The purpose of this post is to correct a grossly inaccurate statement made in the review by Orin. Orin criticized the bass management system of the GTP-760, because he apparently did not carefully read the Owner's Manual. The GTP-760 has 3 presets available, each of which is initially programmed at the factory, but each may be changed by the user. This allows the main speakers, center channel, and rear surround speakers to be designated as either large or small. Hence, you are NOT confined to the 3 presets as described by Orin. For further information about the GTP-760, and specifically about the bass management system, go to Adcom's web site (www.adcom.com) and look at the owner's manual which can be downloaded in PDF format. On page 31 of the manual, you will see a complete description of the setup options for the front, center, and rear speakers, plus the subwoofer.

I assume that Orin's review would have had a higher rating for this excellent digital pre/pro if he had fully understood how to program the unit.

I will be submitting a complete review of the GTP-760 after I have had 1-2 months in which to evaluate its performance.
For now, I am giving the unit a value rating of 5, and an overall rating of 4. More in the complete review to come.

Only one optical input, Setup has to be done on a TV monitor. No component video.

This was my first Adcom, and my last. I spent three weeks with this unit and I was very disappointed. I purchased this unit to replace a Sony Receiver (100wX5 $399), which I had been using and it sounded very good. I was hoping the Adcom would blow it away, but it was actually the other way around. The unit arrived with the display window bad. Not bad enough to send it back but it was annoying that I just spent $1400 and I got something that wasn’t 100%. After hooking it up, it took me a while to figure out the Bass management set up. Even with it set up properly, the bass never really kicked. I had to turn the subs all the way up to get any bass out of it. I also had problems with the digital inputs. I use my DVD player for playing CDs, and a digital coax to connect to the 760. The 760 auto detects the type of signal and switches to the appropriate mode, but its so slow detecting the audio signal you always miss the first few seconds of a song, then if you put in a DVD it never switches to 5 channels so you have to manually select DD. Then things got worse. I found I could not hook ANYTHING to the Analog inputs without it Humming. Humming loud enough to be really annoying. I read the part about ground loop hum and purchased ground loop isolators for both of my satellite recivers. Once they where hooked up you could still hear the hum. It seems that not only did I have a ground loop hum but I also had a higher pitched hum. You could here the hum changing pitch as I added or removed the ground loop isolators. I called Adcom and they said they didn’t know what would cause it and they really didn’t seem to care. I called the company I purchased the 760 from and they told me it could be caused by a bad ground at the outlet, or the ground on my surge protector/power conditioner was causing the problem. They recommended connecting everything to a power strip with only two prongs which I did and the hum still did not go away when anything was connected to an analog input. At this point I just wanted to get rid of it. I returned the GTP-760 and purchased a Sunfire Theater Grand II. WOW what a difference. The Sunfire sounded AWSOME right out of the box, and I had no problems with hum of any kind. Music from the 760 is just so so. Movies are OK. I would NOT recommend this preamp. For the money it should be allot better.
