Clean, clear and very proficient. Bottom heavy ( lots of bass) and sounds wonderful at a low volume.

The boxes sometimes rattles at a moderate volume the boxes should be made from heavier material.

S10

I purchased the S10's about six months ago for $80 from craigslist just because the match my furniture and planning on the near future get what I really want it. Well, let me tell you that I had found exactly what I was looking for. The sound, the look and all the complements that I get from friends about the speakers its incredible, even my fiance that doesn't know anything about audio equipment love them.
I currently got them hook up on a Harman Kardon AVR 25 II (old school to the fullest) and its a perfect match. I do recommend using a sub for hip hop, etc to keep the load of the bass off of the S10's. I'm so crazy about this speakers, that I'm searching for the all the "S" series out there (S4, S6, S8). Bottom line, Priceless...

Ever since I was old enough to know better, I've loved Polk speakers (still have my 2 originals from 1988, still work/sound great). I purchased the S10's in 1995 for $300 apiece, and have driven them with a couple of different HK receivers over the years, and they have never failed me. The clarity of sound, and ability to get loud when I need it is still great. My wife would like me to replace them with something more compact, as they are the "old school" large speaker. But I can't find anything for the money that I like as much. I've had Cerwins of similar size that would get louder, and Klipsch's seem to deliver better low end at high volume, but these are the best all around I've owned. Not giving them up anytime soon.

the low end is kinda flat in a 2 piece configuration. solution: go buy a 300$ sub and you will love each and every second of use

These speakers originally where my great uncles. when he passed away they were given to my father. Sadly enough he also passed away 3 years ago. they have always been an exceptional set of speakers as long as i can remember.
I have the hooked up w/100 watts rms to each speaker, and to take the low end stress off them i also have my cerwin vega ls12. great combo. when i see that no-one in my building is home i get a chance to push them, to avoid a noise violation. they are louder and clearer than most of the professional pa systems that ive seen at local venues. i dont know if i could live with out them!!!!

THE CLARITY IS FOUND IN YOUR HIGH END SPEAKERS WHICH COSTS ALOT MORE,

THE BASS CAN GET A LITTLE FLAT.

THESE SPEAKERS HAVE A WELL BALANCED SOUND AND IS WORTH MORE THAN WHAT THEY ASKED FOR THEM.

Bass gets a bit flat when cranked, die off at low volume

Got these new on an end-of-year sale, well-below the $600 sticker price. Honestly, they would have been a great buy at that price. At $400, they were a steal and I remember that they matched up favorably against some higher end Infinity and M&K speakers. The Dynamic Balance tweeters are strong (try them with Maxwell's "Don't Ever Wonder"), but placement is critical as they are very directional. The sound is full and warm. However, they really could use a sub to free them of the low-end burden. A little hiss can be noticed, but good cables can take care of most of that. They are a power hog, though, as they prefer to be played a bit louder than the neighbors might like. Oh well.
They really shined when I coupled them with a pair of Polk S-8's on a 4 channel SAE amp. Oooooh. They hold up well for both higher (Saturday night parties) and softer volume (Sunday evening jazz) demands.
If you can still find these puppies, they are worth money. I've never felt a need to upgrade...

Excellent imaging and detail. Voices,in particular, are impressive. More precise bass than the design would suggest.

I've been using these speakers in a smallish room for over ten years, and although I've occasionally tried to "upgrade", I've never found speakers that deliver the combination of warmth and precision that these Polks do. I should note that although they are designed as floorstanders, they'll sound much better on small stands(say, 12"). I'm currently using a NAD C370 amp with a Cambridge D300se CD player and Bettercable speaker wire and interconnects. Difficult to find now, but worth the hunt.

I would rate these speakers very good - about a four. Good bass handling and crisp detail. Imaging is fair as there is a narrow sweet spot. I found putting these speakers on small stands which allowed the tweeter to be closer to ear level opened up the sound considerably. These speakers are no longer available at store - probably need to purchase them used.

Interesting....owned them for about 2 years. I am an avid nut when it comes to music. You name, I listen to it. Smooth, nice highs. Lacking in depth. You really need a sub with them. Most music sounded nice from these $600 large bookshelves. response was above average.
But...no, they couldn't handle rap or loud heavy metal. You can hear the muffle. Lack of extenstion on the throw side of things.

Great at low to mid levels, nice starter speakers. enjoy em for a while, and move up the chain to something better. In this audio world--3 speakers
