Strength:

Very well constructed, heavy as hell. Made in Canada by hosers, eh!

Weakness:

None so far.

Sweet, sweet candy...Pick 'em up cheap, bi-wire & sit back & groove! Serious bottom-end, sweet midrange and singing tweets. You cannot go wrong with these babies.

Strength:

Each time I have upgraded a component in the system, the speakers have upgraded their own sound to match the improvement. They sounded great with a powerful Panasonic HT unit BUT they were an entirely new speaker with a top of the line Kenwood driver. And when I added a NAD C521BEE CD player, again, they raised their performance level to match. I don't think I've reached their maximum potential... but what more can a 56 year old man hear? Not much.

Weakness:

To upgrade or not to upgrade, that is always a burning question. Get a few extra bucks in your pocket, and you get the fever BUT I have to slap myself each time this happens... Are you happy with your current speakers? Yes. Are they meeting your needs? Yes. Do you really love listening to them? Yes. So now, I score browny points and give the extra coin to my WIFE so that she can buy another horse!

I love these speakers. To my ears, they are clear, solid and fun to listen to for many hours. I have them working with a HSU subwoofer, and together, they can really rock the house on DVDs or CDs. I liked their sound so much that I purchased a PSB 8C to go with them in HT. Oh sure, I could get a taller speaker, a wider speaker, a more expensive speaker, but why? Other than my ego, there is no reason to replace these wonderful sounding PSB speakers.

Customer Service

Excellent. I chatted with them when I wanted to purchase a center channel. They correctly suggested that the 8C would match well, and it did.

Strength:

Everything, including the construction. Speakers are for LISTENING, not LOOKING. If you want speakers that LOOK nice, get B&W's and turn up the TV.

Weakness:

Connectors are plastic, but whatever...that's 50-100 bucks in your pocket for CD's.

Short and Sweet: I've bought 3 pairs of speakers since the psb 800i (B&W's just last month for 1,500) and have returned every pair. Nothing comes close to the 800i for pure, simple music listening at any volume level. I have dropped them, my dog has pushed in the woofer cones with his nose, and I've used various low-mid grade amps. I recently hooked up a SimAudio Moon I-5 integrated amp to it and...well...they are even better. Unreal. I was shopping for $2,000 speakers to "match" my new amp. I'm not shopping anymore. If you want better sound from them, get a better amp. And enjoy the fact that you have sound that rivals speakers 2 and possibly 3 times the price. These are good, solid, precise sounding speakers. Any music sounds good, especially female vocals and loungey, percussion-based tracks. These babies rock. Thanks Canada!

Strength:

Great sound and quality.

Superb. Crisp. Clear. These speakers by far are one of the best speakers within its class. It offers tight bass, clear and crips sound. For a speaker within the $500-$750...PSB 800i will do you good.

Strength:

Price & Sound Quality...with quite a bit of bass.

I looked for quite a while for speakers that would be fairly inexpensive with a great sound, to replace my mixed bag of Dolby ProLogic equipment, when I started the slow and expensive upgrade to Dolby Digital. For value and sound I was going to get the Century 600i's, but one day while cruising the web I found the 800i's for $350, with $14 shipping. Well it was a deal too good to pass up. I got them, with the 200Ci center channel speaker, for $514 delivered. They’re big, but they sound very good. I'm glad that I waited until the closeout of the now discontinued Century line, otherwise I would not have gotten them. The entire PSB line is so good, but the 800i's sound great with quite a bit of bass. If one wasn't too particular about heavy bass during movies, one could get along with these without a sub woofer. Great speakers even at list prices. Try to get some before they're all gone.

Strength:

very good bass, crisp clean highs, natural midrange, imaging and soundstage

Weakness:

none at this price or even 2 times as much

This is a follow up to my previous review. I have since upgraded to a Harman-Kardon Signature 2.0 DD/DTS processor/tuner/preamp and its matching Signature 2.1 amp (100w x 5). These units used to sell for about $3500 and I got them as a demo for $860 shipped. (You can get them for $999 at www.harmanaudio.com) I am surprised at the sound difference over my Denon DD-ready AVR-2600 with Technics SH-AC500D DD/DTS processor. There is more detail (can hear the echos of the guitar chamber, breathing, vibration of the strings, etc.), soundstage (width and depth), imaging is locked in more, realism to the acoustic instruments, ambience, etc. I was interested how it would make these speakers sound with electronics costing much more and they were up to the task. This says alot for these speakers as you wold almost never put electronics that cost 4x or more (MSRP) than the speakers. Very satisfied and enjoying listening to my CD's all over again!

I am kind of just starting out in the true enjoyment of good sound. I purchased a set of the 800i's at $500 U.S. and have been very pleased with
the sound. I started looking heavily at the Bose lifestyle 1200 system
until I ran accross this page and was turned on to other makes like
Paradigm, PSB and the like. I have the 800i's as main front speakers the
200ci center channel. I will purchase the Subsonic 3 and a couple of
alphas for the surround once I find the right price. Over all I would give
the 800i's...

This is getting a little out of hand. I came up with a scheme to be able to explain needing a pair of PSB 800's--I decided to donate an old pair of Harman Kardon HK-40's and a Kenwood KR-920 receiver that I was using in my shop to a real good friend of mine who has been my musical guru for over 30 years, and is currently music-less. And simultaneously, I've been assembling an older low-power tube system consisting of a Dyna SCA-35 and an FM-3 that I've been refurbishing. So I needed a pair of 8-ohm speakers with a sensitivity of at least 90 dB that I could afford and live with. I already have and love two other PSB systems--Century 400i's with Alpha One subs and Stratus Goldi's, both from Steve at Country Video (610-828-2600). I tell you, this guy has cast some kind of spell over me. Every time I went in there I would listen to the 800's, and I tell you, they just grow on you. I kept telling myself for this latest project--Alpha A/V's, Alpha A/V's, Alpha A/V's. But when it came to turkey-talking time, I finally heard the Alphas for what they are--full yet crisp, but a bit bloomy in the mid-bass, mostly from positioning due to the rear port, and I needed a more position-independent design with a higher impedance. The SCA-35 only has 8 and 16 ohm taps--does anyone else out there know that? I didn't.
Checking the PSB specs, it came down to the 600's and the 800's--both 8-ohms, average and stated minimum, and both 90-91 dB sensitivity. Naturally, Steve didn't have any 600's in stock, so I went with the feeling. Hey, money is like potato chips, I figure--you make more. But now I'm running out of rooms for all these little system projects.

The PSB line as a whole continues to impress me with its value for dollar. At every price point they seem to have a winning design with a performance profile that suits my own personal taste in audio. Their speakers are easy to imagine matched to your equipment--they leave a clear image of their sonic signature in your head that you can manipulate later when you're planning your fiscal attack.
And their stuff seems amazingly program-, equipment-, and placement-independent. At least much more so than many other more "finicky" designs. Good is just good, I guess. Rather less like a finely tuned Ferrari than a well-run-in Corvette. You can spend more, but you might not have more fun.

Five stars again for a job well done.

I purchased a pair of 800's in 1995 and a pair of PSB 500's for my rear surround. I have not yet been able to stress these speakers! I love my
music and movies at rock concert levels and I can not believe the sounds
that come from these relatively low priced speakers. I just recently
purchased a 100ci center channel and would recommend the 200 to match the
800's.

I could not agree with you more, these speakers are some of the best i've
heard for the money. I auditioned several makes and models of speakers
only to come back to the PSB 800i's again and again. Great sounding
speakers!!
