Strength:

Fantastic with the 2.10c upgrade,

Weakness:

none now

When I got this unit 1 1/2 years ago it had 1.10c, I upgraded to 1.18c over the net. Now I bought the upgrade 2.01c with the new remote, it sounds fantastic, I can hear sounds that I missed with the B&K Ref20. This unit sounds like units costing 3 times the price. It was better then the Denon's, much better then the B&K & somewhat better then the Parasound. This turned out to be the best value & performance going. Was looking into a Lexicon DC1 demo but with this upgrade I am staying with the Sony. Unbelievable how I can hear things like keys dropping etc. The new remote is fantastic.

Remote sucks

I have a question before I call Sony. I have upgraded to the new version 2.01 about 8 month ago from someone who was kind enough to share this software online. I just ran a sound test on all 6 speakers and I notice that when the left/right surround speakers are being tested there is a small leakage of sound coming from the Sub woofer. Every time the test tone hits the left or right back speaker the Sub gives out a slight hum and it should not be active at all untill the test tone hits the Sub. I would ask for all who have the latest version to test this on there system and reply to this problem. The Sub is dead silent when the test tone is hiting the 2 front speakers and the center speaker ( Thats the way it should be ), it only seems to be leaking during the back speaker test. This should not happen and this will result in false seperation during a DTS or Dolby movie. I will call Sony, maybe I installed a bad copy of the 2.01 version or just maybe all of us have not been paying attention to this problem. If you decide to try this test on your system them please turn the sub volume up so you can be able to detect this Bug without problems. Thank You.

Strength:

Easy to use (high WAF), numerous surround modes and input options

Weakness:

Remote, gets very hot invigorous use, high noise floor- even with ver. 2.01 upgrade

The TA-E9000ES has proven to be a reliable performer for movies and music for two years. About nine months ago I added a TA-P9000ES multichannel analog preamp. I have since purchased a Toshiba SD-9200 DVD-audio player and a SONY SACD changer (775). The sound quality with these two players through the P9000 is superb. While the E9000ES is very adequate with two channel sources, all incoming data is digitized. The P9000 will switch and pass 5.1 analog signals. The results with the Toshiba have been particularly impressive. I've had to rethink my position on DVD-audio. At least with this combination of equipment (and in comparison to the SONY 775 changer) the results have been most impressive.

When the P9000ES becomes available later this fall I highly recommend it. It is a very cost effective addition to any pre-pro lacking 5.1 pass-throughs. It is a great sounding unit, period. And it is a tremendous enhancement to the TA-E9000. With this combination there is no need to upgrade to the newer generation of preamps, including the upcoming SONY TA-E10ES. There simply isn't enough movie software to justify it. Now if SONY would just make a Dolby Pro Logoc II firmware upgrade available for the TA-E9000ES....

Strength:

Best sounding A/V Processor around.

Weakness:

Lack of 7.1, although TBH, do you really need it?

O.K, here is the deal w/ V2.5.

It was released as a "localised" kit, for the Japanese market. It is roughly 6 months newer than V2.01, and adds AAC decoding ( which is irrelevant to most E9000ES users )

However, it is likely also to have an improved Virtual Matrix 6.1 mode, and sound quality better than V2.01. Not the same leap as V1.01A to V1.10C, or V1.18 to V2.01, more like V1.10C -> V1.18.

Most people who have the "A" kit wouldn't want to pay for the "B" kit anyway.

I propose to get the firmware publically released, not in kit form, but as a file from a Sony website, accessible to "A" kit owners.

However to DO This I'm going to need the "kit" myself, so I can legitimally send the V2.5 firmware to Sony U.S, U.K etc ( as I did with V2.01 ).

I helped get V2.01 released, after I got the "A" kit from Japan, and I intend to try to help E9000ES owners get V2.5

I'm going to need help though, so if ANYONE in asia is reading this, I'd like to get hold of the "B" kit ASAP. I'll pay for the kit + shipping, by whatever means suit you.

Help me, help you

Strength:

Sound and Decoding quality, particuarly using V2.x firmware, Virtual Matrix 6.1, Analog Bypass stage of great quality available w/ addition of P9000ES

Weakness:

Captive Power cable, Lack of Pro-Logic 2 as of yet

Just thought, in light of the previous review, that I had better provide the link to the E9000ES forum again where you can find the E9000ES Setup "tips" ( topmost post of forum ) as well as information on V2.5, and be able to post any questions regarding the E9000ES or it's use in a general-system context.

