Strength:

Ease of use; S-video connections; DD and DTS

Weakness:

Remote is not backlit and has small buttons; Definitely need to use a universal remote as a replacement

I needed a receiver for a bedroom system which would have svideo connections (for video switching) and would allow me to add a dvd player at a later date. This receiver sounds great and has plenty of power in a smaller room even though it is rated at 60 watts. It is very easy to set up and use. Denon has revised its manual since I purchased a 3200 with a horrid manual.

I use the 1601 primarily to watch cable and to view svhs tapes which I recorded off of cable. I have also used it to listed to audio cds, which sound great. I particularly like the 5 Channel Stereo option, which allows you to hear stereo from all 5 channels. I have found this option particularly useful when watching tv - if there is not enough action to warrant DPL.

There are binding posts for the mains and center speakers but only spring clips for the surrounds.

I have not yet hooked up a dvd player to test Dolby Digital and DTS but I am sure it will be good.

The remote stinks - not backlit - which is a dealbreaker for me. I use a universal remote and the Denon's codes were readily available.

All in all, this is a terrific budget receiver.
