Bottom Line: At the time, I was not ready to commit to HD, so this Sony offered the best non-HD compromise. I regret being so shortsighted now, limited to 480 interlaced so Progressive Scan DVD players mean nothing to this TV. While the picture is beautiful, it was the WOW sound that drew me in. The TruSurround setting works really well for my family room from a catty cornered position. Bass reinforcement from the corner is too boomy to use the WOW setting. The TV circuit board has been replaced - problem where the TV would not turn on. Thankful that I got the extended warranty because of the TV's 200+ pounds of heft. The $1,200 price paid includes my 3 year additional warranty. The picture is stil beautiful, but I agree with the other reviewer's post about noticing a curvature at the bottom of the screen. I have it hooked up to Dish Network and notice an uneven bottom when I use the Guide for TV listings.

Bottom Line: This TV cost me 2 grand canadian with the sony stand and taxes. This is quite a deal considering the TV retailed for 2000 alone. I was looking to buy another brand of TV just for the sake of change but the Sony had the best picture once again.
Only two things bother me about this and other current TV models, that they're only available in silver and as far as Sony CRT TVs are concerned, all their 36 inch models have a very slight curvature to the bottom part of the image which is noticeable only when viewing widescreen films or if a straight line is playing on the tube.
I had a Sony technician come and hook up this generator that creates vertical and horizontal lines across the screen, and though he improved the overall straightness of the picture, the curved bottom still exists. He told me that since CRT screens have gone perfectly flat, it's been very difficult to create a perfect picture particularly at the four corners. Convergence of the 3 color beams is less than perfect at the edges of the screen but this is a problem I also have with my computer monitor.
I might sound dissatisfied but I'm not. Overall this is a great TV and its flat screen eliminates almost all glare compared to curved screens. Its image quality is far superior to the likes of Panasonic, JVC and Toshiba which I also looked at.
LCD and Plasma screens are nice but produce pixelation when objects are moving, so I still find tube TVs far superior particularly where price is concerned.
Another advantage of this 4:3 ratio TV is that its about the same size as a 34 inch widescreen TV when viewing 16:9 images and it would take a 42 inch widescreen to equal its size when viewing 4:3 material such as old sitcoms.
I give it 4 stars overall because 2 thousand dollars is still a lot of money even though it's just a fraction of the cost of LCD and Plasma TVs. The electronics firms still like to gouge us.
