from Karl's-Sioux Falls, Summary: Sony dvp s360 quit so bought Onkyo S555 to replace. While shopping, checked out this Toshiba and bought it. Had Philips TP3284C1 - same white vertical ghostlike bars - no solution and, in my opinion, just as big a consumer fraud as the Sony in terms of failure of Philips to address the problem by recalling and replacing sets, based on what I can find on the internet. Back to the Toshiba - great sound, even without my home theater speakers. Super picture in every respect, some good options regarding settings and adjustments. When paired with my Toshiba and using component video, there is a noticeable and vastly improved difference in the quality of dvd viewing. Regular cable looks better, too, in my opinion. Was tempted to go the HD route, but glad I saved the money. Price paid was comparable best deal I could find on internet less over $125 given that I did not have to incur shipping expense. Can't say enough good things about this, sorry this is not so specific, but a great product. Have seen 36" Sonys (non flat screen) with pictures I think are inferior. Have not noticed any issues with the flat screen yet, and really like the difference. Have not yet found or ordered video essentials package, but strongly considering. Strengths: Picture quality and sound quality. Plus, I love the remote, which is good, because as good as the Onkyo DVD player is, the Onkyo remote is terrible. Weaknesses: None. Similar Products Used: Philips 32" above.
