Strength:

Looks Neat... thats about it.

Weakness:

Bulk... too heavy and awkward to hold in one hand. Memory? Did I say memory... what memory?...lol

Great idea, but like alot of gadget type stuff Sony does... half way there. It will learn successfully... but it runs out of memory after programming like 3 of the 12 function buttons available, if you try adding specialty functions from your old remotes. Also, the macros are hit and miss, will work with some stuff but has problems with power on for some equipment. Great remote if you are not too picky in what you want. For the average home user, it will power all your gear... just don't expect to program too much custom, specialized functions from your existing remotes (which you need for home theater these days) onto this remote as it has a bigtime lack of memory. I ran out right away and had to start deleting stuff to get other stuff on... big pain. Also... this thing is so awkward to hold and bulky and clumsy that it actually makes your wrist sore. I give it 2. Sony?... great concept and this thing could have ruled if you would have just payed a little more attention to detail... but isn't that the way it is with half the stuff you make? Why not put a decent amount of memory into this thing for $150+ dollars? Also, why not make it more ergonomic? Also why not make the button names programmable as well? It would not have taken that much more effort to do those 3 things and then this would be the best remote ever made. Once again.... half way there with a good concept.

Strength:

Replaced 5 remotes

Weakness:

None for my purposes

I have all Sony components: DB830 receiver, CD player, tape deck, DVD, TV. It took a little while to learn how to program all the functions I wanted at my fingertips, but having finished that, I am very plaesed with this remote. I paid $99 not including shipping, so the price was right.
If you have mostly Sony components, I would recommend this remote highly. If not, you might want to wait for the RM-AV2100, and see if you like that one. It's not the perfect remote, but at the price I paid, and for my purposes, I will give it top scores.

Strength:

Price and Functionality

Weakness:

Limited number of built in Codes

This unit was purchased to replace eight remote controls. Once you read the manual and attempt to use the built in codes, then you can begin the process of teaching the remote what it really needs to know. I was somewhat suprised that the remote does a poor job with built in codes for Sony equipment. My VCR was programmed fine with the built in codes, but my Laser Disc player and CD changer both required manual programming from the original remotes.

Once programmed, the remote operates as well as you could expect. The macro feature is especially nice as I can turn on my TV, Satellite, and Receiver with a single keystroke.

The backlight is very handy in the dark and yes, there is a hum when you turn it on Under normal listening conditions you'll never notice. Overall, a very nice unit at a very good price.

Strength:

Easy to program. No problem with code list, works great with my yamaha receiver and pioneer laser disc player. Learning mode is great, you can configure each component control to your desired specifications.

Weakness:

Only has 3 macro funtions, a couple more would do the trick. Be nice is the remote could somehow rename buttons to fit accordingly. I used d skip to have my laser open and close. Makes a huming noise when the backlight is operating.

Other than not being able to rename the buttons and a lack of macro functions (3 only) this remote is awesome. I have a sony tv, dvd, and vcr. The presets don't cover everything, but it was easy to program using the learn mode. I had room left over on the amp selection from my yamaha receiver and I included all amp, dsp, and tuner controls on 1 component listing. The LD remote was completely replaced minus the step feature for cav discs. I haven't even used the vcr1, vcr2, cd, md/dat, deck b/a, and tuner selections. All of these can be programed to run another tv , vcr, or dvd. There is room to grow. Buy some rechargeable batteries if you purchase this unit, it takes 6 AA and uses the juice quick because of the backlight. If anyone claims that this remote wouldn't run a selected component, don't believe them because it even learned the remote for my "universal" no-brand name cable box. They probably didn't read the directions or didn't want to spend the time.

