Strength:

Ease of use, strong output, ample amount of inputs/outputs. Reputable Denon name.

Weakness:

Not Dolby Digital.

This model was purchased (c)1996 for sub $300 as an entry level reciever. I am using it with Mirage 290's main speakers and center, a Mirage Sub and Mirage FRX-1 surrounds. For a Pro-Logic reciever I am generally impressed with it. I have had no major problems with the reciever and would recommend it to anyone looking for an entry level reciever.

Strength:

Value for money

Weakness:

No DTS

Bought this amp from my first months of salary, together with a pair of Quadral Odin's and a Quadral surround-set ;8^)
I was really impressed by the sound atmosphere in my tiny student-room. Especially the video of "Speed", e.g. the elevator-stuff (played on a 6-head Marantz VCR MV653).

Some other Equipment:
- Denon DRS-640 tapedeck (1997)
- Technics SL-P202A CD-player (1990)
- Blaupunkt 55cm TV (1993)

Now that I'm earning a little more, I'm planning to "expand" to sthg. like the Onkyo TX-DS 575 or the Denon AVR 1800.

Strength:

A good budget receiver for surround sound, never given any problems, produces excellent surround sound with my JBL 4800 and Mordaunt Shorts.

Weakness:

A little weak with extreme low end but otherwise a good budget unit, I will soon use it with my PC and then upgrade

A great product for an inexpensive price.
I will use it with my PC and upgrade to a unit that can produce dolby digital for soundtracks now.
And I use a separate amplifier for my music collection.
I am an audiophile and I was amazed by this unit.
I even played my high end music with this unit for a short time.
If you are not an audiophile you will be satisfied with this all around unit.
Especially for movies.

When we got our den redone about 3 years ago, my dad hired a guy to put together a home-theater/stereo package. Of course, my dad being a lax person, trusted this guy's judgement in choosing the right equipment.

He ended up charging us an arm and a leg for this Denon receiver, Denon 5 cd-changer, VCR, and 5 crappy Pinnacle speakers. (In the 2500 dollar range I believe)

Let me tell you something. It is a painful experience to listen to music in this room. I can't stand it...it seriously makes my head hurt! I've tried repositioning the speakers, tweaking setting and adjusting all sorts of knobs without much luck. I don't know if this can be attributed to this Denon receiver or the speakers, etc...

All I know is that we are very dissastisfied with the setup as a whole.
