Strength:

Very good picture, excellent audio, nearly flat screen.

Weakness:

requires painstaking calibration to look its best.

This review is for the 32D501 which is basically the same set with an additional S video input, I believe. Like many TV's this one looked horribly overdriven out of the box. After a couple of weeks of tweaking the peformance improved tremendously. Color is rich yet natural looking with good blacks. The screen is quite flat, not as flat as the Sony models and the Panasonic but much flatter than the Toshibas (IMO). While the audio obviously cannot rival a dedicated HT system, I found it to be excellent. Much better than the competition. The comb filter is OK, though not up to the quality of the Panasonic ($300 more). Images look very clear and sharp from my digital cable hookup. DVD's are superb through the component inputs. I am partial to JVC TV's as I have always found them to be reliable and good performers for the buck. This one is no different. The Sony's are overrated (especially the WEGA), the Toshiba Cinema Series I auditioned was fine but no better than this set, and the screen was too curved for my taste. I liked the Superflat a lot but could not justify the additional $$$ for a set with no component inputs. For the $650 I spent for this unit, I am very pleased.

Strength:

Fantastic picture, great remote, & great speakers

Weakness:

None that I have found

I bought this TV after buying a 36" Toshiba. I didn't realize how bad my Toshiba was until I got this set. All I had to compare my Toshiba to was a 1989 19" Mitsubishi, & it
looked unbelievable compared to it. Well then I found this site & started to look at JVC’s & Hitachi's (for my bedroom). I liked them both however the Hitachi took way
too long to change channels. I bought one of the last JVC's I could find and got a good deal because the newer models were coming out. Well when I got it home I couldn't believe the difference in the picture between it & my Toshiba. It was like the difference between the Tosh & my old Mitsu. I no longer liked my Tosh & I had paid a lot more for it. I now have my JVC hooked up to a DVD & the picture is even more unbelievable. I have since looked around some more and believe that JVC makes the best tube out there. I plan on selling my Tosh & buying another D=Series & will be hooking a satellite dish up to it. I will up date everyone once I have done so.

Strength:

component video, nice looking, great color saturation, 2-tuner PIP

Weakness:

Heavy

First of all, this review is for the JVC AV32D501, not 32D500. This is a very nice set for the money. When I was deciding what set to buy, I had a hard time deciding between this and Toshiba 32A60. Both sets had component video and 2 tuner PIP so the choice was difficult. Something about the Toshiba and what seemed like an inability to get rid of the red in the picture. With the JVC, I could eliminate the reds and produce and very nice picture. I had Sears place the 32D501 and 32A60 next to each other so I could get a direct comparison. IMHO, the JVC had much better picture quality. DVD's look wonderful and equal the picture on my friends Sony. Also, the JVC has a relatively flat tube whereas the Tosiba seemed to be more rounded and glare inducing. For those not interested in home theater, the JVC produces excellent sound; even better than the WEGA's in my opinion. Got it at Sears for $650 and that's including taxes. Not bad for 2-tuner PIP, component and s-video, and a very nice picture. Excellent value when compared to Panasonic Superflat and Sony WEGA prices.

Got the AV-32D501 for Christmas and I couldn't be happier. This is a quality TV. The picture is great. I haven't used the speakers because my room is a theater so i really can't comment on them. As for the picture, i am very happy with it. My brother has a $1,300 sony and i feel they are on the same level. JVC has a great product here. In my mind there is no reason to go spend the extra money on a sony when you have a quality TV for a lot cheaper.

Components Video Inputs, Custom Video Settings Memory, A/V Link

I recently relocated and during the move my Mitsu 35" got stolen (those moving companies . . .!). Looking for a replacement I auditioned Sony WEGA (which I have never trust) JVC D-Series and Panasonic D-Series. As someone already pointed out the scan lines on the Sony Wega were just to much for me. The Panasonic was the best of all, but too expensive. So I ended up with the JVC which has a very good picture, A/V interconection capabilities (a must unless you want to be turning equipment on and off every time you change a source on your HT receiver) plus the very necesary component video inputs. I would have prefered to see the component input separate from the S-Video, but I can live with it. Bottom line: the 32D501 is definitively better than the Sony model and though not as good as the Panasonic it is the best buy all arround.
Notice that I have never compared it to the Mitsubishi. It is a shame that Mitsubishi stopped manufacturing direct view tv.

Strength:

Lots of inputs including component; Bright, flat picture tube; Excellent price

I was looking for an inexpensive replacement for my 10-year-old RCA 20", narrowed it down to JVC D-Series and Toshiba in the same price range. Earlier I was considering Sony WEGA or Pan Superflat, but WEGA was too much money for non-HDTV, and frankly I think the picture is TOO sharp. I just don't want to be able to see all the scan lines from across the room! Pan Superflat is my personal favorite in terms of picture quality, but Consumer Reports has Toshiba and JVC equally reliable, with Pan and Sony significantly worse. So it was easy for me to pick a cheaper set that was more reliable.

