Strength:

ample power, made in Japan, built quality, DTS-ES,
Great bang for your buck

Weakness:

remote not completely back-lit, only one coaxiial input

Hats off to Denon. After auditioning several products around US 1000 range, I have come to these conclusions: 1. Yamaha is only good for those who love DSP; Personally I don't think any serious music-lover or audiophile can put up with those flashy DSP. Gives me a headache after prolonged listening. Yammy comes up short in power and musicaliy. 2. Marantz sounds great in two-channel stereo with uncanny musicality, but still a tad weak-sounding. 3. Barring SR-7000, Denon AVR-3801 is the only Made-in-Japan receiver on the market, which ensures quality when compared with AVR-3300 (made in Korea), or Malaysian-made Yamaha and Sony.

DTS-ES is another strong suit for AVR-3801, which it inherits from the flagship AVC-A1 SE(AVR-5800 for US users). You have to check it out to believe it!!! The 32-bit Analog Device DA chip also does a wonderful job on incoming digital source from my DVD. I would sincerely recommend AVR-3801 to anyone interested in building a solid home theater.
PS. My AVR-3801 is the Asian version, which is a nice and shiny champaign-colored babe.

Remote Control

The Denon AVR3801 have a nice sound, a great bass and transparent trebles. DTS Neo is very nice to listen the old VHS without lost sound quality in surround speakers.
The 105 watts per channel are suficient to small and mid-size rooms.

Looks great. Everything on board you need for 6.1

Weakness:

Manual, remotecontrol, quality!?

I bougth the AVR3801 after reading a test in a german hifi-magacine. After unpackaging the receiver I tried to setup it for 5 hors without getting it to work. The manual was not helpfull because it discribed nearly everything you don´t want to know but the errorlist is verry poor! I reseted the receiver and the remote several times (it´s an art like strg-alt-del-ent-spiwelkns,mcx....:-))an on the end of the day I phoned my dealer (I´m a lucky man because I bougth it at my local dealer and not over the internet) and he tried to bring it to life with me. Finally he told me that this one is the one in a million that is broken. Now I have a new one and it sound great, realy! Be shure to buy it at your local dealer (to check quality and sound)

THE REMOTE IS FAR BETTER THAN THE PREVIOUS MODELS.
THE ON SCREEN DISPLAY IS GREAT

Weakness:

MIDRANGE AND LOW BASS SEEM A LITTLE WEAK.. STILL PLAYING WITH IT.

I AM A CUSTOM A/V INSTALLER. I HAVE INSTALLED HUNDREDS OF
DENON RECEIVERS..MY FAVORITE FOR THE MONEY HAS ALWAY'S BEEN THE AVR 2800 AND NOW THE 2801. SO WHEN THE 3801 WAS AVAILABLE, I GOT ONE FOR THE HOLIDAY'S. SO FAR I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT, EXCEPT FOR 2 PROBLEMS THAT I HOPE SOMEONE OUT THERE CAN HELP ME...

PROBLEM 1. LACK OF MIDRANGE AND BASS OUT OF THE MAIN AND CENTER SPKRS. I HAVE PLAYED WITH THE BASS MGMT BUT NOTHING HELPS..

PROBLEM 2. THIS IS MY MAIN PROBLEM. MY SUBWOOFER HAS AN AUTO SENSING INPUT FOR TURNING ON AND OFF. I FIND THE SUB
CONSTANTLY TURNING OFF DURING SOFT PARTS (ESPECIALLY IF THE VOLUME IS LOW) AND WHEN A LFE HITS THE SUB TURNS ON. BEFORE I GO OUT AND GET A NEW SUBWOOFER WITH A CONSTANT ON..
I AM HOPEFULL SOMEONE OUT THERE MIGHT BE ABLE TO HELP ME
SOLVE MY PROBLEM'S BECAUSE OTHER THAN THESE TWO GLITCHES
I LOVE MY 3801.. PS. BECAUSE I AM NOT USING THE REAR SPKRS
I USE THAT AMP FOR MY WHOLE HOUSE THROUGH A SPKR SELECTOR.

