Price Paid:  $1766.00 from Online Authorized Se

Summary:
I ended up with this set, as the online retailer did not have any Toshiba 51H83's left in stock on the East coast. Instead, I was offered the 51HX83 Cinema Series set for a $50 premium in price, and I jumped on the deal. The 16:9 widescreen set has a nice anti-glare screen, and when set to Movie Mode (Warm color setting), it looks great out of the box, and can be nicely calibrated further using Avia. When viewing DVDs from My Denon 1600 progressive scan DVD player, 16:9 animorphic animation in particular looks phenomenal. HD pictures look a bit more grainy when used with my 1st gen HDTV cable box from Cox (Scientific Atlanta model HD-3000), but that could be the quality of the source signal. I loved the magic focus auto convergence calibration feature... it saves a *lot* of time. The remote control is also very nice, and fully backlit. My sole complaint on the remote is that going to a specific input requires a minimum of 2 button presses (or cycling through all the inputs one by one as the other alternative). I would have preferred just being able to press one button to go to a given input. My last observation/gripe is that when adjusting the colors on the set to calibrate it, the text stays all over the screen, so it is dificult to adjust while looking at the video test patterns. Toshiba should really look at doing away with this, as calibrating the set is quite important long-term. That said, all around, the set is a fabulous value, and easily well worth the money I paid for it.

Strengths:
Great looking 1080i/540p HDTV/Progressive Scan picture, anti-glare screen, auto convergence feature, the set allows you to turn the dreaded scan velocity modulation (and other "picture enhancements" OFF!

Weaknesses:
Remote could contain buttons to each of the TV's inputs directly, difficult to adjust colors on set using test patterns due to calibration text all over the screen.

Similar Products Used:
Hitachi, Mitsubishi and Panasonic HDTV sets of similar retail price.

The unit arrived from China well packed and everything seem to be in place. No external abuse by the carriers. The only problem was the power supply it came with. The box came with a cheap step-down converter.
