    Strength:

Surround sound ability Good bass reproduction, especially in surround mode More than adequate in stereo Plenty of inputs and outputs Learning Remote

    Weakness:

No RS-232 Port for furure upgradeability Wouldn't mind some inputs on front panel Understated design, but it performs, and that's what counts

If you need an excellent mid-price receiver that is, even today, loaded, the AVR-3802 is it! While ,as we all know, it's been replaced, you can still find it for a lot less than a 3803.It has the goods, sounding more than commendable in stereo mode, though difficult bass lines can get somewhat muddy, and can be laid back at times. It DOES have EXCELLENT drive and attack in surround mode. The SHARC processor does the job, and does it well. It's surround speaker to speaker panning is quick and precise, which keeps you in the action. It gives a good sense of 'atmosphere'. It has some good setup options too. It allows you to route a pair of speakers into another room if you only have space for a 5.1 setup. It has a good onscreen menu, which almost walks you through the setup process. It does take some getting used to , but it is worth it once you do.Take time and care to read and re-read the manual, and you'll have a blast! It comes with a relatively nice learning remote. It does take some getting used to as well, especially in DVD mode, but you can't really complain, it's a bonus. All in all, especially at the time I purchased it, nothing could compare.

    Strength:

incredible clarity and detail deep tight bass very heavy almost 40 lbs plenty of power

    Weakness:

not the best looking receiver but its what inside that counts anyways

Well this is my fourth receiver now and it will be my last. First started with a Sony which was a total piece of s@#t. Then preceded to the Denon 1802, 2802, and finally the 3802. The 2802 was plenty suffiecient for my living froom which is only 14x15 but i couldnt be satisfied until i had this one wanted the 3803 but at more than 300 more couldnt justify it. About the sound it is excellent... Seems to sound better the louder i play it. I thought i wanted a Yamaha but when i compared this to the Yamaha rxv 2300 there was no comarison to me.. The Denon had greater clarity and much more detail. The bass in the yammy may have been a tad better.. maybe? but overall sound the Denon wins hands down. The major difference between the 2802 and the 3802 was greater clarity and insanely high volumes and deeper bass. I have yet to get all the neccasary speakers for surround but will soon.. Right now my setup is : Denon 3802 Yamaha cdc-506 5 disc changer Klipsch Reference RF-3 PS2 as DVD Monster Z series Bi-wires Monster Interlink 200 Optical wire for CD

    Strength:

many features, more than any other at this price.quality in and out.

    Weakness:

small dispay,Denon please change this! remote is not very well thought out. That's all.

Well it's been about a year and I can tell you this is the best avr ever made for 1k.Features,sound,reliable,first Denon I owned but not the last.It is refreshing to find such a quality product today, for less than a Grand.I have owned HK,ONKYO,MARANTZ,PIONEER,and some others, and they all had some wierd little glitch, but the 3802 is a real piece of work.Denon should be, and probably is very proud of this avr.

    Strength:

-7.1 surround, -astheticaly pleasing design lots of little lights, whoo hooo -crisp clean sound -easy to use remote once you get the hang of it -learning function and macros -looks powerful ,more power ahhh haa ha -back lit remote -auto dts ,dolby switching -two sets of surround left and right outputs ,if i get a bigger place -made in japan -110 watts per channel -all an all a beautiful receiver

    Weakness:

-some things like midnight mode and effect levels need the tv on to change -only half remote backlit -big and heavy had to take the back panel off my stereo stand but its worth it -nit picking here binding posts a little close ,but i cared only once - no dolby digital ex ,it has dolby 6.1 instead ,i dunno it sounds like a rear channel to me -needs more digital outputs if you got 4 dvd players or videogames ive already used 2 of the 3 it should have more though

First of all i must say that this site is very informative and ill use it for future purchases ,i bought this unit on boxing day $1299cdn and its being nothing but great ,a real crisp clean sound with a fairly easy to use remote ,and a 10 minute quick set up(to my existing pioneer prologic.got athena surround speakers on sale too but thats for another review ,way better sounding that the vsx308 receiver ,and a little better that the denon 1803 ,which my brother has ,although he may diagree because his is set up in a 8 x10 room .to me the sound is more clear and each sound is produced with no disortion although ill never crank it,it get a little loud in some scenes but theres a mode thats like midnight mode ,i took 6months to decide on a receiver my choices were pioneer 811s the elites vsx 41, 43tx ,denon 1803 2802 yamaha 1300 ,730,i wanted pioneer because all of my stereo was it ,but thats not a good reason for buying a receiver ,price and features and the fact that the 1803 sounded awesome were them. Was gonna keep it under a grand ,but a $600 savings on a 7.1 reciever i could not pass up ,be it last years model ,the 3803 of cause slightly better but the $2000 price tag is just mental.yamaha did,nt have two rear center channel outputs denon 2802 had and ugly hard to hold remote ,because the wattage wasn,t a big deal to me was gonna go with the 1803 , to my surprise not many places carry pioneer (esp the elites)in conclusion since they don,t make this model anymore,if you got the dough get the 3803 if you dont get the 1803 you wont regret it .if you care my set up is -toshiba 36hfx71 hdtv, it sucks read review -pioneer dv 440 dvd player -pioneer pd m602 cd player -athena speakers point 5 system -20year old sansui speakers which my girlfriend wont part with till they die ,thats ok denon will take care of that heh heh , they sound alright they are just big and old and probably will last another 20 years

    Strength:

The awesome thing is this reciever does a lot and well, short of a THX mode, which I don't care to own. The price was a steal. I hear they are releasing the 3803; I think this unit will be in my home theater for a long time.

