Strength:

Powerfull, flexibility(DD.EX/DTS ES, 5/7 Channel stereo,THX), Looks

Weakness:

Remote(are we in the 70`s?) and Manual

I`ve tried many A/V receivers in the past few years, but no one can match Denon AVR 4800(Known as A-10 in Europe). It`s great in surround, and ain`t bad in stereo either. But the remote has to be changed or refined. And I(or WE?)have been heard: The new model and AVR`s successor, 4802 has everything! 7 Channels(7x125W in 8 ohms), DD.EX, DTS ES Discrete 6.1+THX Post Processing, Matrix 6.1 decoding,
DTS neo:6 decoding, Dolby Prologic 2, 24 bit-ALPHA processing in stereo, direct and pure direct modes,
prepared for DVD Audio/SACD, Surround A/B speaker Switching,
multi sone, Adjustable cross-over switching for sub(40, 60,80,100 and 120 freq), nearly all knobs hidden under a trap door and the same remote as 5800!!!!! So if you are looking for a great receiver and haven`t bought 4800, don`t look anymore. Just run`for the 4802!

So long H/K here is the the versatile, powerful, workhorse standard to gauge any receiver in its price range or class!
I've had the unit for awhile now and it is superb. The Direct In is a big plus for me, straight analog for your CD's(analog in). bypass all the processors and you have a nice warm listening experience! The DTS es and Dolby Digital ex sounds awesome with 2 phantom rear speakers which run through my H/K Signature 2.1 amp, DVD's like The Haunting! Discrete channel seperating, build quality make this a must have for any audio enthusiast!! Highly recommaend to anyone wanting to upgrade!!!!

Don't know - never got to try it. :-( Features and reviews looked great tho!

Weakness:

Shut down immediately upon startup, ONLY AFTER FRYING MY RIGHT SPEAKER

I need your help here people - does anyone have a MANAGEMENT contact at Denon Electronics? I've been a loyal Denon fan for over ten years and they're not giving me any respect.

I hooked this receiver up the day I got it and teh second I took the volume knob from -- to -59 I heard a nasty feedback noise, then the amp shut down. Then I heard this sickening sucking noise as my speaker sucked back and smoke came out of it. It's fried. I triple checked the connections (as I always do) before AND after turning it on - nothing awry. I even took pictures right after it happened.

DENON REFUSES TO LISTEN TO ME AT ALL. THEY SAY THAT ALL UNITS ARE QC TESTED AND THERE IS NO WAY THAT THE UNIT COULD FRY MY SPEAKER. THEY OFFERED TO EXCHANGE FOR A NEW RECEIVER OR REFUND MY MONEY ONLY (SOUNDS LIKE AN ADMISSION OF GUILT TO ME - WHY REFUND MY MONEY OR GIVE ME A NEW UNIT IF IT WAS *MY* WIRING JOB THAT CAUSED THE PROBLEM?).

CAN ANYONE HELP ME AT ALL HERE - I'VE NEVER HAD SUCH BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE TREATMENT IN MY LIFE. PLEASE EMAIL ME IF YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS RE: LEGAL RECOURSE OR PERHAPS A CONTACT AT DENON WHO CAN HELP ME.

Thanks very much for you help!

Cheers,
Mark

Build Quality, Power.

Remote Maybe..

Great Product. Build quality very high, Heavy and deep chassis. Numerous hookups.

About the only thing I wish it would have is a bigger display. From 10ft or so it's hard to see.

DTS signal connect somewhat hard to figure out, especially if your DVD-out is not properly set, but after that was hooked up properly everything works fine. Just buy or use a cheap AMP/Rec for the rear and your are in THX.

My setup.

AVR4800
SONY 560 DVD
Polk Audio RT2000 towers.
Polk Audio FX200? Surrounds
Cambridge Sat backs
Sony 32 XBR
Old NAD Rec for Backs.

No front channel yet, needed.

Added a MACK warranty thru crazy eddie for $99 bucks.

Everything I wanted to say has already been said in other reviews. This baby is awesome. Originally I intended to buy the Yamaha RXV 3000 but got this demo unit for $1400 (compare to the RXV 3000 for $2000). Yamaha looks a little better and has 8 chanels (my wife won't let me has another two suround speakers anyway) but it doesn't has THX and only rated at 100W per chanel.

Strength:

Impressive size, lots of 'stuff'

Weakness:

sound quality, tuner

I'll have to be a bit of a dissenter here, but I tried a 4800 at a dealers and at home and was far from satisfied. I was looking to upgrade my Pro-logic receiver with the latest and greatest so I gave the 4800 a shot. At the dealers it sounded pretty bad but dealer demos are not conclusive so I brought it home. Well it was better, but not much. I hooked my Nakamichi DD outs to the Denon to compare decoding quality, and although the Denon was a bit more dynamic, it imparted a heavy, chesty sound to voices and the lower midrange. With all that power on tap, I expected big things, but when it got loud, you knew it. The sound got strained and sort of beat you over the head. In comparison to an ATI 1505, the ATI tackled loud passages effortlessly, with far better control, more detail and more of a feeling of space; less homogenized. I've heard the 3300 at length and couldn't hear much of a difference to justify the cost difference between it and the 4800. The less said about the tuner, the better.

The SR19, to my ears, was far superior with better quality decoding and better quality amplification. It definitely wouldn't go as loud, but the Denon was annoying at higher levels anyway. So much for the 4800s superior DSPs and greater power.

I had high hopes for the 4800 but it didn't deliver. Too bad, it would have saved me alot of money. I ended up going the separates route, a significant improvement in sound quality and flexibility.

Not sure what Home Theater Magazine was on about. Try it first, don't believe what you read (including me).

Strength:

Best All-in-one A/V receiver for the money!

Weakness:

Receiver is deeper in size than most other Home Theater components

I was looking at an upgrade from my Onkyo 656. It came down to the Pioneer Elite and this Denon 4800. There is NO comparison. The Denon sounded tons better compared to the similarly equiped Pioneer Elite VSX-37TX.
The Denon 4800 is THX-Ultra certified, THX Surround EX (Oh my God this is cool!), DTS-ES, DTS, DD5.1...the list goes on. I decided to keep my old Onkyo DD5.1 receiver to drive the 2 back surround speakers and have it looped into the Denon 4800 in order to take advantage of the THX surround EX sound (which adds an extra rear center channel with 2 speakers directly behind the listener). DVD movies are a whole new experience. Component switching is wonderful. Does not degrade my DVDO iScan line doubler or my Progressive Scan Tosh 6200 DVD player video signals.
Sound is about the cleanest, best sound my non-professional ears have heard. excluding high-end seperates.
I've never thought much of most DSPs included on A/V receivers (they don't sound good to me) but this receiver is changing my mind.
This receiver is so versatile. You can assign digital inputs to various components. It is so configurable using the simple setup menu that includes useful graphics, which blinks the speakers that you are affecting with the current setting.
I can't say enough about this receiver. If you have $2000 (You can get it cheaper if you look) to spend, this is the best receiver I can recommend. In fact, don't take my word for it, check out the September 2000 copy of Home Theater Magazine's review on this receiver. I've never seen this magazine give 96 ratings for all areas except for one 93 rating for ANY product they've reviewed lately.
