I currently own a Sanyo PLV 70/ HD 20 since October of 2002. Upon purchase I immediately had three problems, which took three months to finally resolve- 1. The fan continued to switch to high output for no valid reason. 2. After returning to me from repair the same problem immediately reoccurred. 3. The company then returned to me a “repacked’ unit with several dead pixels which apparently had been rejected by another purchaser.
After several calls and demands the company finally made good on a new unit that worked properly without dead pixels of fan problems.
Now comes the latest. After about 1500 hours on my first lamp, I decided to purchase a new one and keep my old lamp as a backup. The new lamp arrived in November 2003 was installed and looked good for three months. A friend then suggested that the PJ lacked the original picture quality. After some tweaking and unsatisfactory results I noticed the brightness fading rapidly over the next 40 hours of use. After 150 hours of use the lamp is no longer useable. My old lamp is now reinstalled and is good enough for now. However, Sanyo refuses to consider any refund or rebate on the purchase of a replacement lamp.
Furthermore, Sanyo does not want the defective lamp returned to them to evaluate why the premature failure. It seems logical that this company would want to evaluate such failures to determine cause and take steps to correct to prevent future failures. Unless Sanyo has so many of these defective products they are just hoping the issue goes away.
Beware and caution to anyone considering the PLV 70. If you cannot afford $450.00 to buy a new lamp every 150 hours of use, you may want to consider a projector from a reputable company.
PS- This replacement lamp is the exact same part# and manufacturer (manufactured in Belgium) as the one which came in the original equipment. Sanyo lists many lamp sellers on their web site where you can purchase this lamp. So it is not like I bought some off brand knockoff. Strengths:
