Strength:

Superb sound quality comparable to high end separates. Advanced features such as the DTS-ES Discreet 6.1 and the D/A converter 8 channels of 24-bit/192khz. Lots of power of 170 watts rms x 7 at 8 ohms.

Weakness:

Very difficult to use remote control. Not a user-friendly at all.

I first ordered the Denon 4800. The sound was great, but a little too bright for my taste. So I sunk in an additional $1400 more to get the Denon 5800. I was not disappointed because this baby sound so great. I used to watch DVD movies in my leisure time, now I'm in more for the sound. My only regret is that there are not too many DVD-audio releases yet.

Strength:

Ample Power. 7 Channel Stereo.

Weakness:

Remote needs work before it can compete with the Pronto.

I guess the power would be an issue if you need to fill a stadium. As for a 18 x 22 room, there is more than enough power...actually, i can hear it upstairs to so, wow, it must be loud enough. I think the unit is a fine item. I am far from displeased. I think that even if you have a smidge of desire to try this puppy out, you should definitely demo it. No matter what you should demo it out, just for the heck of it. If you dont like it dont buy, borrow it or cry about it. The remote needs to be a bit more "pronto" like, so, it will not be replacing my remote.
Plenty of ins and outs on back. Love the backside arrangements, hooking everything up becomes a non issue. It sure beats the heck out of my ole clock radio!

Strength:

Everything,m almost perfect, pure direct circuit, sound quality

Weakness:

um...instruction book and the bulky remote.

I, ve owned many receiver before, starting from onkyo, denon, marantz. the latest amp I bought is the AVc 5800. I was choosing between Sr 14ex and Avc 5800,I got the sr14ex home, play with it for about 10 days, then I got the denon home , the denon just amaze me in HT mode, you get "heap" better soundstage and dynamic than the 14ex. in music mode the denon and 14ex are close, they have their own character of sound. But when you put the pure direct mode on , the avc5800 turn from a av monster to pure high fidility 2 channel amp.the sound became very neutral, if you play good recordind disc, it sound very good , poor recording, sounds bad.then I had ton adjust the position of the spakers , like what Ido whenIwas using the pure 2 channel Accuphase amplifier. I just didn't expect that this amp is so....cool. As a receiver, it is not cheap, but when you count the pure audio factor in, this amp is bargain!!

Strength:

Good value and easy to use

Weakness:

Denon packages it with a piece of garbage remote which Denon formally does not and will not support

I have had the Denon for about 6 months and it sounds great when teamed up with M&K 150 speakers and the M&K 5000 MKII sub for home theater use. I soon will be just using this unit as a preamp and adding a separate amping system (I tested a few and there is a little more ZING) as I move toward separates. I am glad I bought the Denon because it got me started in the home theater world and has provided me great joy.

The only caveat (assuming you are sure you want a receiver) is that Denon packages it with a remote which is next to useless.... and it is unsupported by Denon. The response (or lack of same) by Denon to the remote problems has soured my desire to give them my money and I would not buy this product again, but instead would buy a better supported competing unit. I also doubt the upgrade promise as Denon seems to build a wall between it and its customers (note there is not even an email address on their site). Check out their support and how they handle he Aktis mess before you part with your money.

I do not own this product, but after reading all the reviews i am compelled to comment! I work in the car audio business and sell electronics all day long! I feel that I am fairly intellegent, and understanding. But, I am thoroughly disgusted at the attidude of some of the reviewers. The complaints of product quality are just, and rightfully concerning, but for heavens sake, thay are not done on purpose, or derive from mal intent. Denon is not in the business of making bad equipment on purpose. Unfortunately it just happens. They are bad apples in every bunch. I seriously doubt that any company sits around and says hey lets screw some customers over by making bum products and sell them. I see this all the time at my job. A great deal of deffective equipment becomes deffective during shipping, because the people handling the boxs do not give a damn about what is inside, only that they have a job to do, and by a certain time. I know what some of you are going to say that it should be denon's responsibility to crack down and exsume some quality control, but there is a huge problem with this. The industry does not rely on the manafacturer to deliver the product themselves instead it relies on shipping companies, like AAA cooper, RPS, UPS, FED EX .ETC. I know this is not the sole answer to deffective products, but it is a large problem in the industry.
I truly feel the largest problem is the attitude of the retailer and last but not least the VENDOR !!!!!
The attitude of i have your money already needs to go away. As a consumer i feel that not only have a bought a product, but a piece of the company as well, and as employee of the largest ad agency in the business, "The Consumer", i feel that we need to stand tall and battle all these so called customer service departments who treat you as a caller and not a customer.

Strength:

Very clean power, Lots of A/V growth potential, Build quality awesome.