Controls everything I've got

Weakness:

not enough macro buttons

Got this remote after a great deal of waiting and a couple of e-mails to Sony Canada (customer satisfaction is way way up there on their list, too bad they can't keep stock on hand). A pure joy to finally clear off my tiny end table of remotes. Now I have a place to put a drink down! Wat too easy to get used to this little gem. Battery life so far has been great. I go through a set o batteries about once every 12-14 months. Do yourself a favor and pick up rechargable alkalines. Recharging batteries once a year is better than shelling out the bucks for a new set every time. And they pay themselves of after a couple recharges. This thing must have some good holding power though. I've never had to reprogram it after juicing back up the batteries. Not like it's a hard job.... Friends look at thing like they're looking at an alien artifact...deer in the headlights, you get the idea. Impressed is an understatement. A remote that fits in with today's systems....from Sony....go figure.

A little Bulky
Can't customize butttons

Got this remote for $120 at J&R Music World (JandR.com). This is by far the best remote in this price range. Some people have said that there are better remotes on the market but they forget to mention to you that they are twice the price. You can't compare things that are so different in price. For $120 you can't get a better remote. This works very well - controls all my components without any problems. Programming it to learn other functions is very easy. Macros are easy to program and use. And the LCD is very clear - I can see it with no problem without the blue backlight but with the backlight it is very clear and even easier to use. I could not be happier with this remote - for $120 it's quite a steal. Yes the Marantz RC2000 and others are better but they are A LOT more money and in my opinion not worth it at all. Buy this remote and be happy with it and with the money you save buy better equipment!!!

I love the Macro Buttons.... one Command tells everything what to do???

Weakness:

There are only Three Macro buttons.... I would like more

I really really like this unit. Its just one nice looking remote vs 6 ugly remotes sitting on my coffee table.... It only took my about 25 min, tops. to set it up with all my components and, what it didn't know i learned in less than 3 secs!! once its done you never have to relearn.

Strength:

very stylish, good price flexible

Weakness:

a little large, says it will handle 12 components but
thats unrealistic for memory programing quirks not in manuel

the marantz 2000 was my first choice but thought that I
would try this one first. I've been rebuilding my system
for a year and it detracts from it to have to fumble for
remotes, and I thought it would be nice to tie everything together with a unifiedremote.A lot of people rave
about the marantz bu I've never tried a touchscreen
before so I decided to try this one first, it looks
like one of those ritzy ht touchpads for a kmart price.
I fussed with it for a while the first day, was quite
furstrated with it. the buttons seemed too small and
I needed the light all the time. but after reading
the instructions and playing with it it got easier to use.
the function buttons arent lit but they are easy to find
(just count over frm the left) and the buttons are easier to use after you use it for a day or two. the transport,
memue cursors, and number pad are all on the edge, and I
was hitting them pretty good even without a light after a while. the remotes big, but so is every other touchscreen
I've seen. after a week I see no reason to take it back,
but be advised that it will only handle full function for about eight or nine componets. And "trick" stuff like
having the c.d player turn on when you select it is cool but
it eats up a lot of memory for some reason. same for the marcros. and thers no speed button on the v.c.r screens.
But thats about it. Mayby my expectations were low after
fussing with cheap remotes, but this remotes really nice.
I havent touched my other remotes since and home theatre
is a lot more fun when your not having to hunt for remotes
or change remotes. And after the learing curve is over
the ergonomics are great but thats sony for you. Of course
with the pronto or similar you get more is that worth the price of a c.d megachanger? Not to me. Sure, I can't plug
this one into my computer but I can't plug my microwave into my computer either. If you can live with this you can save
some bucks, and this remotes very easy to live with.Especially for the price.

Strength:

easy to use. simple to program.

Weakness:

it can't control the sink.

Controls everything except the kitchen sink. I had 4 different remotes to run my home theater system but now with one sony 2100 it is much easier. this thing is so good i'm gonna buy another one and give it to my mom to make her home theater life easier. and you know if you get something for your mom its got to be good. if you look on ebay you can get one for around $110

I wanted to start this thread with the hopes that someone out there has tried this new universal remote. It looks quite good on Sony's website, a bit pricy but it is a new concept.Unfortunately, we don't have them in Canada and I'm hesitant to mail order it without a personal look (or at least a stellar review..)

Thanks
