Bottom Line: Agree with other reviewers, nothing to touch these under £1000 certainly at new prices. Those who don't like the bass probably haven't heard real bass before with the more usual designs in this price bracket that cut off in real terms well before these beauties. Having that bass on hand probably to some ears makes mid-range appear less revelatory is all I can think.
The acid test : They simply cut the mustard on hard to reproduce full scale orchestral program. Provided you have the space, now an ebay bargain at around £150. Many speakers can make simple pop or jazz, programme sound pleaasnt. It's ALWAYS interesting that this is what's usually served at hifi shows or indeed on offer in hifis shops if you don't bring your own music along.
Can reproduce 32 foot organ pipe fundamentals, now just WHAT new speaker can do that below £1000?
Sorry, (and I know this can be personal ) but you can keep your similarly priced KEFs, B&Ws, Monitor Audios.
Would I upgrade? Yes, to a TDL Studio series 2nd hand buy or Meridian if I won the lottery :)

Bottom Line: I have the early version of the RTL 3 (identified by full length grill covers and 4 straight sides on the base cones). I find them great for most types of music, with good bass extension and weight, even at lowish volume levels. The midrage is fine but the upper treble can be a little bit harsh on some music when theres a lot going on.
To those with "blown tweeters" i ask - are you sure its the tweeters? Mine appeared to be blown when I bought them but it was the crossovers that had burned out- check for warping between the binding posts.
I bought replacement crossovers from Lockwood audio in the UK (who bought all the spares when TDL went bust). They were the later spec xovers and made a big difference to the clarity and focus in the upper mid and treble, making the speaker overall excellent. Well worth the £100-£150 you can buy them for on E-bay.
I would say a good amp with plenty of current delivery is needed to keep the base tight. With cheap amps it can sound a little boomy but no more than any other speaker that delivers bass

Strengths: Natural sounding speaker, exceptional bass not to overbearing, but their when you need it.Weaknesses: Too bad the company is out of business.Bottom Line: come to think about it, I've owned these speakers for about 5 years now, and I've upgraded gears, but not these speakers. I'm actually running them with Rotel RTC 965, surround processor, and the rotel RB985 MK2, which is a multi channel amp, and recently upgraded to Audioquest Forest, speaker cables. I fell in love all over again with them, and could not believe, that after 5 yrs, they would still impress me. Greater deph, presence, imaging, was detected. It's no mistery that those speakers produce a generous amount of bass, but since the upgrade, the bass seems to be more focus, cleaner, and also a lot more extented. For the past year or so, I've auditioned a lot of speakers, and of course I did hear a lot of good or maybe better speakers, for a lot more money, but going back home and listening to the RTL3, they always seem to bring me a sense of comfort and a smile to my face. In other words they sound damn G O O D!!!!!!
