Review 2 of 8

Price Paid:  $1600.00 from Creative Sound

Summary:
I've lived with this pre/pro now for a couple of years. Agree with the other reviewers - the unit is easy to set up and has a lot of adjustability regarding cut-offs for each speaker, speaker levels, delay, etc., so you can really tailler the set up to your specific room.

The unit takes a long time to burn in and sound musical, so don't be alarmed if it sounds hard or harsh out of the box- it takes weeks for the board to break in it seems. Once broken in, the sound is crisp, clean, quick, dynamic and 'real'.

I use a cheap universal and tie it into the 1068 via digital cable, allowing me to use the superior DAC's included in the unit. This works quite well, except that there is a slight delay sometimes when listening to CD's - you don't hear the first second or two of the first track.

The unit gets quite hot, so give it lots of room to breath. I had to send it back for a new digital board about 1 year ago, but Rotel took care of it promptly.

This is a great pre/pro for this price and does it all competently.

Strengths:
Functionality and ability to control so many set up parameters with precision.
Ease of set up
Great sound quality, even in two channel mode
Excellent DAC's on board
Value

Weaknesses:
no serious weaknesses

Volume control is awkward (too fast or two slow, depending on mode)
Gets quite hot
One service issue, but taken care of under warranty
Placement of plugs in back could be more spread out for ease with high quality cables

Tied wtih a Rotel 1095 Amp and B & W speakers, I found the Combo too harsh in upper mids and hights, even with great recordings, and even after extensive break in. I recommend listening to a variety of combinitaitons at volumes you listen to at home, before pulling out the credit card.

Similar Products Used:
NAD (which was also very good) and mid-fi stuff - horrible next to this.

Review 3 of 8

Price Paid:  $1600.00 from Sound World appleton

Summary:
"How much do I love you, let me count the ways"
Fantastic sound quality for audio and video. Sounds as good as its more expensive brother (RSP 1098) for slightly more than half the price. It offers no frills just plain old perfect sound regardless of the source. Video switching capability is excellent and doesnt degrade video signal one iota, IMO, it might even improve it! Surround performance is perfect, sound placement, sound delay and "reality" of the surround field are beyond reproach. The music surround modes are excellent, you have never really heard Natalie Cole till you have heard heard her on five channel stereo ! The OSD works in high-def through the component outputs. The controls are straightforward and simple. Only negative is the lack of HDMI connections but judging by how long DVI connections were in vogue (2 years?) it's probably a non issue. The remote is very good though dedicated remote jockeys may know of some better ones around.
Without regrets I can attest that in home theater applications no receiver from any manufacturer regardless of price, THX certified or not, can even pretend to rival separetes of this caliber in any audio or video application. There are receivers in the market tha are more expensive than the price I paid for the RSP 1068 PLUS an accompanying Rotel RMB 1095 (200W x5) amp (total $3600). As far as home theater and straight audio quality, comparing them to this combo is a non sequitor.

Strengths:
Sound, sound, sound! Numerous video and audio connections. Simply fabulous OSD and home theater setup. Nothing in the market even approaches the audio and video performance of this component anywhere close to its price range. It truely competes sonically and in video performance with the best in the market regardless of price.

Weaknesses:
NONE. For the price, less than none.

Similar Products Used:
Surround receivers from Yamaha, Denon

Review 5 of 8

Price Paid:  $1700.00 from Remo, Den haag, Holl

Summary:
I already had a 2 channel RB-981 and a 5 channel RB-985MKII. I was saving money for the rsp-1066 to replace my Denon AVR-3801. Although the Denon is okay in Surround, the Stereo performance is quite bad for a 1500 Euro receiver. Even when only used as a pre-amp in my case. The rsp-1068 is a very good processor. In Surround it is like you sit in the middle of the sound. So mutch more detail and depth than the Denon. the 5.1 input is very configurable and sounds very nice with my Denon 2900 SACD player. Also the 1068 now has a nice torodial transformer and is very silent. Only on very high volumes you get some hiss, but not too mutch for an AV pre-amp.

Strengths:
Build quality Software upgradable All surround formats very configurable good stereo performance 5.1 bass redirect on/off in menu video upsampling to component lots of 12V triggers

Weaknesses:
Remote is so so ( I use a pronto anyway) No way to do bass redirect on analogue and no bass redirect on digital
