if you are interested in this product, the avr-50 derivative model is no longer available at netmarket...but they had some killer Onkyo deals...txsv343 with dolby pro-logic for $139!
its www.netmarket.com, and i think you can join as a trial member for only a little money, but im not sure...

they have a lot of stuff though...

In June I was in the market for a new audio system. After looking around my receiver choice was limited to the Denon AVR 1400 and the Marantz SR480. At that time it was nearly impossible to find anything else that was DTS or AC3 ready and also have equal power to all five channels. Yamaha and Onkyo had squat with equal power. In the end I chose the Denon because it had more power and a few options that I liked, ie. 5 channel stereo etc. Over the last few months I have been very pleased with my decision. Power is more than adequate and clarity is very good. The receiver is bi-wired to my Paradigm Monitor 7's (best speaker in the price range) and the cd is denon's 350 with the alpha processor. If you can afford the extra $100 over the Marantz I highly recommend this unit. Great, upgradable starter receiver!

You shouldn't be using this review forum as a chat board. You have filled up 3 of the 8 reviews with your conversation. This doesn't contribute to the overall body of knowledge about this product. Regarding Marty from Evanston's lengthy review, he said that the Denon sounded markedly better and smoother than the equivalent Yamaha with certain Polk speakers. Denon electronics have a more smooth or rounded-off sound than Yamaha. Yamaha is well known for their clarity and definition. Many Yamaha receivers sound remarkably clear and defined with better speakers, but they sound harsh or shrill with poorer speakers. Conversely, Denon components almost always sound better with cheaper speakers because they mask the speaker's faults. It is incredibly important to match specific receivers with specific speakers.

So, got a new job, finally making some decent cash. I thought it was time to get decent system that played excellent music and powerful to modest surround sound. Now, my most desired feature was the 5 channel stereo. DENON delivered big time. I mean you feel engulfed in this sound. Every company should offer such a feature. The surround sound with my direct tv is ASSOME. While this receiver does not have Dolby Digital, as if it really matters, the ProLogic suits my everday entertaining myself and guess purposes. PRICE: $349.00 on sale at Good Guy. Listen to this receiver in the store if you are trying to decide. DENON proves its record with this one. The display is easy, enough imputs to run a CONCERT, however the remote control is reall cumbersome. I could do without. But otherwise.........excellent PRODUCT.

I got this receiver about eight months ago, kind of a fluke. I bid$125 at bid.com for a lower line Denon receiver, they sent the
AVR-1400 instead. Maybe they were out of stock, gave me an upgrade
instead? Who knows, even the sun shines on a dogs rear sometimes.
I really like this receiver, quality looks, feel, and sound. Couldn't
beat the price with a stick. Siskel & Ebert (maybe just Ebert) give
it a "Thumbs Up"!!!

I just bought the AVR-1400 the other day for a bargain (Cdn.) $499.95. It lists here for $799.95. I am very happy with my purchase, as are many other people from what I see in the past reviews. I run the surrounds, and my main left & speakers with the Denon's built in amps. I connected the sub & centre pre-outs to my ADCOM GFA-545II. You may wonder why I am using the ADCOM for LFE & CTR duty. Well, to my ears with the DENON set at 12 o'clock (flat), the sound quality of the Denon's internal amps I felt is equal in timbre and smoothness when compared to my trusty ADCOM set-up.
Minor quibbles: Phono stage (I am a lover of the medium)is a little noisier than my ADCOM GFP-345 (now retired as an anti-vibration device for my SONY deck & JVC CD player!). Wished that the AVR-1400 had a 80Hz filtered sub-output (my Sub is Passive). The remote sucks (I quickly programmed my One-For-All remote)

When watching (and listening, feeling) AC-3 Dolby Digital DVD's, I was totally impressed!!!! Dolby Pro Logic Decoding is the cleanest I have yet to hear (thanks in part to DDSC-A). The different surround modes are fun to play with on some of my favourite recordings. But for serious listening I prefer flat L, R, & SUB.

Check out JC's post regarding the Denon 2400. Is this guy a Yamaha dealer or something? It looks like he's just looking for excuses to keep Denon off the Hall of Fame. BTW, the Denon really does deserve 5 stars so I don't see how JC could be that upset by someone double-posting. Listen before you leap. 5 stars for the 1400 and 4 to JC (somebody needs to knock him upside the head)... maybe then he'll be able to hear those stars (and the bells ringing in his ears).

Did a direct comparison between the Denon and the Yamaha RXV 592 (same price). The Denon is so much better that I was absolutely amazed. At first, I took home the Yamaha b/c I had read nice things about it. But, I found that the DSP settings sound very mechanical, or "tinny." I took it back to the store and listned to the Denon. No comparison. Denon is much more natural and crisp. The only thing lacking is on the low-end power. I have to turn the bass levels way up to get enough punch.

Although I wasn't planning on buying a receiver (I hardly ever listen to radio), I wanted a DPL amp for about $500/$600 and I must say: it's a great bang for the buck.
Sounds great for movies.