IF YOU PRICE OUT A STRAIGHT 100WATT AMP OF GOOD QUALITY. THIS RECEIVER IS A GREAT BUY....

IF I CAN SOLVE MY SUBWOOFER PROBLEM I WILL GIVE THIS UNIT A 5 STAR RATING...
THANK YOU..

Strength:

This is for the 3802...Too numerous to count

Weakness:

On the unit, virtually none that matter (just one or two nitpicky things)
In the manual, EVERYTHING!

This is for the 3802...

In response to the last review...

Andre,

You set the receiver up incorrectly. I know because I did the same thing myself. Consult the (horrible) manual again and make sure that you follow the instructions carefully.

"ps: I am using component cables between dvd/tv and normal rca cables from tv/receiver."

It sounds like you are not connecting the "loop." Two things in order to get the OSD to work; the receiver must be at the center of the loop and the connection from the source to the receiver must be the same as the connection from the receiver to the monitor. Try this (using a DVD player as an example): if you go "out" from the DVD player using S-video cable #1 to the "in" on the receiver, then you must also use an S-video cable (#2)connection from the receiver to your monitor...you can't go S-video "in" to the receiver then RCA "out" to your monitor...it won't work.

If this doesn't work then perhaps you have a defective unit. I'd call the store for help first. If you got it online, then call Denon support.

Weakness:

??????????????

I/m writing this review to qualify some of the earlier erroneous ones.

1) One reviewer said you can't adjust speakers with out test tones. Thats just not true. All you do is hit the receiver button at the top of the remote, then hit the shift/enter key (in the middle) and it will cycle through the different speakers outputs for the apporpiate setting.

2)Another reviewer said this unit doesn't have enough power. Power is subjective. I'm curious to know what's his speakers sensitivity ratings and OHM performance. My speakers are in a 20'x15'x7' room. Monday, I turned my 3801 to 00 and I got a C slow meter on my SPL meter of 101,2 and 103 db. I still 18 more clicks to go (max is -18). It was not audibly distorting at 00db either. That was loud enough for me I just left it alone.

3) Another gentleman said you can't adjust the tone without the OSD. That's not true either. All you got to do is hit tone on the receiver and then dial in you adjustments. This does not require a television. Secondly, I'm almost positive you can do it on the remote, because I read that somewhere in the manual.

4) There was one more that I can't remember. OH Well.

Before people write reviews and lower a products rating, they should be more comprehensive in their approach.

All of the people I mentioned liked the product, but their ratings of 3-4 for (what they mentioned as weaknesses) brought the whole product rating down for untrue stuff.

I will give it 5 stars to help make up for the others.

Clean, neutral sound that doesn't seem to distort. DTS ES, 5 channel stereo, Direct mode excellent.

Weakness:

????

I already have a review on this product, but I wanted to respond to a couple of reviewers who obviously didn't read their manual or fool around with the unit long enough.

These reviewer (though they liked the unit)gave it 3-4 stars and then complained about various erroneous? things.

1)One reviewer said you can't adjust the speakers output levels with out the test tones. That's not true. All you have to do is press the receiver buttom at the top of the remote, and then press the enter/shift button. That will cycle through the output levels of the different speakers in the appropiate sound mode.

2) One reviewer said "not enough power". Obviously that' a subjective statement. Without getting into specs etc. What is the sensitivity and ohms of this guys speakers. MY speakers are only 87db at mostly under 5ohms. Yesterday, while playing a CD (on c weighting slow on the DB meter) I got up to 101,2,and 103 db at the 00 volume level. I still had the maximum 18 clicks to go. I don't know if I could of, but I know that their was no audible distortion at the 00 103db. level at the listening position (10ft away in my 2x15x7'room). That's loud and powerful to me. Later I played the unit at -17- -10db for hours with out any heating or power problems.

3)One reviewer said you can't adjust tone controls with out the OSD. THat's not true You can hit tone on the reciever and then turn the dial to adjust. The TV doe not need to be on. I'm almost sure you can do this on the remote as well, cause I read about it in the manual.

There was one more which I can't remember. Oh well I will give it 5 stars to help balance the untrue statements of below.
