Strength:

I have mine purchase 5 years ago and until now I still use it. The quality of the sound that I am hearing from this headphone is irreplaceable. That's what my friend, one of the most reliable painters in Yuma AZ, also said. We have the same headphone since we bought it from the same shop.

Weakness:

No issues so far.

Strength:

I bought the pair and love the sound. I use it to work at my job, at mold removal louisville ky, where there is often noise, but works great! The sound is clear and shuts out a lot of the outside noise.

Weakness:

I do not have any negative comments about the pair.

Strength:

Seem amazingly clear and accurate without much of the bass or treble bias that so many newer, more expensive headphones have these days. For studio use, or just relaxing and listening these are my favorite best bang for the bucks. Quite comfortable.

Weakness:

Foam pads will soften to almost nothing over the years, but there are replacements

Strength:

The sound is clear and accurate in midrange, and they can hit some of the highest frequencies. Excellent dynamic range affords it a number of uses, from casual listening to things much more analytical. They're just sensitive enough to work with some portable devices (though don't expect good battery life, and it's not their best place).

The pads are comfortable enough to be worn for hours on end. I had no problem with 8+ hours at a time, particularly after the pads softened up over the initial month or two. The cord is long enough that you don't feel tethered to anything, but you have to be careful to not run over it.

Weakness:

The poor construction is the first thing that comes to mind. It seems they had to cut costs to keep it in the $100 price range with the drivers they used. While comfortable due to the weight, the lack of structural support leaves it prone to breakage around the top of the headband mounts. You'll have to be careful to only hold them vertically and only with the band if you want them to last as long as possible.

As far as sound is concerned, the low end is a bit muddy. You'll not get clear and responsive bass at all. You can crank the bass up and these cans will pump it out, just not as clear as one might hope. The high end also is somewhat uneven and takes a bit of EQ tinkering to even out.

These open back headphones have good sound quality for the price. The tone is a bit in the high range and accurate to even a fault: your compressed music may sound worse than you're used to. If you absolutely need clear-cut bass, however, you'll be better off with something else. But prety much everything else, they can do.

Strength:

Decent detail retrieval. Nice soundstage. Sensitive. Rich smooth sound.

Weakness:

Can sound slightly too warm with some CDs. Can be solved by turning the Bass down on the amp slightly though.

Very pleased with these headphones.

I demoed the HD515, HD555 and HD595 in Audio Excellence, where I bought the rest of my kit. I was lucky enough to be able to demo them with my Amp/CD player combo. I was looking for headphones to plug directly into my Marantz PM7001/CD6002 Hi-Fi setup so I could listen late at night without affecting the neighbors. (Or the wife.)

I found the treble to be too "splashy" on the HD555 (maybe something to do with the surround reflector?) and the HD595, while slightly clearer, was not worth the price difference. (Would have been £80 more!) Although if I had a dedicated headphone amp the difference would have been much greater.

Overall the HD515s are a very good headphone. The detail level is about on par with my speakers, (Focal Chorus 705v) although the sound is a lot "warmer". There's a nice soundstage with decent detail separation and good dynamic range. The bass goes quite deep and is pretty rich and weighty, although not quite as fast and punchy as my speakers. They are also pretty sensitive so I have to do most of my listening with amp at only 1 notch.

I should add that I "burned" them in for about 100 hours.

Customer Service

I suppose all I can put here is a plug for Audio Excellence/Audio T. Where else could I have listened to all my shortlisted headphones on my own kit to make my own mind up as to which is best for my needs? A++

Strength:

The cord length is 9'9". Wow, I can get up from my chair in one corner of my room and without taking the 'phones off I can walk across the room and shut off the light for a complete cinematic experience.

The impedance (50 Ohms) allows for a smoother sine wave and coupled with the other great specs (108dB of sound to noise ratio, 0.2% distortion factor, the Neodymium Ferrous magnet-type, and the frequency response of 14Hz - 26kHz) makes for the most enjoyable experience any and every time I listen to music or watch movies.

I also find my enjoyment of the music I'm listening to grows exponentially when I have higher and higher quality sound supplied to them (DVD quality music is sublime to the maximum).

The EQ band is something to take note of as well. Trying other headphones I noticed that some were heavier on the bass, mid, or high range. The EQ band on my last 'phones were more bass-heavy and cut off the higher frequencies even though they were decent quality. This pair is rather steady and even all across the board which makes for an amazing manipulation of sound when a 10-band equalizer is added to the mix (software equalizers are best because of the fine precision when tuning your audio bands as well as both channels being on the same frequencies of your equalizer).

Thank you Sennheiser for changing my ears and audio life!

Weakness:

I keep loosing track of where I put the 1/8" to 1/4" converter. Also, these 'phones are so high quality that lower quality mp3's (160kbps and lower) sound distorted; but in reality the headphones are just playing the mp3 how it really sounds (bad).

Best pair of headphones that I have ever bought. I looked at the specs on the back of the box and was blown away. First off I didn't know Radio Shack had such a high-quality product. Secondly I was attracted to the magnet-type, frequency response but most of all: the sensitivity and impedance. Needless to say I immediately purchased this gem and have never found anything of greater quality for $130 dollars (the next model up is $550). I bought them in the winter of '05 and they have recently broken in.

Might I say that the audio quality went from superb (before they were broken in) to stunning and amazing; the difference a wine connoisseur finds when tasting wine from plastic compared to crystal (it's that awesome). These HD515's are also amazingly light (but durable in construction) and comfortable; I can wear them for hours without my head hurting.

I only ask that everyone at least demo a pair of these to compare their headphone's quality with these. Trust me you will be amazed and blown away.
