Strength:

None not even for five lousy dollars.

Weakness:

Perhaps the worst remote ever made no DVD control,no proper control over Sony Vcr from an 8 device remote lol no way.

Lol I remember my sister buying a Sony remote back in 99 for her satellite and we couldnt get it to work with it.She took it back and got a OneforAll I should have taken a hint from this. This remote is near,no it is worthless it can not properly control a VCR!Yes and not just a Mistubishi VCR made in 99 but a 2001 SONY VCR LOL that's so bad.And DVD players Ha ha don't even think about it not going to happen.Definitely a stinker in the same vein as RCAs remotes. They both have lots of buttons that don't work with most products.

Strength:

low cost

Weakness:

everything

This remote is only good for doing a few things. You can turn the components on and off, adjust volume, and change the channels. If you need to do anything else you will need to get up and do it. This product is pretty much useless and your better off juggling four remotes.

Strength:

Multi-device, capable of controlling the most-frequently-used functions of the originals. Gives choice of volume control via your TV or Receiver.

Weakness:

Pre-DVD-era.

Strengths as above. Disagree w/? Arly's review. This remote can control DSS & TV "Guide" and "Menu" functions as well as cycling through your TV-input options (i.e. TV, Video 1, Video 2,etc). It has arrow buttons for intuitive menuing. It also has buttons for "Muting", "Recall", "Sleep", and "Display".
Also, in "Receiver" mode, you can select Vid1-3, Tuner, CD, and Tape functions on your Rcvr, and can then control Play, Stop, Forward, etc ftns of the applicable component by switching to the remote control ftn for that component.
The option of assigning the "TV function" Volume button to operate the Master Volume dial on your receiver is a convenience that's appreciated by any Home Theater System owner.

Strength:

looks good

Weakness:

no DVD!!!!!!!

This thing is bad!! It cannot control a DVD, but also I will come home from school and go to use it and when I hit a button, it will switch to TV mode and does not stay in RECEIVER. It is very frustratiing. To fix it you have to spin the batteries. My friend also has a different model Sony remote and he also has similar problems. I dont what brand to recommmend though! sorry

Strength:

well made

Weakness:

As usual, Sony has only hitched its wagon to the RCA DSS system. No codes for Echostar (Dish) or ExpressVu receivers. Stupid, Stupid, Stupid. Even sony's AV codes for its own products, don't properly work its own brand of AV devices. For example, Video 3 on its AV Receiver cannot be accessed, nor DVD.

Don't buy this product. There's no excuse for not including the Dish Network/ExpressVu codes and Sony can't even get their own AV equipment codes right.

They also refuse to include proper codes for Panasonic and its GAOO video.

A very disappointing purchase.

Strength:

Backlit LCD, controls 8 components, comfortable, attractive design

Weakness:

(somewhat) limited component set, NO Learning capability, NO macros, NON-backlit keys (glow)

I was disappointed, but that is mostly my fault. I was under the misguided impression that this was in fact a learning remote, when in fact it is a pre-programmed-only type. So, if you have components that are non-standard (i.e. not on Sony's list of supported components), you will not be able to control them.

That being said, this is a superb remote for the price. It controls 8 components, which is rare in this price class (below $25 street price), and a welcome feature if you have a tall stack of equipment like I do. To its credit, it comes pre-programmed with a code for just about every component that you could own. Unfortunately, I have a Canadian Digital satelite TV dish (ExpressVu), which is NOT supported. None of the Canadian DSS systems are supported, but there are many codes for U.S. DSS systems (DirectTV, Dish, etc.).

The unit has a backlit LCD, which is mostly useless, normally merely showing the device that you are controlling. It doesn't even have a simple clock to make it usefull. But, during programming this display can give you valuable feedback - a welcome addition. The keys are not backlit, but do glow in the dark.

Although the unit controls DVD players, there is no DVD button for the Receiver input function. So, if you want to watch a DVD, you have to either use the Receiver's remote to switch to DVD, or get up and use the front panel controls on the Receiver. That's a plain IDIOTIC omission; simply inexcusable!

The remote has a powerful IR output, and is VERY comfortable to hold in one's hand, having a curved bottom and a excellent placement of the most-used volume and channel keys. It can also be placed on a flat surface either horizontally or vertically, which makes it easy to spot and to grab.

Unfortunately, the lack of a learning function (what WAS I thinking when I ordered this thing?) means that it goes back in exchange for another model. But, that is the only reason.
