from online retailer Summary: This is an excellent DVD player, especially considering the money. DVD players will be obsoloete for anyone with and HD TV in the beginning of 2006. So, there is no use buying a $500 Denon with similar features or up to $2k on top of the line models (ones with SACD, DVD Audio and digital video out). This is the perfect option. I used to have a Toshiba 9200 which is a beautiful player but past its prime. The videoon the Samsung is stunning. I used to have a 40 ft component video run to my projector which is not very good. However, it is stunning with DVI. It looks very close to HDTV. The audio for movies is great. The DVD Audio sounds as good as the Toshiba (which is saying a lot). I haven't tried SACD yet. The interface for the DVD Audio is much better than the Toshiba (ie, much faster and easier to advance tracks.) The remote is good (although not backlit-but who won't use a universal remote). The only bad thing is the display. It is illegible from anywhere but a few feet in front of it. From anywhere else it is a distracting white light. Thankfully it can be turned off through one of the menus (although not mentioned in the manual). I can't believe Samsung would make such a poor display on an otherwise excellent machine.
For less than $200 you cannot go wrong. There is no feature that I can think of that this doesn't have (other than upsampling to 192k-it only upsamples to 96k). Strengths: Has everything you can want, it all works very well, amazing HDMI picture, terrific sound for less than $200 if you look around Weaknesses: Awful display (but it can be turned off) Similar Products Used: toshiba 9200
