Strength:

Pure sound, great picture, easy to use. Solid as a rock.

Weakness:

"no play" on newer cd's, remote is awkward

I'd have to say that this is a wonderful unit when i can get it to play which is most of the time. The problem I have is a "no play" issue with newer dvd's. It plays my dvd collection to perfection but newer rentals can't be read and just shows me "no play". I've cleaned, I've unplugged, I've blown hard, even tried changing the region code (which I was unsuccessful at), but nothing works. It's very annoying since I use this as my only dvd player. However, that being said, the sound from this unit on cd's is enough to justify the costs if that's what it becomes, my cd player. If you connect it right with good cables and have a good a/v player and decent speakers, the sound difference over a "store bought" unit is very noticeable. You'll find yourself listening to your favorite cd's on the edge of your seat waiting for your favorite part.

Strength:

Sound & Vision. I know there is better out there, but at what price. You can't go wrong with this unit.

Weakness:

The remote. It seems like it was made for Hobbits, with Hobbit sized buttons and no backlight.

I've had this unit for over a year.I found it for almost free on U-Bid. I was putting together my second HT system and wanted a player without a lot of bells whistles(ie cd-r, cd-rw,mp3)I have another player to handle those disk's. DVD-A was something I did want, and this player handle it very well. There is no base management to speak of,but coming thru the Denon 4802,it's very respectable. But the reason I'm writing this review is for the video end of the unit. I have a widescreen HI-Def tv(Hitachi). DVD's on this thing are pristine.I just bought a Toshiba progressive scan player, and for the life of me I can't see the difference. The Denon is every bit as detailed and clean as the Toshiba. Now I have to say that build and price are in the Denons favor. The Toshiba I got from Best Buy for about a hundred bucks. I can't see a hundred bucks worth of difference. The Denon is just a very, very good video player. I A-B the two using the Lord of the Rings four disk set. Switching between the two players, both using componant cables, the images were clean, detailed and the same.I have not had the problems some others have complained about in this section. My only beef is that the remote SUCKS. This is a quality piece of gear,so I will be taking the Toshiba back and spending the money on movies and music. The 3300 is the best non progressive progressive looking player I've seen.

Strength:

video looks good support

Weakness:

manual remote should be backlite

I have had good luck with many Denon pieces of equipment and have always just bought there stuff when buying a new piece. I have owned this DVD-3300 unit for about a year. I was having occasional problems with delays between sceens of movies right from the beginning. Not every movie, and only once per movie if it happenned. I don't know if this is the unit switching layers on the dvd? I talked to Denon and they sent me a software upgrade on cd, which automatically installs when you put the disc in. This didn't seem to help. Other then that occasional problem, the player has been great. I don't use it for playing anything other than dvd's so I couldn't tell you about its other features. Denons support was good, I had the upgrade disc within 2 weeks, even though it had no effect on my problem.

Strength:

great picture...solid construction... excellent dvd-audio...attractive design

Weakness:

denon's products are solid...however, i think they need a better QUALITY ASSURANCE DEPT to make sure that products with defects DO NOT LEAVE THE FACTORY...i have had other instances a couple a years ago, where small things, like a/v terminals come loose... the technology is outstanding but Q & A needs to be improved considerbly...still, i won't penalize this player for Denon's Q & A problem...

the player developed the same problem that other users have complained about...the dvd picture breaks into squares like the ones on dss...anyway, i took it into a denon authorized dealer for repair...they told me it was a bad laser...so i had it replaced...it cost $365 (laser + labor)... if it's still under warranty...you'll pay nothing...anyway, this post is directed toward those folks with the same problem... btw, i still think this is a great dvd player...it plays great now...

Strength:

Picture quality without Progressive Scan.

Weakness:

Remote buttons are to small. In low light when watching a movie I cannot figure out top from bottom on Remote. These problems would be less if Remote was backlit.

This is a very good DVD Player for Movies, Music Videos & Concerts. But if you also want to use it for a CD Player or Transport look for another DVD Player or add a seperate CD Player or Transport for CD's. Strength:

Superb Video Quality - Simply unrivaled. Superb Audio Quality - Sounds better than my $400 Marantz CD64mkII OSE. Supports VCD on CD-RWs.

Weakness:

NO CD-R support period.

This player is marvelous. Extremely high quality player. It seems like Denon has custom-fitted EVERY SINGLE component. I've tested 8 HQ ($800-$1300) players and this one simply stands out from the crowd. It put my Marantz CD64mkII OSE to shame. This is NOT a multipurpose player, so think twice before spending your hard-earned money. My config at home: Denon AVR-2800 Denon DVD-3300 Panasonic NV-HS820 Sony 25" KVS-something. About to be replaced. ;-) Paradigm Monitor 7 (2) Paradigm CC-150 (1) Paradigm DiPolar (2)

Strength:

excellent cd-player crisp detailed picture DVD Audio sounds great

Weakness:

doesn''t play home-made cd''s from the PC. But who cares?

After testing both the DVD2800 and DVD3300 from Denon I chose to buy the 3300. It is an outstanding DVD-player, enough said... It gives the feel of being a weel-built machine from the first look and lives up to the promise without a flaw. Great picture and the abilities as a cd player alone are worth acknowledging. I found my player for the next several years...

Video Capabilities

If you have leanings in the direction of DVD-Audio
you might want to take a listen at the Denon DV3300.
At recent trip to the local HIFI store in our area
we brought along one of our own CDs to perform the test
comparsion of the DENON side by side with the SONY.
From a standard CD the DENON and the SONY are
are comparable units. The Sony however seems
to be add a bit too much bass which seems to create
an imbalance with all the other instruments or vocals
on any given CD. Both offer great sonic performance
however I walked out of the audio room slightly
favoring the DENON. THe Video portion of the
Sony and the DENON should both be considered
non-factors in purchasing either of these
units since Sony has obviously not done a
real good job with Video since the 7000 came out
several years ago. I don't think DENON was really interested in making the 3300 a video piece at all.
So if you want SACD buy the SONY but get
ready for Video Disappointment (check out
secrets to home theatre progressive dvd shootout)
If you believe in the future of DVD-Audio then
the DENON is the way to go. In any case you
present collection of CD's will sound fantastic
in either unit with the Sony perhaps overbassing
just a bit.