If you own a E9000ES and haven't been to the forum, then I doubt you are making the most of what you have!

Strength:

Build, currently found at great closeout prices

Weakness:

2 Channel is rather hollow sounding with echoing tendancies
Remote

Given the price I paid, I am happy. Had I paid over $1,000, I too, like this units previous owner, would have returned it.

The remote is horrid, but anyone in seperates should already own a universal learner they are comfortable with.

The other units I auditioned prior to this cannot match the HT performance. Sony engineers really did a great job on multichannel decoding. The 2.01 Firmware has really lowered the noisefloor which was a thorn in this unit previously.

2 channel music, frankly, sucks. Even the Denon, but especially the Marantz smack this unit silly. Granted the ambients are minimal, and the sound is quite neutral, but there is present quite a bit of echoing and hollowness to this unit. I run an Outlaw amp and ACI Sapphire III mains so I am sure the problem is the Sony. I have also tweaked this unit to my wits end (see link below).

So ...
If you are an HT enthusiast and wanting to get into seperates, take the plunge! Buy this thing while its still easily found.

If you listen to music much at all though, there are better consumer level receivers and definitely preamps that dollar for dollar will outperform this unit.

I will be selling mine on ebay very soon.

I would like to thank the people on the Sony TAE9000ES forum. They are very helpful and informed. Visit them at: http://pub7.ezboard.com/faussiedvdandhtforumsonytae9000esinformationforum if you havent already!

Strength:

Adjustability, perceived construction(seems good). Remote.

Weakness:

directivity of remote, has to be aimed at or directly in front of unit. A little noisy on music only, lacks real dynamic contrast on non-surround modes, again music only. Only one set of main pre-outs, hard to bi-amp my speakers.

This unit does get pretty hot. It looks really well made. I like the ability to change all parameters from where I listen. The unit I bought new, had no remote in the box. What kind of quality control is that? I had to wait a week to get a new remote. I think this unit has just the right amount of inputs, not too many, not too few. This is my first DTS/DD decoder. I have had much stereo equipment, but strayed away from surround. I like movies quite abit with this amp and the sub I have. I like the 2 channel mode and the auto format mode. I have this system with the Sony as the controller, and another complete system just for music. I recommend this amp to anyone who really enjoys Home Theater, and has good compnents to go with it.

I'M ONE OF THE FEW WHO GOT THIS PRODUCT AS IT WAS JUST AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC. AFTER EXACTLY SEVEN (7) DAYS, YES 7 DAYS, OF USING THE REMOTE CONTROL, IT WENT DEAD. WOW! GOT NEW SETS OF BATTERIES WHICH AT FIRST DIDN'T MAKE SENSE SINCE THE BATTERIES THAT CAME WITH IT LOOKED BRAND NEW TO ME. I CALLED THE STORE I GOT IT FROM BUT THEY TOO WERE DUMBFOUNDED BY THIS. SONY WROTE ON THE MANUAL THAT IN ORDER TO SAVE BATTERY LIFE TURN OFF THE BACKLIGHT OF THE LCD SCREEN WHEN NECCESSARY. HOW? EVEN ON DAY TIME YOU CAN FAINTLY SEE THE DISPLAY WITHOUT TRUNING THE BACKLIGHT ON. ADJUSTING THE CONTRAST DID'NT HELP THAT MUCH EITHER. OVERALL THE SOUND WAS EXCELLENT.DTS PROCCESSING WAS SWEET AS THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME AFTER I GOT MY POLK SRT'S TO LISTEN TO JURASIC PARK IN DTS LD. THE DSP SETTINGS WERE BETTER THAN WHAT YAMAHA BOAST ON THEIR DSP-A1. CONNECTIONS AT THE BACK WERE VERY GENEROUS AND LAYOUT WAS CLEVERLY THOUGHT.HOWEVER EQ PARAMETERS SETINGS CAN BE CONFUSING TO THE UNTRAINED EAR AND CAN ONLY MESS THE SOUND IF OVERLY TWEAKED. APPEARANCE WAS TYPICAL OF SONY ES UPPER END SCALE. BUT STILL THE FLAW OR SHOULD I SAY THE POORLY DESIGNED REMOTE CONTROL MADE ME DECIDE TO FIND ANOTHER PRODUCT MINUS LCD REMOTE CONTROL. SINCERELY,
STEVE L.