    Weakness:

    ZERO

I bought my Denon AVR3802 From an online retailer after readin gthe glowing reviews on this site. I had been impressed by Denon on previous purchases, e.g., an old turntable my wife had owned since college and , more recently, a book shelf unit I bought for my office. The bookshelf unit really impressed me due to the ease of use, quality sound, and a great receiver section w/ a very sensitive FM Tuner. A good tuner is a necessity in the hills of Pennsylvania. So about 6 months before I purchased I made specs checks of anything I could find online. I checked Pioneer, which was the brand I was replacing, and the combo of low THD and a sensitive tuner was not equaled even on their top-of-the-line units. So this kind of checking went on using Sony, Onkyo, Yamaha, Harmon-Kardon, Carver, and Marantz. Statswise, the Marantz and Denon were pretty close. I currently own a an old Marantz 65 W amp that still works and is really clean sounding. When I found that the Marantz was priced ridiculously, I went and bought the Denon. Especially after getting to read the glowing reviews here. Well you guys, this AV receiver can't be beat. I connected this to a set of Paradigm Speakers w/ a Paradigm subwoofer, A SharpVision Projection TV, Toshiba DVD Player, a DirecTV Sony Dish ,and an old stereo RCA VCR. The sound is pristine as the snow that keeps falling on us here in PA. I completely set it up in one night, using the on-screen menus. I had to buy a few more cables, esp the optical cables and SVHS cables that my old system didn't have. I think that the old system had the old Dolby ProLogic and no Dolby Digital. After setting it up, my butt stayed in the basement projection room for a week because I was in heaven. The improvement in the sound was just unreal. Even regular stereo broadcasts in Dolby ProLogic II sound were warm and clean sounding. I like the remote, although no one else in my family can work the damn thing, but they don't ever want to learn anything, so they wallow in ignorance. The Dolby Digital sound with DVD and certain movies braoadcasted on DirecTV are simply awesome. The DSP modes are OK, but I only like Matrix setting, and Mono movie setting for old movies. The only mode I haven't tried yet is DTS digital mode, because I don't have enough speakers. But the DTS NEO:6 mode helps, but its the DTS prologic mode and it sounds good. I am going to install the additional speakers.

    Strength:

Seven power supplies, well built chassis and a lot of metal for heat sinks.

    Weakness:

    None so far

I was surprised with the quality of sound this unit produces. I upgraded from a Denon AVR-1700. The seven separate power supplies truly make the difference in the quality of sound and power to your speakers/Sub. I strongly recommend this product.

    Strength:

Denon Built!!! Need I say anymore....

    Weakness:

After 7 months of watching movies almost every night, sometimes two. NONE!

Yes it's true! If your running a nice set of Speakers with this unit, you will hear things you've never heard before. Especially in DTS-es or DD-ex. I am taking advantage of all 7 channels with Infinity IL40's for mains, IL36c center, Klipsch RS-3II (sides) and IL10's for my rears. Infinity IL120s Sub. I know some of you guys have the big boys like B&W, Wilson Grand Slamms (which if you do, you paid to much!)ect.. But man! What a BAD ASS RECEIVER!! 110 watts of high current power pumped into 7 Speakers. My home theater will BLOW YOU AWAY!! If you like it louder than that or if the sound quality isnt good enough for you? Your from another planet!

    I purchased the 3802 on ubid as a factory refurbished unit, for a substantial cost reduction. this replaced my old yamaha dolby pro-logic reveiver purchased around 1992. everything worked great until i hooked up the rear speakers (not the side A or side B set of speakers, but the rear speakers). i had bostons all around, except for the rears, and just hooked up some old bose until i could order an appropriate pair of bostons for the rear. when i did the speaker level calibration, i got a superloud level from the rear speakers. i thought it was because of the differences in speaker efficiency, so finally did get some bostons for the rear, and hooked those up. same thing. then i realized i could not adjust the rear speaker level via the on-screen display the way i could with the other channels, and the way i was supposed to. the bar graph would move up and down, but the actual volume level coming from the rears was horrendously loud, and would not adjust. i contacted ubid, they sent out another (refurb'ed) unit, i sent the bad one back. got the 2nd unit, tested the rear channel, worked perfectly. hooked up all the speakers, including my hsu research tn1220 and 500w amp. no sound out of the sub. tested it on my old receiver, still worked fine (as it did on the 1st denon i got from ubid). contacted ubid, they stated i could try for door number 3 or just get a refund, i opted for the refund. what's up with the alleged refurb'ed units from ubid? or is it denon's fault? are they not fixing the problems to begin with? i checked for service shops in my area, closest one was lexington or indianapolis, essentially at least one hour away for a receiver that i'd just plunked $600 for. i did consider getting it serviced, but ubid said it needed to go to a service place in new york, where i'd have to mail it, the rep guessed it would be around $30 shipping. so the bad luck with the refurb'ed units, combined with lack of availability for authorized service, makes denon a bad call for me at this point. power was good, menu was decent, i didn't have any serious problems with the remote, other than the backlight feature is essentially useless, as it lights up, but you can't read what any of the buttons say. so in dark light, you essentially get a nice remote where you can see a bunch of buttons. i guess eventually you memorize the important ones, and just need to see where they are. i'll likely shop around for NEW denon, or more likely onkyo, my first real stereo receiver owned. other equipment: boston a-100 fronts; boston 525v center; boston a-60 sides; boston cr6 rears; hsu research tn1220 sub with 500w amp; sony dvd player; panasonic dvd recorder with 40 gig HD;
