Finally stepped up to HiDef and am enjoying it. The set has both analog and digital tuners and cable card. Once you get the cable card working, you can enjoy HD and digital cable without a set-top cable tuner. That means NO cable box and a much better picture.
If you have a JVC HD set of any kind and you want to use a Motorola Cablecard, make sure you get the JVC firmware update so the cable card will work with the current Cablecard software version. JVC software update is F16B and is compatible with Motorola Cablecard software version 4.21 . The JVC update is mailed out on a SD card that you place in the media card slot on your set. It loads the software for you.
I puchased a JVC D-VHS and the new JVC digital amp 702B to complete the HDMI and Compulink system. The first D Theater tape we watched in 1080i with DTS surround was enough to confirm we had definately stepped up to upper butt-crack. My old 480P dvd collection is collecting dust these days. Strengths:
Digital cable without the box - one less remote and you can record one HD digital channel while watching another.
Simple classy look and great picture. It's a panasonic screen with JVC wizardry. Weaknesses:
JVC support line. It took 5 calls before I could find the right answer from their staff. JVC insists on putting their most ignorant staff as the front line. Most of them don't seem to know squat about electronics. They are just warm bodies.
The manual sucks - but we all know that already. JVC has never produced a good one.
