Summary:

I have recently moved into my own pad and realised that my existing setup was not going to fit. Mission M3i's. My parents had used Bose since 1999 when the purchased an Acoustimass 5 series 3 setup which I personally loved the sound off. The question for me now was what do I go for that gives good sound and can be accomodated in a small space. The bose sprung to mind.

Ok so I know that there are alot of criticism out there regarding Bose acoustimass setups and that they are well over priced for what the are. In some respects I would agree with that statement but I decided to do a bit of homework to avoid purchasing a complete set for a silly price tag.

After looking at the new Bose acoustimass module, I immediately thought that It had been designed from a students GCSE Design Technology project. It looked crap and I have read that the components and material was no better either. The old subs looked much better and the AM5 had this type which I knew sounded pretty good. I picked up a good condition second hand Acoustimass 6 sub for £70 which was the start of the system. Now I needed cubes. After looking around I found a guy in the states selling the uprated Jewel cubes new on their own. I had never heard these so was taking a gamble as well as some people saying they would not work with older subs. I went for them. I must say that once up and running they sound great. They need a day or two to loosen up but all in all a nice sound. The sub works great and after some research before hand, the freq response is the same as the larger cubes.

Overall verdict:

Dont buy a compete system as there not worth it. Shop about and put a system together bit by bit if you need to. Theres plenty of kit on the web. Make sure your amp can drive the module as they do need a fair kick to drive them.

Jewel cubes will work with older modules!
