Mackie HRS120
1 Reviews
rating  5 of 5
MSRP  1150.00
Description: The Mackie HRS120 Active Subwoofer is one of the most flexible, responsive, and cost-effective active studio sub woofers on the market today. It is perfectly suited for professional recording studios and film/video surround post-production facilities that require extremely accurate bass extension to 19Hz and below. The Mackie HRS120 is also an excellent choice for home theater surround sound installations. In addition to surround applications, the HRS120 can add more low-end presence and enhancement to project and professional studios in a standard stereo configuration.

Price Paid:  $1249.00 from zzounds.com

Summary:
Many have commented on how large the sub is but I don't think it is that large considering it has a darn flat frequency response down to 19Hz. The internal 400 watt amp allows the subwoofer to deliver incredible levels of bass energy cleanly and effortlessly.
I have been impressed at how easy it has been to integrate the sub with various brands of speakers.
I have been very satisfied with the performance of this sub. The only way I can see of improving upon it is to have two of them for finer control of smoothing nuls and standing waves. Maybe soon.

Strengths:
Very flexible connections and crossover settings. XLR and RCA inputs and outputs. There are available settings for crossover slope and the obvious variable crossover setting. There are also other settings which would allow you to use this sub in a professional recording setting, being that it is pm3 certified.

Weaknesses:
The unit is not packaged very well. My first unit arrived with the box dented and really beat up. The sub had a small dent and buzzed when the levels were turned up. Luckily, zzounds.com promptly arranged for a replacement. Although the second sub's box was also in bad shape, the sub itself was in tip-top shape.
A sub of this price/value should have included a continuously variable phase control instead of the 0-180 degree switch it has.
