Strength:

Price, plays reasonably loud, well built.

Weakness:

Doesen't go low enough

I purchased this sub a few years ago for my parent's 2 channel system to reinforce the low end because it had small speakers. At that it does a good job, provided you use the volume on the sub sparingly or else the sound becomes boomy. Its good for small to medium sized rooms. It does not extend very low for a sub but does help add some umph to any average system.

Crossover frequency

none at this time

Didn't expect tobe disappoint this Woofer, sense I presently
own the RE25 10" floor speaker and I wasn't. Being a Jazz
lister was seeking sound that I good enjoy at a moderate
level without loosing it's ability to produce adequate bass
in the percussion area.Very smooth listing thus far. The
crossover frequency while watching movies has satifactory
so far while watching movies such CliffHanger (Stallon),
Lost World (Goldblum) , Air Force One (Ford). By the way I
Also enjoy the re6 Center channel from Cerwin-Vega with trio
am enjoying lost of SMOOTH JAZZ and Theater sound MOVIES.
TRY IT U're LIKE IT!!!!!

Hummmmmmmm.

I listened to several subs and did a lot of reading. I originally was not looking at this one at all. The sales person convinced me to listen and compare it to the Pinnacle that I was testing. Wow! The clarity and definition from such a low cost speaker impressed me. I use this with Klipsch Quintet L/R and surrounds and an Infinty CC-2 center speaker to fill in the base. It does a wonderful job.

I have noticed that the sub hums during pure vocal scenes if it is turned up past 50% at a crossover above ~45Hz. I don't know if this is from my Onkyo TXDS676 receiver or from the sub itself. The hum sounds like it is near 60Hz.

This sub is LOUD. My wife hates it. :) I can only set the volume on the sub to about 20% of the max or it drowns out the other speakers. It works well with my Bose system. I have read lots of Bose reviews on this site that diss Bose stuff, but I like the Bose speakers, and they work well with the CV-sub. Since it is downward firing, it provides a nice fat sound for home theater so that the floor and your stomach shake when the tornado in Twister comes by, or the helicopter smashes into the building in The Matrix. I did not know what I was missing until I got this sub. It is also good for music and adds tons where the Bose stuff leaves off. Even though I like the Bose setup, the Bose setup does not provide that low base you need for Nelly or even the good ole Baby Got Back. Adding the CV-sub makes this music sound like one of those booming bass cars that drive by. It sounds like a club in my own home!

I have the crossover set very low so that the overall stereo sound is not muffled. I also recommend using the Monster subwoofer cable that has a built in Y-connector. This works great when your receiver or DVD player has a sub-out and your sub has a left and right line-in. The line-level outputs are also cool, but I have not used them yet.

Also, try moving the sub around the room to find the best spot. Although, this is hard to do if you buy a cable that is too short.

I heard the LW-12 at Besy Buy, but I like the HTS-12 better. The only difference is the line level outputs and which way the speaker fires (LW = front, HTS = down).

Strength:

House shaking bass; Perfect for home theater use

Weakness:

Size, extra time in intial tuning of sub

I purchased the Cerwin Vega HT-S12 about a year ago to enhance my home theather. It took me a couple of months to tune the sub to work to my satisfaction in my home theater area. One thing I can tell you about this sub is that it can really shake up your house. I was watching Godzilla on DVD and the scene where army was chasing Godzilla in the city really set off my sub. The wine glasses in my kitchen cabinets shook like an earthquake was happening!

One problem I have noticed with the sub is that if the sub volume is too high, it tends to distort a bit on high bassy scenes such as explosions in action movies. Sometimes I fine I have to turn down the sub below 50% to stop it from drowning out by front speakers.

Overall I am really happy with my sub. If you are looking for a sub that will make your room shake, this sub is for you!

Strength:

Very Loud and Aggressive Bass, Price

Weakness:

Build, might mistake it for a coffee table

I recently purchased this subwoofer from J&R.com for 299.00 and couldn't be happier with it. Being that im only 20 yrs old, I don't consider myself an audio expert yet. Anyhow, I use this subwoofer along with my Infinty speakers(RS-5's, RS-3's & CC-3 center)and it just amazes my friends and I. The Infinity speakers lack bass, but this subwoofer compinsates for that immensly. Once again, I am no expert but I know a good thing when I see it or hear in this case.

Strength:

Great tight, heavy bass

Weakness:

none

This sub does look like a coffee table, but that should be a strength because you dont' want to make it so obvious that you have a sub. I have since moved mine into the tv cabinet under the tv. Bass is louder and deeper from there rather than in the corner holding a lamp, a home theater and guns and ammo magazine.
This speaker sounded fuller and has more bass that out of the others I have had in the home. I chose this sub over the other and saved over $1,000 in the process!
Have the volume set at 6 and the crossover turned al the way down (45hz) and it will sound great!

mud constnatly tweeking on it

got mine at the mcrd nex in san diego. in the 600$ price range it is tops. the high snr ratio will rock the house. other people said they heard hum. i did not. if you have hum #1 check to see if you are useing a grounded cable. if you are then #2 make sure the thing is SORCE grounded. that hum usualy starts up stream. in some movies it will bottom out at high volumes. so i am constantly tweeking on it. over all i like it and would buy a second when and if i can get the extra coin.
