Review 1 of 2

Price Paid:  $380.00 from ebay retailer - new

Summary:
The first reviewer was certainly correct. I have always had fairly high quality sound systems. My current system is easily considered at least "mid-fi". The system I generally listen to consists of an Outlaw 950, Parasound amplification, the Axiom Epic 80 speaker system, and an SVS sub. My older NAD system has been placed in the family room for more general listening. When this setup was created, I was without a sub for it. My wife wanted something "invisible" because the family room was hers to decorate (I get the basement - a full home theater, a game room, and a bar in 3 different rooms). She wanted "invisible", but really good in-wall speakers are expensive. I went cheap and based on some reviews on this site, bought some listenable 8" 3-way Audiosource in-walls. They are not my Axioms, but I was surprised at their sound for the price. Then came the sub. The Subsonic was the smallest sub I could find. I was sure it could never be any good, but my wife insisted there be no box, and definitely no "water heater" (my SVS) in her room. I read some magazine reviews and some on-line ones as well. Then I bought at an ebay retailer for about 1/2 the price of most places. The first thing I noticed was the size. It is a cube that is about 8-1/2" on all dimensions. The little 6-1/2" twin woofers do NOT look capable of decent bass. It is heavy for its size, but being so small, it was hard to imagine it packed with 2 opposing woofers and a 350 watt amp. I hooked it up and put some music to it. In the 12'X15' room, it created a very noticable bass floor that was not present with the in-walls alone. There is a definite "thump" that is remarkably clean. I am not claiming this to be a beast like my SVS, but it is a very good, very musical sub. It will never shake the windows out of my house, but it does a great job adding an octave or so of clean bass to the speakers it is mated with. This little sub sounds better than a 12" 200 watt Advent sub that I parted with a few years ago, and plays just as deep (about 35 hz). I am really pleased, and even a little amazed at the bass coming from this tiny cube. And my wife completely hid it UNDER a table in the corner! While I would like to be subjective on the sound...I use a BFD equalizer on all my subs, so my sound is always different than the original non-eqed sound. I will say that it was a great investment, and was one that, incredibly, even my wife is happy with!

Strengths:
Size and musicality. This little sealed sub is quite clean, especially when equalized.

Weaknesses:
well, for its size and price, you have to expect compromises. Really though, there are none. It does not play to the depths of a Hsu or my SVS, but that is a given considering its physical size and the size of its drivers.

Similar Products Used:
Advent, Klipsch, Cerwin Vega, and now, SVS subs. This little sub is as good as any of these except for the SVS.

Review 2 of 2

Price Paid:  $400.00 from Buy.com

Summary:
I bought this sub mainly to add a little more low end to my system. I have to say that I am thoroughly impressed. This thing is so tiny, but hits with authority in my medium sized room. The sub basically disappears and provides great low end for a great price. Overall a very musical sub which performs great with music or movies.

Strengths:
Size, Very Musical, Price, Build Quality

Weaknesses:
None so far
