Strength:

The total number of unemployed people in Latvia is 160,185. In Latvia, 22.5% of the population lives below the poverty line. The percentage of citizens living below the poverty line in Latvia is fairly high, but is not reason for complete concern with regard to investments. http://www.confiduss.com/en/jurisdictions/latvia/economy/

Weakness:

Potential financial backers should look at other economic markers, including GDP, urbanization rate, and strength of currency, before making any decisions regarding investments.

If you are reading this and considering buying a pair of these speakers don't hesitate, buy them! I have been trying to find the perfect sound for over 30 years trying endless combinations of amplifiers and speakers. I think it has been a case of one step forward and then two steps back. I love this hobby but it can be so frustrating. I have had a lot of quite esotic amplifiers and speakers but nothing approaches the John Boers Active set up. There is such a clarity, punch and neutrality to the sound, its hard to believe that these speakers are over 25 years old. I have owned active ATC speakers but these blow them away no problem. I bought them on eBay recently for £350 which is the biggest bargain ever! They are very heavy, 30kg each so be warned but they are attractive and blend in really well. I listen to all types of music and can't fault them on any music type. They sound great on an old CD player and truly sensational on my Kuzma Stabi/Stogi turntable. They are very powerful in the bass but very accurate and tuneful at the same time. The top end is so detailed and almost a rival for Quad electrostatics. I have owned the Quad 57s and Shackman electrostatics so I know what I am speaking about. These speakers must have been so far ahead of anything on the market in 1985. One of the surprising features so far is the clarity at very low levels. This is always the sign of an exceptional speaker. The dynamics are there even when listening at low volumes. Bill Brufords drum kit has never sounded so good. I could go on and on but I will leave it there and just say that they are the best speaker I have ever owned and probably ever will. The amazing thing is that I have sold my shackman speakers, Quad 44/405 amplifier and these paid for the John Bowers speakers. I still can't believe how good they are and how lucky I am to own these wonderful speakers. My wife loves the sound too! Don't hesitate, buy them, you won't be dissapointed!

Strength:

Music is what you hear, not loudspeakers. Balanced sound, from rock to classic. Very well build and good access to the electronics.

Weakness:

Almost none: I now have them playing on the unbalanced inputs because when using the balanced input one of the speakers produces a little low hum.

Reading the previous reviews, I can only emphasize the sound quality of these speakers. And now it's already 2005! I bought a pair of these beauties second hand for only € 350,- (approx. $ 400,-). OK, they are 25 years old, but I immediately replaced my NAD 218 THX with JBL HP-520's for the Active one's. If you are able to get a pair, don't hesitate to buy them.

Similar Products Used:

Non. For me there's no comparison between active speakers of this class and passive speakers.

Strength:

Nothing comes even close to the sound quality.

Weakness:

An ac plug for plugging the in for active crossover.

Since I bought theses speakers back in the day I have tried hard to keep them in mint condition but having them thi long hahah fat chance. They still sound as they did when I got them thought perfect. I have heard alot of speakers ie: Tannoy's B&W's Cervin Vega's Sound Dynamics nothing comparies just the design of the amp being in them reproduces sound like you are there drum solo's to chello's the range of perfect sound. All I can say is WOW!!!!!

Well folks, all you have to do is look at where the pro markit(studio recording) is going and you will see that active is the new buzz word. All the new top near field monitor choices are active. The John Bowers were ahead of the times for sure. How do they sound? Depends on what pair you listen to. If they were one of the ones made by John Bower himself, then I don't think you can find a much better system. Different yes, better no. The advantage that an active system has over a non-active system is like comparing a V8 engine to an inline 6 cyl engine. The advantage is with the active system. Don't judge active speakers by Meridian's speakers. These are not a set of John Bowers Active Ones at all. They sound compleatly different, and the only thing they share is that they are both active. Don says it well. One thing that I should mention is the bass. Although it might seem that going by the specs that it could go lower, remember that for a pair of speakers to image well they must be set up even, but for a pair of stereo subs to sound good they must be set up odd. So there is a trade off. The bass on the John Bowers Active Ones is very powerfull and the tonal quality is soooooo good! Like I said, they just get different from here, not better IMHO.
John^^

These speakers show the future of all high end audio systems. I have never likedthe idea of active speakers....but after hearing a pair of active ones all I can say is we are all being taken for a ride by the audio industry. After hearing
these I can say that there is no way to build a audio system using mixed amps,
speakers, crossovers, wires, preamps, etc and expect to end up with anything that
comes close to a well designed active system. How many people do you know who
have over $10,000 in there system and are really happy with it? I have been building my system for over 5 years, a mixture of Krell, Wilson Audio, Roland,
Sonic Frountiers, Audio Alchamy,etc...only the finest parts....almost $50,000.00 invested and after hearing the Bowers I realize that every time I fix one problem with my system, I create a new one somewhere else. I now believe it is
imposable to build a conventional system where the amps are seperate from the
speaker and come up with a really "true" sounding system.
These are the best speakers/amps ever made.....at any price. If they still made them I would gladly sell my system for half of what I paid for it and buy
a pair of Active Ones. Like they say...they just don't make them like they used too.
