hmmm.....let's see........very big & heavy? hehehe

-----------THIS IS REVIEW FOR THE MDS-JA20ES---------------
my system is:
RECEIVER: MARANTZ SR-5200
CD-R: PIONEER PDR-609
DVD: MARANTZ DV4100
SPEAKERS: JM LAB TANTAL SERIES (SUB, FRONT, REAR & CENTER)
AND FINAL MD: SONY MDS-JA20ES

I was never a fan of Sony's es products cause i tried some receivers like str-db555es and wasn't happy. I was dissapointed. But sony is the "mother" of Md so i decided to replace my old sony MD deck cause it died and to buy something very very good like mds-ja20es. I MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE. My God!!! this unit is GREAT. Very clean and uncompressed when it comes to prerecorded MD's like CHEMICAL BROTHERS & GEORGE MICHAEL's MD's with a choice of output bit length 24bit. When recording from cd's the sound is the same....the same....the same and don't believe if anyone tells you not. HEAR IT and COMPARE IT!!! it's the same, but when it comes to vinyl recording i would prefer my cd recorder pioneer pdr-609 cause it's more "analogue" than MD.
So my opinion is that MDS-JA20ES is a PERFECT digital recorder with no different sound quality than expensive cd-recorders. 5 stars all the way

sound

Weakness:

should i really complain about giving titles by remote??

always looking for something new music on air (i.e. radio and digital satellite) im pleased by the features of this media in common, 6s time machine, this allows to identify a song AND to get the beginning, too.
and if its not worth keeping it, erase it.
sound? simply great.
my equipment is far away from beeing cheap, altogether more than 7000 dollares, (and its no sorround- something!), pure stereo, and this product fits.
dont misunderstand me, i also own a stand-alone cd recorder, and its fine too, but to record on from sources, you dont know what will be next (radio), its no good solution.
anyway, both medias, MD and CD-R have their strenghts, but sound from my sony MD 20 ES is very good.

Strength:

Solid build, sound, look, complete facilities

Weakness:

display is going worst

I had a Sony 520 and all my friends have Sony 930.
When I started upgrading my MD, it was difficult to hear a big difference between 520 and JA22ES during a short listen.
In the long run, 22 was more open and less metallic (NAD320 amp +Sony330 CD).
But once I updgraded amplifier and CD (Arcam amp+ NAD cd), the difference was incredible.

This MD is beautiful and I can hear directly a difference between a record on my 22ES and the same record on a 930 from a friend (same CD player, digital recording)

Conclusion: 520 is very good in a cheap system and there is no need to buy anything else, you won't hear any difference.
930 is better than 520 but clearly doesn't match the 22ES which is better in term of bass extension and high frequencies.

Last thing: Sony's MD are the ONLY ones to be complete!
(recording levels, timer, cutting, etc...)
All sony's from 530 have exactly the same possibilities.
