using their dvd player as a cd player too). Go out and buy this and I promise you will not be unsatisfied. Oh, and it even comes with a 2 year all inclusive warranty. The price on this product for what it has to offer is an Audiophile dream come true!

FYI

I went to Harman Kardon's web site (www.harmankardon.com) and e-mailed them concerning the problems I was having with my remote. I could not set it up to control anything but me receiver. I received a response about 5 days later asking me for my address so they could send me a replacement. I responded asking them if they had identified the problem because 2 worthless remotes fairs no better than one worthless remote. I received another response 3 days later, telling me that they were not privy to that information. They only knew that they had one they wanted to send me and it would most assuredly work. About 2 weeks later, I received a package via UPS. In that package was a shiny new remote, which read "AVR 210". It looks exactly like the remote for the 110 except it says “EZ Setup” on the top and takes 3 batteries instead of 2 (I knew thought the 110 looked like it needed another battery!) It would appear that they are replacing the faulty 110 remotes with those of the 210. It worked well enough. I can now do put away my 63 other remotes and use this one. BTW The new remote came with a nifty feature. It has a tiny little microphone in the front behind a few slits. This microphone is for the "EZ Setup" function. If you set your receiver volume to 15 and sit (with the remote) were you normally sit to watch movies, press the button labeled SPL and hold it. It will use the microphone to set up all of your speaker volumes to your position in the room. This way all of you speakers have the same relative volume to your position. COOL! I am now satisfied.

My previous review is posted much earlier. Look for it :-)

Strength:

looks incredible, strong construction, sound quality, connections

Weakness:

like everyone else, the remote (but the top half is good)

All I can say is for $300 I'm smiling a little wider through every single song, how could I go wrong? Everything sounds wonderful! too bad the radio is hard to use because of the remote's layout. I'd buy the avr-110 again in a heartbeat.

Strength:

Everything

Weakness:

The damn remote!

This reciever is everything I wanted for my Home theatre. Not only does it give me good sound to my home theatre but it also gives a great experience for Music. I tried out the Sony DB and DE models before buying this and let me tell you then cant even compare. The only flaw I found in this reciever is the remote. It took me more than an hour to to figure out how to use it. Sometimes I have to re-programm it which gets annoying.

Strength:

great sound quality, dts/dd, looks, basiclly everything

Weakness:

none now that i got a new remote

This is an update to my earlier review...I think the unit deserves a full 5 stars now as Harman Kardon is sending me a new remote with working codes. I can't believe the last guy gave it 1 star each. thats just a total moronic review of a truly great amp...If you want a amp thats not too pricy and outperforms basicly any Sony/Pioneer/kenwood/etc basic brand name 100x5 watt amp out there. Thsi little 40x5 H/K does wonders. It sounds truly faboulous.

Harman Kardon is delivering a new remote to my door free of charge and this was my only prob with the unit..

Great service...great sounds and grat looks .....
what more can you want.

Strength:

Premium sound for a low price. Awesome home theater.

Weakness:

Difficult for initial setup (instructions weak).

I did my homework. I listened to lots of receivers over a period of many days. I did not really want the Harmon Kardon - I had never owned one before. Bottom line - the sony receivers have tons of hiss, the yamaha kicks for sound but it also hisses during quiet periods when it is cranked. The harmon kardon is completely silent except for the sound it is supposed to reproduce. Sure we all can mentally filter out hiss, but why bother when you don't have to.

The other reviews cover the problems. In particular I wanted to share that I did have quite a few problems getting is set up. It took me many hours to figure out how to get it to recognize the optical input. However, once I got it up and running, I love it!

My primary audio source is a dish player (SAT) unit. The sound reproduction is fantastic, but I wish there were more dobly digital broadcasts besides PPV and Starz network shows.

Overall this is the best value unit below $500. It is audiophile quality at a enthusiast's price

Looks, build quality, REMOTE, sound, features.

Weakness:

Nothing at all. Buy one.

I've owned Sony receivers for 7 years, and my entire system was built around them save the cd changer. My first DD rec. was the infamous STR-DE915. A year ago, my sub started to hum pretty loudly, and I thought that was due either to the cheap Optimus sub itself or the cheap cable connecting it to the Sony, or, maybe, the Sony itself. Replaced the cable w/ IXOS, no change. I almost replaced the sub, but I found that I could get the AVR110 for $318 shipped. Why not do that and get a different perspective?

Glad I did. When I opened the box it was clear that this is in a differnt class compared to the Sony. Heavy and well built, with a beautiful glass(?) front panel that blows away the run of the mill panels on most systems. Connectors are sturdy and of better quality. Even the way it lights up looks like it cost more than the bill says. Awesome.

Sounds so much better than the Sony. I paid $400 in '97 for that piece. The HK'S SIGNAL is MUCH cleaner. With the Sony I used to hear hums and pops, fuzz in the air, and the sub was loud but not defined. Now, after setting up the HK properly and taking the time to listen to 100 different tracks and 2 movies, it is unreal. Amazing. Soundstage opened up. Bass is defined and more powerful, deeper. The remote in great, I may have gotten the latest revision or something, but I had to look at the manual once and now it runs everything perfectly.

Buy one. Get the 210 if you want 5.1 output, that's the only thing I may wish for a long, long time from now.

40 x 5 is more than I need. As good as I can imagine it can be for $318.
