Summary:
With respect to the Norcent 4231, the price is right for a plasma 42 inch TV. The picture seems about on par with any other decent conventional picture tube TV; certainly not that "looking out a window" quality that you see in some of the video store's displays. Otherwise, it seems to function as expected. There is one serious flaw in the design that considerably limits the Norcent's utility: That is, the lack of remote codes so that the operation of the device can be integrated with home entertainment centers. Although the machine will turn itself off after ten minutes or so (probably not a good thing for any device with a limited screen life)of having no signal, it can only be turned on from the Norcent remote. Similarly, other functions; e.g., return to last channel, TV volume, and the like, also require the use of the Norcent remote. When I made inquiries to the company's customer service, I was advised that they "are working on getting universal remote codes," but they do not seem too confident that this can be done. So with this caveat, I would recommend the Norcent 4231 as a low cost and relatively effective approach to large screen plasmas.
