Strength:

good sound, high durability, simple interface

Weakness:

not up to the level of CD (much less SACD)

I''ve owned this bundle for over two years now, and it still works perfectly. As for those who say that MD sounds better than CD, I must reply that your perception of MD as being "warmer" than CD is almost certainly due to the fact that MD''s compression results in a slight loss of high frequency information. Thus, MD is not as clear or detailed as CD. However, MD''s convenience is its real selling point. The portable player has nearly replaced by discman, and it will drive a pair of decent headphones (like the Sony MDR-600).

tell me again why i need a tape deck? i have this opti connected to a sony 7es model 5 disc changer. playing around w/ an abx test we used kitaro track 1 disc 1 ten years. you can tell the two disc players from tape.(denon drm 800 dolby c w/ a tdk sa-x casset. but is was impossible to tell mini disc from cd. at around 200 frogskins (local navy exchange/mcrd) it dogs out a 500 ducket tape deck!!! if you can't tell i am in the navy and i am a diver. i p/t (exercise) alot. the portable unit needs a hard blow to even think of skipping.

Strength:

digital recording from CD, DVD; MD player is compact, aesthetically pleasing. MD portable extremely light, sleek.

Weakness:

Easy delete, text writing. No remote.

I finally gave in and bought the Sony MD Bundle 5 from OneCall for an amazing $189.00, complete!!! This is great if you like to make mixes or compilations or don't want to carry bulky CDs and their player. The MD player is quite nice. This particular player is the simple base model for Sony, but adequate for what I'm doing which is basically making recordings from CDs and DVDs. Sound Quality is unbelievable and equal to original CD or DVD sound. I've already thrown out my tapes and tape deck.

The MD portable is a Sony MD33, very nice, metalic silver body, compact at about 4" square with remote controls. This was actually an upgrade from the original MD40 player that was coupled with the Sony MD320 player.

I highly recommend this as an EXCELLENT buy from OneCall.

Good Luck!

I purchased the Sony Bundle 5 for $249 at Service Merchandise. It's not a bad system. The minidisc sounds great. The only drawback is I wish it had more optical input/outputs. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to record CD quality music at a low price. It came with a portable minidisc player which is great for jogging with..now all my old records and tapes I have stored away can be enjoyed one again.

Strength:

Great sound, good price (at the time), can't be scratched, editable, beats CD any day

Weakness:

No remote, tedious for titling (tongue twister!), and only an Optical Digital input, no OD output, and no Mono recording.

I've had this thing for over a year, and this is still my favorite device I've eveer bought. This kicks cassete and CD's asses anyday! Even when recording in analog, as long as you do some trial and error, you can easily make CD quality sound. But when you use digital hookups, it's like the same thing. I notcie a small difference, but I've actually grown to like MD's sound a bit better than CD (it's a bit warmer, if you understand audiophile speak). The portable player ti came with, the EP11, worked good, but it broke down, so BB gave me a MZE33 (I didn't evcen have an exteneded warranty, either! Damn, was I lucky). I say, if you can find this really cheap ($150-200), get it. But, I say get the Bundle 6. It's $250, you get the MZE33, the JE330 (WITH remote), and Mono recording. Defintiely the best deal going, next to the ShaRP MT15.

This piece of kit is second hand and is still in great shape no problems whatsoever which speaks volumes for Sony's build quality. The sound is clear and dynamic. Very impressive.

Strength:

Value, ease of use, quality, NO SCRATCHED CDS.

Weakness:

no remote. no headphone jack. no digital out.

The MD-5 bundle is a great way to get into MD which is an excellent complement to CDs. MD shouldnt be considered to replace CDs but however if you like to have music on the go then you should consider only Sony MD. I have had a bad experience with Sharp's md players which arent well manufactured. Sony however does a nice job even on their most basic models. I reccomend MD for those who listen to music in their car but cant or wont put the cds back in their cases due to storeage problems or just lazyness. MDs are indestructable when compared to CDs. you can toss them around, treat them poorly by leaving them out of the case and they dont get scratched because they have their own plastic shell.

As for sound quality I hear no loss from CD I can play a cd and listen to the MD simultaneously and there is No audable difference. The MD actually sounds better when recorded digitally from my sony DVD to my sony MD deck than when played from my sony 5cd changer. All are connected to my Harman Kardon AVR-10. I hear no loss of bass or treble and I listen to dance music primarily AKA techno Elektronika House or Trip Hop.

If you are tired of buying cds over and over again because you scratch them up go and treat yourself to an in dash md deck and a md deck for your home stereo. You will be much happier when you are driving and you dont hear skips due to your poor treatment of CDS.

So remember CDs are for HOME
MDs are for every other place.

Strength:

Very good for the usage it put up with.

Weakness:

No remote, always had to leave unplugged - at time would turn on by itself. Had a grinding noise from the motor about 6 months out. No reply from Sony customer representative.

Nothing more
