Summary:
Warm is the word that comes to mind. Also, the sound is smooth, and the notes are round. It's satisfying sound.

Strengths:
Round warm tone.

Weaknesses:
Hard to find a woking unit that still works - if you clean the pots with electric cleaner from radio shack, you might be able to get rid of static.

Summary:
As described in many reviews the sound of this receiver is legendary. And do you know why. Marantz, Pioneer, and Macintosh are well known for legendary tube amplifiers. I have a theory that there were some capacitors leftover from the 60's vintage tube amplifiers that were used in the early transistor products, namely the 22__ series which includes the 2270. Polypropylene capacitors sound the best and there were plenty of polypropylene capacitors used in the vintage 2270, particularly in the phono section. The capacitors distortion is measured by electrical engineering parameters and the polypropylene capacitors are the most expensive but have the least distortion. The end result is extremely accurate imaging, very warm sound. This gives rise to the "tube sound". Capacitor distortion will distort the imaging, giving rise to a 2 dimensional sound without depth. Also capacitor distortion gives rise to a metallic sound.

Strengths:
Nice power, nice imaging, three dimensional sound. Built like a battleship

Weaknesses:
Periodically will need FM alignment, a few bulbs here and there

FIRST OF ALL: DON'T EVEN CONSIDER LISTENING TO THE 30+YEARS OLD VINTAGE EQUIPMENT WITHOUT SERVICING IT, OR YOU MAY BECOME ANOTHER BORING CRITIC OF THE THINGS YOU DON'T HAVE A CLUE ABOUT.

THERE WILL BE NOISES IN THE SOUND, AND IT WILL MOST PROBABLY SOUND TOO SLOW AND TUBE-LIKE, WITH HIGH FREQUENCIES ROLLED-OFF - BELIEVE ME, THAT'S NOT THE WAY IT WAS SOUNDING 30 YRS AGO!

FOR THIS MARANTZ, YOU MUST ADJUST VOLTAGE FOR 35V, IDLE CURRENT FOR 5V AND DC OFFSET FOR 0, BOTH CHANNELS. TUNER SHOULD ALSO BE ALIGNED. AGED SOLDER JOINTS SHOULD BE REHEATED. SOME CAPACITORS SHOULD BE REPLACED. ALL POTS/SWITCHES SHOULD BE CLEANED.

CONNECTS YOU WITH THE MUSIC AND HAS A VERY SPECIAL ABILITY TO REPRODUCE EVERY NOTE OF THE RECORDING - THIS TRAIT CULMINATED IN MARANTZ 1300DC, THAT CAN SOUND ALIVE WITH PROPER SPEAKERS.

Some vintage Tandberg, Sansui, Kirksauter, Sherwood, Nakamichi, etc. solid-state models sound almost the same or even better, again, for the same price.
Don't expect me to give you specifics - this is a trade secret.

Weaknesses:
STILL HAS THAT SOLID-STATE HARSHNESS / GRAIN (WHATEVER ELSE YOU CALL IT) - YOU WILL HAVE TO SPEND 12 K+ $$$ TO COMPLETELY ELIMINATE THAT FROM YOUR SS SYSTEM. THIS MEANS LISTENING FATIGUE IN THE LONG RUN AT AVERAGE TO HIGH VOLUME. TUBES LOVERS KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.

Summary:
A few months ago, I went to a garage sale in search of vinyl treasures, a.k.a. records. The owner, an elderly gentleman, pointed to a box with a few pieces in it, but there was nothing of interest to me. He then asked me if I would be kind enough to help him bring a radio out from his basement which was too heavy for him to lift. I said I would be glad to oblige. Well, the "radio" turned out to be a Marantz 2270 Receiver. I don't know what possessed me, but I decided to buy it. Now, you see, I'm an audiophile (actually a recovering audiophile, but more about that in a bit). Halfway home I asked myself; what was I thinking? Why did I buy that thing? After all, it's just a receiver.... A r-e-c-e-i-v-e-r. It's just a box with a tuner, pre-amp, amp, and a phono stage stuffed into it. Oh sure, I had heard of Marantz, heard it was good stuff, but let's be serious, it was built back in the Stone Age, back when Richard Nixon was president. How could it possibly sound as good as my cutting edge separate tuner, separate pre-amp, separate amp and separate phono section? Impossible. Absurd to even contemplate. So, after I got home I simply put it on a shelf and disavowed any knowledge of its existence. Then, a few weeks ago my fancy, expensive, don't-you-wish-you-had-one-just-like-it amp decided to have one of its regularly scheduled hissy-fits, and blanked out on me. Again. So, after I took it to the shop for repairs, I said to myself, what the heck, lets plug in that Marantz thing and see what it sounds like. Well, you Marantz guys know what happened next. Talk about a sonic epiphany!!! I was stunned. Instead of trying to figure out what kind of rosin the violin player in the third chair was using on his bow, I was simply listening to music, engulfed and enthralled by its beauty, something I had deprived myself of for a long, long time....... Now, about that "recovering audiophile" part. You can probably guess what happened to my audiophile equipment. It is now residing on the shelf previously occupied by the Marantz. This baby has transformed me from an audiophile back to a music lover. Is there any higher praise you can give a piece of audio equipment? I think not....

Some, but essentially trivial and unimportant.
