Review 1 of 11

Price Paid:  $11999.00 from SONY SUPERSTORE NYC

Summary:
The TV worked great for about 2 years and then the quality deteriorated. The biggest problem is that it intermittently goes black and flash a diagnostic code of five (5). A SONY recommended technician has been working on it since 5/12/2003 and the problem remains and he now says he doesn't know what the problem is and wants to start replacing boards ontil fixed. SONY Support is terrible and this was an expensive mistake. SONY products go absolete quickly and repair for such products is nearly impossible.

Strengths:
picture quality and size

Weaknesses:
lack of multiple component video inputs. Overall quality and support

Review 4 of 11

Summary:
So I too have had Sony in my house several times and they have been unable, to date, to fix the tv although they are still "working on a fix". I've had this set for a little over a year, and have been de-bugging the TV in my house since I received it. Here's the list of issues:

1) When the background is black, you can see lighter black lines aboyut 5" from either side. Sony fixed this with an interesting on-site 2 hr soldering of capcitors and blue wires. While it fixed the dark background issue, you now see mild gray ones when the picture is bright.

No fix to date.

2) When I hooked up my new sony 9000 progressive scan DVD player to video 5 (only place it works) the picture looked great. I then, using the DVD player, switched it from progressive to interlace and they picture went black. Sony came out, installed a new uProcessor, and it fixed that specific issue. Unfortunatly, I created several new ones. First the picture, when using progressive in "FULL" mode is no longer centered. It's now skewed left. Second, when using "4X3" mode, the lines are hooked at the top of the picture near the gray bars / picture interface.

3) Sony came out and literally replaced the entire right side of the internal electronics - "matched from the factory". When the tv turned on, nothing worked right so I agree with what Mike has stated. They than put the old boards back and the picutre was ok. Once they left, after watching the tv for 30min or so, the picture flashes and eventually goes black.

They are still working on a fix.

They will NOT repalce the tv. I've contacted the office of the president and they refuse to give me a new one stating their policy is to fix not replace.

I've never been so FRUSTRATED in all my life!!

Any ideas????

Strengths:
Picture (when working)

Weaknesses:
Bugs, bugs and more bugs

Review 5 of 11

Price Paid:  $9200.00 from Good Guys

Summary:
In response to Ed, Since I got my replacement 65HD1, I have had no problems. I too recently purchased a progressive scan dvd as an upgrade. I had the dvp-s7700, then got the Toshiba SD-9200 prog. And yes, I had to use the HD input (video5). Otherwise you get the split screen, if it does not handle progressive signals.

The picture is incredible...I swap back and forth between interlaced and progressive (still using the HD input and Monster M1000 series component video cables), and it's true, those jagged lines that are were noticible are smooth. A good test is to view a scene that has a dark background, with a bright object with diagonal lines...and as the camera pans across the screen...this is where you will see it.

Anyway, back to the topic. I think the original shipments of the HD1 had problems, and the later ones performed and were manufactured better. I got mine Nov 1999, and my replacement one came Mar 2000. A word of advice, replacing parts will not do it. A Sony master tech took 7 tries (at 4-8 hours each visit) to realize that these TV's have a unique "fingerprint" once shipped from the factory. The parts are born together and must remain together, otherwise, something else will go wrong. Trust me, I had ever single board replaced, and reprogrammed. It does not work. Complain to get it replaced if you are not happy.

Good luck.