Weakness:

None, just need to spend a little time to personlize it.

It is worth every penny, period.
It is driving a set of PSB Goldi's, 6i center and some rear satillite sm. klipsch's for know.
First of all the PSB's are 4ohm speakers exept the center 6ohms and they are huge on sucking power. But the 5800 has no problem driving them in movies or music. Everyone that comes over to the house is amazed of the awesome sound.
All I can say is check it out and compare this unit.

Strength:

Tons of clean sound, plenty of digital inputs, set up was a breeze, great remote!

Weakness:

No volume indicator

Choosing this receiver over the leading competitors was difficult. At this price range, there are some great products available. I went with the 5800 because it does absolutely everything well. Plus, Denon has a reputation for exceptional receivers at all price levels. Setup was a piece of cake. The owner's manual is clear and easy to read. In under an hour, I had the Denon up and running. Tweaking the system took much longer of course, but that's part of the fun. Once I had everything set, I played "Hotel California" from the Eagles live CD. My cynical friend was over and his response to the initial test captured my feelings exactly, "Music can't sound any better than that!" I watched a high definition movie last night with the Denon in THX surround mode. At that point, I knew I had made the right choice in purchasing the Denon. The sound was warm but not colored. Again, I have it tweaked to my taste and it makes listening to music and watching movies fun again. Remember the thrill you felt the first time you heard a really great sound system? Well, prepare to be thrilled again! I had read a lot of negative comments about the Atkis remote, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it easy to use and pretty well thought out. Plus, it looks cool as hell on my coffee table. The remote takes a while to learn, but after less than a week, I know where everything is and feel totally comfortable operating my entire system with it. Finally, most importantly, I purchased the Denon at American Theater Systems. They were very professional and knowledgeable. I recommend them to anyone looking for a reputable dealer. I could write more, but with my new receiver, I'm enjoying music I haven't played for years! It's time to get thrilled yet again!

While nit pick over little things. This receiver delivers in music and HT. The built quality is outstanding. If you don't like the remote get a pronto. Let's not over analyze a good thing. Certainly it can be better but so can life. You can go through life critize every because you miss out on the good things. Enjoy it for what it is. And that's a damn awesome receiver.

Strength:

Outstanding 2 channel performance. Superb DAC!

My primary interest is music. I plan to purchase high-end separates for my family room which can run my home theater without compromising music. I purchased the Denon 5800 for my master retreat...probably overkill, but the prices on the internet were so good, and I do plan to purchase good mini-monitors (ie BW Nautilus 805). Having used this receiver for several weeks now, I must report that this is one amazing piece of hi-fi!

The biggest surprise is the 5800's superb DAC. I have a Sony SCD777ES CD player ($2500). Its DAC is the same as that used in Sony's SCD1 CD player ($5000), Stereophile's Component of the Year. Just for fun, I used my CD player as a transport and ran digital signals into the Denon. I had read Michael Fremer's review in Stereophile and Robert Harley's review in Perfect Vision, so I anticipated the Denon's DAC would be good, but I was not expecting it to be better than my CD player's DAC. However, when I started spinning various discs, I was dumbfounded when I quickly realized how much better the music sounded in this configuration. The music became cleaner and naturally warmer (less sterile). Even detail retrieval improved a notch. Believe me, the analog output of the Sony is no slouch. Indeed, the overall sound is so satisfying, I may purchase another one for my main system in the family room. I may add an external 2 channel amp such as the Theta Dreadnaught or Bryston 7BST monoblocks for my L/R speakers.

Even if you are primarily considering high-end separates in the 5-10K range, give this unit a listen. Because its DAC is so good, unless your CD player (or DVD player) is better than mine, the Denon will make it sound better. If you are considering receivers, and music is important to you, I think it's a "no brainer."

Strength:

It's all good. The power, the crispness, the warmth, the enginneering behind it all. Love the remote and do not know what everyone is complaining about.

Weakness:

Non so far. I like everything about it!

Well I have to say I did alot of research and comparisons to other top models and narrowed it down to the Onkyo 989 and the Yamaha RX-V1, but the Denon beat them out in my ears and was just for me. It sounded the best and the fact that Denon (has made it official for a Dolby II upgrade) will support upgrades for it, and this also helped in my decision making.

I just got the thing and I am still learning, so i will update this post as time goes on, but for now I am very pleased with this unit.

As far as the Atkis remote that a lot of people have bashed on this site. Frankly I do not understand what they are talking about???? I have to say that their reviews of the remote made me very weary and intimadated in trying to work it. But this is all hogwash if you ask me. I think the remote is a fine piece of engineering just like the receiver it works.
