Strength:

- Excellent sound quality and power - Impressive surround decoding - 7.1 ready on preamp output - Component output switching (not sure for HDTV)

Weakness:

- No volume indicator on screen display - Manual is difficult to understand, nothing but confusing - System setup is available on screen only (not on a/v receiver display) - No external connection to Karoke mixer or equalizer - No front A/V connection

I did a few weeks of research, including comments on reviews and reliability. I finally narrow down to Denon. So far, I am very happy with my decision. It has 6.1 surround decoding capability; sound is free distortion and very clear and warm; very good make and excellent quality. Power is plenty enough for most home theater. It is a little pricy but I paid what I got. Prologic II is worth to mention, a big step forward from old prologic. You got a full range of sound from the surround speakers (But other simulated DSP are not impressed). The only bad design is there is no individual prologic setting for individual input source; in other words, you have a master prologic setup only. DTS decoding on music video is amazing (on The Eagles "when Hell Freezes" DVD with DTS sound), it just brings me to a different world of music. Sound from each musical instrument has good separation and image. Dynamic frequency range is very wide, getting you a feeling of concert hall effect. I have never heard anything like that at home. I don't understand why there are so many complaints about the remote control. I found the remote is easy to use and has a good layout. If those people use other universal remote controls, they would have more complaints about the complexity. I personally have troubles to adjust the volume control. Since the receiver is 8 feet away from the listensing position, I need a binocular to see the exact volume setting on the tiny display. Also Denon doen't expect their customers to use external karoke mixer or equalizer. I found my mixer useless with my receiver. I understand most of people having troubles to understand the manual. As I am an electronic technican, I am confused too even I have a technical background. Sometimes, I have to read 3 to 4 times to get their ideas.

Strength:

Seperation, Sound Quality, Looks, Ease of use one you get used to it. The system allows many intricate changes to it for a sub $1000 reciever.

Weakness:

For the price nothing. It could use more power, but what couldn't without paying an arm and a leg. I think the top model is only 120 watts.

I moved up from a Technics AX6 with it's DD/DTS Decoder and nothing can make me happier to have moved to a REAL audio product. It has every format at the moment and is upgradable to 7.1 sound and also has pre-outs on every channel. The sound is distortion free and I love every minute of listening to it. I wouldn't mind having the 3802 for the extra headroom, but I've never had to blast it any louder anyways, but hey....I'm not putting the Denon down, just being greedy.

Strength:

Good sound Good Power Easy to set up

Weakness:

Not the most infomrative display Volume light would be good Manual lacking Remote is too big and ugly: embarrasing to show guests.

Switched to the Denon after having a Sony DA50ES stolen. Spent a lot of time in audio listening rooms comparing systems. Mainly came down to either a Marantz or Denon in the price range. The Marantz was slightly cheaper, but didn't have the same range of features. Also the Denon was more consistent from shop to shop. The speakers make the most difference. Unless you have good speakers, one amp is similar to another. I am using some Polk Q55.2's, which seem to do a nice job for medium size. Although I could do with a sub for movies. Denon looks ok as receivers go; they are all pretty ugly really. The Sonys look better. Found the Denon to be easy to set up and get going, however not as easy or flexible as Sony. Sound is damn fine, a lot smoother and more detailed than the Sony. Price was $2000NZ, $900US Remote seems pretty useful, although ugly. The manual has some draw-backs. Difficult to understand some details around different Dolby systems etc. Display is OK, not as intuitive as the Sony. Basically this is a excellent sounding amp, with plenty of power. Detailing of movies is powerful and accurate. Much beeter than the Sony. It has a good range of features, but is not as easy to use or as intuitive as Sony.

Strength:

diplomatically high power and an impressive array of i/ps and o/ps for future use and flexibility, decent poer, prologic2,dtsEs and learning remote

Weakness:

I feel a/v recievers shud come with an inbuilt amplifier for the subwoofer(Is there a practical difficulty in incorporating this). And, why on earth shud the prices so high in INDIA????real pity!!

I did a lot of research(about 3 months)on the website and narrowed my search to denon avr2802,yamaha 520,620 and sony strdb1070. Ultimately picked up the Denon as sony was not reliable in the world of recievers according to many.was my choice right? Summary?? wait a min...guys dont u c that we have to pay so much for a denon out here in india(actually the legal local denon outlet lists the denon avr 2802 at a phenomenal 1800$ !!!).That really sucks man!!!what is the logic? I think i need lots of clarifications about the denon's array of i/ps and o/ps but anyway, since my Denon 2802 is about a month old, i think i can give preliminary results of my investigations on my Denon's performance. First of all, this is definately not an amazing amp in the mind blowing sense. Though the noise is significantly less, i definately feel the need for a midrange control(The mids seems to dominate at high volumes),But that's what movies demand(that may be the explanation). But sony strdb1070 has this for all the channels!!!!why cant denon have it man??? Power seems to be clean and powerful and i suppose i need powerful speakers to handle the big boy's amps!! The aesthetic feel is really simple(it is good) and the features are well organised and well controlled both at the system and at the remote level. Features wise, Prologic2 made for some good listening and DTSNEO also fared well. For ordinary stereo playbacks the STEREO setting was doin abetter job than the rest. The rest of the modes(jazz, rock are as good as nothing) Radio is ordinary and nothin to rave about. The learning remote is a good and valuable feature and i think it will serve me well to control my components in the basic sense. Remote is alright!!though looks like a big geometry box(it reminds me of my school days). So far, i am satisfied with my investment but time will tell whether it is a worthy one or not. I have some clarifiactions with the no of inputs and outputs given. somebody come forward and offer to help me out(u can mail me and i will put my questions). That wuld be of real help. bye fellas... keep rocking the world....