So far I am ecstatically happy with the AV-32D501. Dish network through S-Video looks amazing, the comb filter is very good for cable and VHS, and DVDs through component look absolutely spectacular. The horizontal resolution and color rendition are beautiful on this set, especially with DVDs. It is extremely easy to do the anamorphic squeeze on widescreen enhanced DVDs (via the service menu) and the improvement in vertical resolution is quite noticeable and striking.

I actually have Dish, DVD and VHS connected on composite through my receiver to Video1, then Dish connected to S-Video on Video 2, with DVD component connected to Video 2 also. I then switch between Dish and DVD by turning Component on/off in the setup menu. But my wife or mother-in-law can still play everything through Video 1 if they want.

So that is one of the negatives, I would prefer S-Video and Component to be on separate input modes, but if it saves cost to have fewer, this works well enough. The only other negative is that test patterns on the AVIA DVD show some blurring in the corners. I assume this is a symptom of the flatter screen and I understand even WEGAs have this problem.

When I calibrated with AVIA there actually weren't a lot of adjustments, in fact the default color settings were extremely accurate! Detail (Sharpness) had to be dialed down a lot, but that is the case with every set. Also, it's great to have a "standard" video setting to switch to for playing games, or during the day when more brightness is required without losing my calibrations in "choice" mode.

Overall - a great set! Now I need to watch all my DVDs again to see what I was missing. The only reason I give it 4 stars overall is I know that Panasonic and Sony have better pictures, however I don't think they are worth the money, and they are less reliable.

Strength:

Crisp, vivid picture, great sound, terrific price. Appears huge in my entertainment center.

Weakness:

Haven't found any yet.

After 15 years, I was forced to look for a new television. For years, I've been wanting a 32-inch television. My heart was set on the Sony Wega KV32FV16. When I arrived at United Audio Center, I was amazed by the Wega's picture...AND THE PRICE. I then looked at the regular Sony Trinitron. Right beside it was the JVC AV32D501. I was amazed not only by the vivid, deep colors of the JVC, but by the sound and the appearance. I then compared it to the Sony Wega. To be honest, the difference wasn't that great. The Sony Wega is not $550 better than this JVC set. I purchased the JVC AV32D501, and it arrived just in time for the start of the NFL playoffs. I hooked the set up to my stereo receiver, and the viewing experience is unbelievable. Buy this television set. You won't be sorry. I love it, and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to upgrade to a 32-inch set.

Strength:

Very clear picture, good sound for tv speakers, very good color reproduction, multi function remote.

Weakness:

When changing channels
using the arrow keys on the remote, there is static each time.

This is a very nice tv for the price. The picture
comes near my Sony which cost much more, and the sound produced by the tv is better than the sony. Color is very vivid and the picture is sharp. I bought this as a temporary TV until HDTV gets more reasonably priced so that ruled out the 32" Wega which was $400 more and not much better. Very good value. This is actually a 32D502 which is the 2001 model which is silver and has a 3 comb filter.

Strength:

Excellent picture quality. Hell of a buy. Comes fully loaded with all inputs and jacks. Worth every penny.

Weakness:

NONE!

When reading the other reviews I was rather upset with the one oddball review by Brian Bates. Mr. Bates has to be out of his mind and from the sound of his review he sounds like he is onyl bitter about not getting a good deal on his TV and the fact that he could not return it. Every now and then there is a sour egg in the batch but this is an excellent TV and everyone should consider it.

Strength:

multiple a/v inputs, pip, 800 lines res., dimensions --it fit in my entertainment center ;)

Weakness:

one trivial gripe: I really like the remote. I think its well thought out and easy to use BUT I have yet to determine the logic of the backlight feature. The backlight lights up the four largest and most easy to find buttons on the remote (the + and - volume, and the + and - channel). Those buttons I have no problems finding. Why not highlight the smaller, harder to find buttons?

This is a review for the 32D501.

I narrowed down my search between this JVC, the Phillips 32PT71B and the Toshiba 32AX60. The Phillips had all the functions I was looking for but I was turned off by other Phillips model reviews and several horror stories of their customer service. I couldn't find the Toshiba 32AX60 in any local stores. I was able to look at a Toshiba 32A60 but it didn't have all the features I was looking for. I saw the JVC in a local Sears. The picture on the JVC in the store was comparable to more expensive TVs (although Sears did have a crappy cable feed.) I read many reviews here and they overwhelmingly said how great the picture was. I took the reviews to heart. Some reviews mentioned Sears would price match. I was able to get Sears to match an internet price for this model.
Some of the features that stood out for me: PIP, a/v jacks in the front (this helps a TON when you have a video camera or even a game console.), sound quality (not bad and it will hold me over until I can upgrade my receiver), component video input, 2 S video jacks...
I have owned this TV for nearly six months and I am very happy with my decision. The picture quality is very good. I installed dish network a couple weeks ago and the picture is incredible. If you are looking for a larger tube TV with great picture and features at a relatively reasonable price, I think you would be very happy with this model.
