Review 5 of 29 Summary: I purchased the eXL:15s as main front speakers as part of a home theater system that included the Energy Take 5s for the rear speakers and the eXL:s8 sub woofer driven by a Denon 2801 AV receiver. When auditioning them, I found that I liked the accuracy of the eXL:16s better, but decided to go with the eXL:15s to save a little money, on the theory that when I didn't have anything to compare them to, I wouldn't really notice the difference. I was wrong.
Particularly with vocals and acoustic guitar music, there is a definite flatness (not freq response) or dullness to their sound. It seems to be a characteristic of the midrange. It is difficult to describe, but it was noticeable even during casual listening and occasionally when playing movies. It bothered me enough to replace them with eXL:16s.
There is a significant difference between the two models. I know HT systems "shouldn't" be used for music, but sometimes we do. I strongly recommend springing for the eXL:16s. They are some of the best sounding speakers I have encountered (if supplemented with a subwoofer). They seem to color the sound very little. As an aside, I also upgraded the sub to an eXL:S10. To summarize, they're not bad for the money, but there is noticeable aural coloration of music and voices. Strengths: Size, high frequency response Weaknesses: Mid-range accuracy Similar Products Used: Various other comparably sized home theatre front main speakers of a wide variety of prices.
