Review 2 of 3

Price Paid:  $549.00 from Best Buy

Summary:
The first time I purchased the 32a40 was at Sears. Other than the fact that all three Toshiba TVs I brought home were defective. The final purchase was made at Best Buy and the set has been fine. Hmmm, I wonder if Sears has a quality control issue...

It is amazing to me that Toshiba sells as many TVs as they do with their default settings. Are they color blind? After reading other Toshiba TV reviews here its obvious that its not just me.

Pros:
- Best Buy $549
- clear picture
- geometrically balanced
- No overscan cropping like on other TVs
- S-Video picture quality no different than "color stream"

Cons:
- Factory Tint default setting is way too red
- Factory Contrast default setting set at max
- Theatre setting is useless due to unwatchable settings
- Dot crawl even with the 3-line digital comb filter

Summary:
Overall a very good set. In hindsight I would have bought the Sony Trinitron (non-Wega) for a few bucks more. The main reason I went for the Toshiba was the reliability rating in Consumer Reports (which is suspect) and of course the price. Flat screens are over-rated - especially for the price hike. In a nutshell: I very likely will not buy a Toshiba in the future.

Reds: What can I say? The human eye is most sensitive to this color and Toshiba somehow has missed this important fact. My kids watch "Clifford the Big Red Dog" on PBS and he is a disturbing bluish red! You have to adjust the Tint setting to about 3-4 notches from the max green (right side) to get the red color most correct. "Medium" color temperatre is the best choice for true white. Why Toshiba has the default set on "Cool" is beyond me. It is way too blue on my set. The "Theatre" setting is a complete joke -why did they bother with it? The contrast needs to be reset to the left about 4 or five notches.

I recommend that you rent the "Terminator 2" DVD and adjust the picture using the THX TV test pattern setup. Good luck!

Strengths:
Clear picture, competitive price, quality, geometry

Weaknesses:
Factory Tint, Contrast settings

Review 3 of 3

Price Paid:  $520.00 from Best Buy

Summary:
This TV has a good rating in Consumaer Reports and Toshiba scores high on reliability beating Panasonic, Sony and RCA. This model does not have PIP but does have two video inputs (one with S video or component video). The screen is not totally flat but nothing in this price range has that feature. With a DVD using the S video input the picture is excellant. The remote is easy to use but is pre-programmed to operate only the TV a cable box and a VCR. It will not operate a stereo receiver or DVD player. You can purchase universal remotes to do more if needed. While you can get a better set such as a Sony Wega for much more money, this set represents great value for the cost. I have been very happy with it.

Strengths:
Good Picture with good color, good control menu, easy to use remote, great price

Weaknesses:
Sound lacks bass, Remote control limited.