Strength:

Easy to use. My girl friend learned how to use the receiver and the remote in a few minutes. Easy setup. Didn't need to read the complete manual. Only a few pages. User friendly remote. Can use my other denon components now with one remote. Don't understand why others don't like the remote. The remote is clearly divided into several sections, each with their own distinctive color. That's why it's so easy to use, for me and my girl friend. Speakers terminals: it's very easy to connect the speakers cords to the receiver.

Weakness:

no big ones so far

A very good surround receiver, good quality for stereo and dolby surround/dts signals.

Strength:

Solid name reputation. Does everything expected and more. The AVR-2802 is only a mid-range model that extends into the 5000-series but for the price it is all I could ask for.

Weakness:

I would hardly hold it as a negative but the owners manual could use a bit more detailed explanations.

I bought the Denon AVR2802 to enhance my home-theater and DVD playback and to replace my older Denon PMA-757 amp. The sound quality it produces from my DVD movies is unbelievable, but what impresses me most is what this unit does with my 40-year old collection of 33 1/3 records. I still have some components of my older hi-fi system: My Fischer XP-7 main speakers (now accompanied by my new Wharfedale Emerald 97's, and my Elac Miracord turntable which refuses to act it's age. I have never before in my life heard the quality of sound that I am getting today.

Similar Products Used:

Cannot begin to compare it to previously used components but I still have my Fischer 500C and the above mentioned Denon amp.

Strength:

Power, clarity, realitive ease of use, full set of inputs and outputs.

Weakness:

Not THX certified but not much is in this price range.

I like this receiver. I returned the Onkyo TXSR600 to upgrade to this one. A good decision since it only cost $57 more to do so by buying online. Very powerful, at least in my smallish room. I drive all Polk Audio speakers (RT600i, CS400i, RT15) with it with the exception of the sub woofer which is a 10" DCM. As with most newer AV receivers it took a few minutes to figure out all the settings required to get the most out of it. I finally managed to get it to go into DTS which was really more of a function of getting the settings right on the DVD player. Combined with my 51" Sony HDTV widescreen I now have a very nice mid range theater system. I wouldn't spend any more than I have unless I could build a dedicated room. At fair retail of $799 maybe a bit pricey but at the lower online prices under $600 probably a bargain

Remote Manual

This was my fourth receiver in less than a year. No, did not win a lottery or go nuts with money .. the earlier ones just gave up on me. my first three were Marantz 5200, 5200 and 6200 and all of them .. well .. lets put it in this way .. if Boening incorporated the same quality that Marantz does .. world's population will be cut by half in matter of months. Must say that the dealer was extremely patient with my situation and helped me out in every possible way. Coming back to the Denon, it 's hell of a system. The sound will truly blow your mind. From Bob Dylan to Dave Brubeck everything finds a new meaning with the sound quality. The only improvements could be : the remote could be more user friendly and the manual .. god knows who translated the manual from the original .. his / her command on English is little better than my Esperanto ..

Strength:

detailed sound specification list

Weakness:

none

Movie soundtracks will blow you away. Even movies you've seen many times will reveal details you didn't notice before. The bass on "the pod race"-Phantom Menace is unbelievable. (Do I really need a separate Sub?) Using the Dolby Digital EX mode you clearly hear a Tuscan Raider shooting from the rear middle speaker. Bullets in "The Matrix" and "Saving Private Ryan" will sound as if they are flying straight thru or just past you. "Apocalypse Now" is a delight with sounds of helicopters that circle your viewing room with realism. For music I do not have a dedicated CD player yet, so cannot give a fair review, but using my (budget) dvd player for CD audio, I am not disappointed. Switch to The Eagles "when Hell Freezes" DVD with DTS sound, and you will be very impressed with the feel that you are at the concert. Every instrument is heard clearly and separation is fantastic. The overall sound of the system is warm and laid back, but has a great feel of quality to it. The remote is worth a mention because you can program all your other separates remote codes into it, eliminating up to 7 remotes. From all your equipment on standby you can set up, for example, the switching on of your TV, your DVD and the receiver all to the right settings with the press of 2 buttons.

Excellent surround decoding. Good feature set for this price class.

Weakness:

Remote kinda sucks. Manual not all that informative. Amp section is weak.

Overall this a good receiver with excellent surround decoding. The amp section is kind of weak but i use an outboard amp with it now. This receiver is a good bargain and can be found online for just over $500. I use this unit in my bedroom. The Onkyo TXDS 797 is in my main HT.
